NIMBY Rails News

Devblog for August 2020

With the code rot of year long prototype code impeding new designs, it was a month of rewrites and redesigns. The month started slow, going back to the drawing board multiple times, but it ended with new and much better systems for train and line scheduling. And experimentation with building generation continued.

Devblog for July 2020

Most of July was still dominated by bringing up multiplayer for all the existing game functionality, this time focused on the train simulation. But now the bulk of the work is finally done, and the framework is in place to network any future features too. The jams seen in the demo also received a mitigation feature that foresees the future work on signals. And it looks like procedural building simulation as moved from "research project" to "actually may happen and be tied to a feature, not just for show".

Devblog June 2020

The technical and not so technical devblog for June 2020 is now available at Carlos' blog:

The game map now has an order of magnitude more text, and station track links are now better integrated with their siblings, including being able to customize the curve radius. But the big item for June was bringing up multiplayer support for the user-edited part of the game model, and it's finally working. Check the video in the blog post!

Play NIMBY Rails @ Steam Game Festival!

The Steam Game Festival is finally here and you can now download and play the NIMBY Rails alpha demo for the duration of the festival. This demo has most of the low level core systems in place but it's still lacking some major gameplay systems, or features placeholders for some others. Additionally it's also using a cut down map, to reduce the download size. But we believe it's enough to get an idea of how the game is shaping up and how it's going to play once it's finished.

We haven't included a tutorial or help system in game, apart from the editor control hints. See this forum post for some first steps:

Devblog May 2020: demo for Steam Game Festival
An alpha demo of NIMBY Rails will be available to play during the Steam Game Festival, 2020 Summer Edition!
The big development effort for this month was to do a big polish phase and bring up some game systems to prepare a demo build for the upcoming Steam Game Festival in June. This demo will be limited in some ways, in time, content and features, and represents an alpha state for the game. But it is a big opportunity to get feedback from potential players of the game before we go Early Access later in the year. See more details in the devblog for May 2020 at Carlos' blog:
