v1.66 Patch Notes - Christmas 2020

Hi folks,

DemonCrawl's Christmas Event is finally here, and with it comes a major game update!

Today, we are releasing 2 new masteries (Warlock and Human), 25 new items, a morality system, new Hero Trial mechanics and more™. Read on for the full patch notes!

[h2]Christmas Event[/h2]
  • Complete the holiday questline to earn 4 new avatars and a new inventory skin
  • 21 additional holiday avatars are available in prizeboxes
  • Item Shops sell Giftwrap for 20 coins
  • Earn tokens by donating Presents to strangers
  • It's so cold that some strangers got trapped in ice
  • Added mysterious Soft Snow item...
  • Added Christmas Special Chest

[h2]New Features[/h2]

  • New mastery: Human - "Use your morality to call upon the forces of good or evil."
  • New mastery: Warlock - "Sacrifice life to create Cursed cells and harness the power of magic." (Heavily inspired by ideas from community members Emberflame and Egg)
  • Added Morality mechanic: many common actions will either increase or decrease your morality
  • 3 new legendary items
  • 4 new magic items
  • 5 new passive items
  • 10 new consumable items
  • 3 new omens
  • New special chest: Radioactive Chest - "This cell gains Toxic. Spread Toxic when Poison activates. Reveal Toxic cells and kill any living objects within when you open this chest. This chest contains Poison."
  • New stage mod: Righteous - "Lose 5 morality when you enter the stage. If your morality is negative at the end of the stage, lose all legendary items and gain an omen. If positive, lose all omens and gain a legendary."
  • Added "Use Classic Flag Icon" to Gameplay Settings
  • Added "Don't Scare Me" to Gameplay Settings (removes blood and spooky cutscenes)
  • Desktop only: added keybind for toggling in-game audio (default "M")
  • Hold Shift while pressing the audio toggle key to only affect the music track
  • New award: Heartless - Gain points for leaving hearts behind while injured
  • New daily mission: HEART STOPPER - "Earn 100 points from Heartless awards."
  • Added new sigils related to morality
  • Hero Trials now have a 1-in-3 chance to feature an alternate scoring system
  • Greatly expanded the Hero Trial effect pool


[h2]Quality of Life[/h2]

  • Holiday items are now given a hidden tag, allowing you to search for them in the Codex by holiday name
  • Added simple animation for changes to properties like morality
  • The window scale setting will now update in real time to prevent players from accidentally setting it too high
  • The help menu scrollbar now advances by only 1 row per tick
  • Minor tweaks to Pufferfish sprite
  • Added tooltip for Masteries and Special Chests to indicate how many you have unlocked
  • Updated Sigil icon in the loadout editor
  • Updated True Ending dialogue
  • Darkened background during credits sequence of the True Ending for legibility


[h2]Balance Changes[/h2]

  • Library can no longer generate items that cost less than 1
  • Mystic Statue rewards are now provided at level completion rather than when you exit the completed level
  • You can no longer apply an aura to a cell that already has the same aura
  • Cursed aura now deflects all forms of life loss instead of just damage
  • Shadow Siphon effect modified: "Gain souls equal to the value of target visible occupied cell, then destroy its contents without triggering kill effects."
  • Shadow Siphon price increased from 50 to 80 coins
  • Stocking rework: "[150 Mana] If your morality is positive, gain a Present. Otherwise, gain Coal."
  • Wrecking Ball no longer reports as a completed effect if it could not find an object to destroy


[h2]Bug Fixes[/h2]

  • Fixed an issue with the item loss trigger when activated via item transformation
  • Fixed a crash related to updating keybinds
  • Fixed a rare crash related to the "conceal stats" variable
  • Fixed a potential memory leak related to Quest for Piety
  • Fixed an issue with Breadcrumbs solving more cells than intended
  • Minor performance improvement for items that drop at random (e.g. Minions from Binoculars)
  • Seismic mod no longer attempts to move immutable objects
  • Fixed an issue with blowing up frozen visible monsters
  • Fixed invalid target text for Bomb
  • Fixed typo in Protagonist unlock strings
  • Fixed persistent magic sparkles when restarting a quest
  • Fixed an issue with Hero Trial inbox rewards
  • Cursed aura no longer attempts to destroy immutable objects
  • Standardized "USE_MAGIC" trigger to fix a few inconsistent edge cases
  • Standardized "CLICK_MONSTER" and "CLICK_BOSS" triggers
  • Wand of Retribution no longer gives souls for monsters that survive its effect


Hotfix #1 @ 3:30 PM EST - Fixed an issue that prevented Human mastery from unlocking.

