v1.56 Patch Notes

We released a stability patch for DemonCrawl this morning - full patch notes are below!

  • Added Foreground Particles setting for a bit more control over the game's appearance

  • Improved the appearance of the scrollbars in the Classic Mode and Patch Notes windows


[h2]Bug Fixes[/h2]

  • Fixed a number of issues with achievements not unlocking properly
  • Fixed a lockup related to the Trusty mod
  • Fixed a minor visual alignment issue with scrollbars in popups
  • The following items now observe standard event triggers: Frostbite, Wand of Retribution
  • Fixed an issue with music in Classic Mode reverting to the Classic theme on restart, regardless of selected skin
  • Blowing up hidden monsters should now correctly activate all monster death-related effects
  • Fixed value calculation issue with Swelling Rune
  • Fixed double toast with Handaxe
  • Fixed Rising stage mod toast showing incorrect sprite
  • Fixed a crash related to typing into the volume setting fields directly
  • Fixed a visual glitch with the Sainted Glint that prevented its new mod from showing up on stage select
  • Fixed buggy interaction between autodischarge magic items and Mud
  • Electric cells now affect Wishpools
  • Communist mod can no longer proc after death
  • Optimized the hitbox for cell objects
  • Android only: speculative fix for rare crash related to loading the game on a new device


Hotfix #1 @ 2:20 PM EST - Fix for crash related to Superego, speculative fix for monster count desync (likely related to the update that changed how killing hidden monsters works), fixed botched Linux build.

v1.55 Patch Notes - Classic Mode 2.0

Hi folks,

We just released a big update for DemonCrawl that adds selectable skins to Classic Mode! You can unlock Classic Skins by earning high scores in each stage of a regular quest.

If you manage to get every Classic Skin, you will be rewarded with the new Infinite Journey achievement. This patch introduces 20 achievements altogether!

  • Redesigned Classic Mode interface
  • Unlock skins for Classic Mode by earning a certain amount of points in each stage
  • Hybrid skins are supported by Classic Mode as well
  • Randomize your Classic Mode settings by clicking on the "Custom" difficulty button
  • New stage mod: Vigilant - "Before opening or chording a cell, nearby visible monsters will attack you."
  • New stage mod: Forsaken - "Legendary items do not work. Omens activate an additional time."
  • New stage mod: Surrounded - "At the start of the stage, monsters spawn along the perimeter." (Suggested by community member Cubear!)
  • Added new color palettes for 10 existing stage mods

  • Updated the description of Helm for clarity
  • If you lose on a Dark stage, board visibility will be restored for ease of review

  • Fixed string issues related to Greedy Pig, Treasure Pouch, Medusa Head, Dumbbell, Ritual Chalk
  • The following items now observe standard event triggers: Brainsap, Hot Sauce, Taxes, Monocle, Claw, Chromatic Choker, Appetizer, Anvil
  • Fixed a crash related to hovering a Snowball artifact
  • Fixed another crash related to the Dark Chest that adds monsters to a stage
  • Fixed Doomcall not activating harbingers a second time as described
  • Fixed a visual glitch that would cause bosses to desync from their cell during movement
  • Similar to above, fixed an issue related to Groupie and stranger movement
  • Fixed title casing in Glint tooltips
  • Fixed Gluttony not interacting with Mystery Meat
  • Fixed a crash related to Prism of Intellect not distinguishing between normal and divine item radius (e.g. Divine Watering Can)
  • The Predatory stage mod will no longer create a toast notification if there are no monsters on the board
  • Applying Burning directly to a hidden cell no longer activates monster reveal effects
  • Nightmare toast will no longer show up when right-clicking objects on the board
  • The inventory button will no longer animate if your inventory is full whenever item acquisition is attempted
  • Fixed a Linux-only crash related to Quest V by replacing spaces in stage skin folders with underscores
  • Speculative fix for visual glitch that causes an empty cell to appear full (please let us know if you continue running into this issue)

Celebrating our Linux launch with a 25% discount!

Hi folks,

We are very excited to announce that DemonCrawl has officially made its way onto the Linux operating system!

We have decided to celebrate by running a 25% discount on DemonCrawl for the entire week, starting right now!

If you're on Ubuntu version 16 or later, you can launch DemonCrawl from the Steam client and everything should "just work." That said, some players have informed us that the game also works great in other distros with a bit of elbow grease.

(Note - Ubuntu is the only flavor of Linux we officially support at this time, but you can always reach out to us at [email protected] for help getting the game to work in a different environment.)

[h2]Other news[/h2]

Not a Linux player? Don't worry - we are working hard to bring DemonCrawl to all major platforms. We can confirm at this time that the Mac and iOS ports are up next. :-)

We are also in the process of externalizing all game strings for ease of translation. DemonCrawl has somewhere around 8000 unique lines of text, all of which need to be moved to external JSON files so our translation team can do their thing. About half of the work has been completed - item names, descriptions, stage mods, and much more are already loading through external JSON. We hope to have the rest of it done in the next month or so.

Finally, we're cooking up a pretty large content update that should be ready by the end of the week (slated to enter Beta by Thursday or so)... we may post some spoilers about it in the Discord over the next couple days. ;-)

We just released a new stability patch for DemonCrawl! :-)

This update includes several buffs and reworks to early game items, which should help players get their builds off the ground a bit more consistently.

A larger update is also scheduled for release next week - that one will land in our beta branch first, so make sure to support us on Patreon if you want to get your hands on it as soon as possible.

Hotfix #1 @ 6:40 PM EST - Possibly fixed an issue that caused the "stage complete" button to appear prematurely. Working to determine if this has been fully resolved.

Oh no, I think DemonCrawl might just end up being my next 100 hour game and it's now available for Linux PC.