Hi folks,

DemonCrawl's biggest seasonal event of the year is finally upon us! For the next two weeks, you can unlock a TON of brand new holiday content by completing unique missions!

If you missed last year's Christmas event, now's your chance to right that wrong - we have added Christmas 2019 rewards to your Prizeboxes! You can also pick up the Candy Cane inventory from the Token Shop for a limited time. Please see last year's post for more details.

The beta for DemonCrawl's big Christmas event has officially begun! It features a ton of festive new content, including a holiday questline, a time-limited boss, over a dozen new items and ~more~!

v1.65 Patch Notes

Hi folks,

We just deployed a DemonCrawl update that includes 10 new items, a flexible item tag system, a new special chest, and more! Check out the full patch notes below for more details.

We now plan to shift gears and begin working on one last special event for 2020 - we want it to be as big (or bigger) than our recent Halloween event, so we definitely have our work cut out for us! Also, we expect to release one more port this year. More news on that front soon.

  • Added Nomad that sells weapons
  • New passive item: Sage - "Stages grant an additional mastery charge."
  • New passive item: Wisdom Tooth - "Gain a mastery charge whenever you consume an item that isn't a consumable item. Automatically consume this item when you enter the final stage."
  • New passive item: Crucifix - "Whenever damage reduces your life to 1, gain a revive."
  • New passive item: Battering Ram - "At the start of each stage, reveal all cells near visible cells and kill any monsters within." (Inspired by an idea from raisins77)
  • New passive item: Whetstone - "Favor all weapon items. Whenever you gain a weapon, you can powerchord any cell for 5 turns."
  • New magic item: Essence of Motion - "Gain pathfinding equal to one-tenth the sum of target visible 3x3 area, rounded down."
  • New magic item: Makeshift Weapon - "[200 Mana] Reveal and kill any monsters in target area, then lose a random weapon. The radius of this item is equal to your number of weapons."
  • New magic item: Pufferfish - "[200 Mana] Automatically discharges when damage reduces your life to 1. Kill 20 random monsters."
  • New magic item: Dumpster - "[100 Mana] Lose all items with a position in your inventory greater than sum of target 3x3 visible area." (Inspired by an idea from elmarhoppieland)
  • New consumable item: Breadcrumbs - "Gain 3% pathfinding. Solve all visible cells with a value equal to one-tenth of your pathfinding or less."
  • New special chest: Munition Chest - "Reveal a random monster then kill all visible monsters when you open this chest. It contains a weapon item."
  • New boss mod: Killer - "Take 5 damage at the end of the stage."
  • New Hero Trial effect: "[...] equal to your pathfinding"


[h2]Quality of Life[/h2]

  • The Beyond recipe scrollbar will maintain its position between ingredient selections
  • Rare loot modifiers are now listed on the avatar tooltip
  • Mystic Statue depth is now listed on the stage icon tooltip
  • Updated the particle effect on Wilds
  • Added term definition for "favor"
  • Added new color palettes for a few stage mods


[h2]Balance Changes[/h2]

  • Firefly I buff: the extra burning cells produced by stage mods will always be numbered
  • Firefly II nerf: "Whenever you fully and correctly chord a burning cell, shoot a flare in a random direction."
  • Firefly III buff: reduced the charge cost from 4 to 3
  • Flying Carpet nerf: price increased from 37 to 44 coins
  • Battery nerf: price increased from 11 to 16 coins
  • Electro Pulse nerf: price increased from 12 to 14 coins
  • Doctor buff: reduced upfront fee
  • Chorder's Password now caps at value 5 instead of 6
  • Chaos Font can now contain legendary items
  • Chaos Font can no longer contain items that cost less than 1

  • Fixed a visual issue with the Minion activation animation
  • Fixed a crash related to activating multiple Dreamcatchers
  • Fixed a crash related to Muscle and Divine Whip
  • Fixed a crash related to selecting the Oct 8th stage as part of a composite Classic skin
  • Fixed Blacksmith progress not saving to disk properly
  • Fixed a couple missing Detective toasts
  • Fixed a crash related to Trash Bin trashing itself
