New Masteries! v1.50 Patch Notes

Hi folks,

We just released an update for DemonCrawl that introduces two exciting new masteries:





Additionally, we have overhauled the Spellbinder boss, reworked Obelisks, fixed a ton of bugs and more. Full patch are below!

[h2]New Features[/h2]

  • New mastery: Novice - Offers powerful learning tools at the expense of score
  • New mastery: Demolitionist - Bring on the Barrels
  • New memento: Demolitionist's Memento - "Whenever you blow up an object in the Metagate, spawn a Guide."
  • You can now manually detonate barrels at the cost of 1 damage
  • The autosolver can now utilize monster count to determine if progress can be made


[h2]Quality of Life[/h2]

  • Added a sign to the tutorial that explains chording
  • Items with a cost of 0 are now included in the Codex
  • Improved targeting descriptions of the following magic items: Trash Bin, Handbell, Watering Can, Surgical Saw, Drill, Pendulum, Magic Dark Ink, Mortal Root, Loudhailer, Troll Cross, Ritual Chalk, Lotus, Mjolnir, and Powder Keg
  • Added simple animation to inventory button when you gain a new item
  • You can now paste text into input fields


[h2]Balance Changes[/h2]

  • Obelisks have been reworked:
    • You must now choose to activate the obelisk
    • All obelisks require you to open x cells within 10 seconds
    • The random penalty for failure is listed upfront
    • You will gain a Tablet on success
    • Tablet of Pyxe buff: "Gain 100 XP at the end of each stage, and 1000 XP at the end of the quest."
    • Tablet of Ne'kot buff: "Gain a Token at the end of each stage, and 50 Tokens at the end of the quest."
    • Tablet of Drocer has been replaced with Tablet of Lairetam: "Gain a random artifact at the end of each stage, and 10 random artifacts at the end of the quest."
    • Obelisk sprite updated
  • Spellbinder boss overhaul
    • Take 2 damage whenever a Dark Heart is collected.
    • Whenever you make a mistake, manalock your magic items for 30 turns.
    • Whenever you use a magic item, destroy a random Dark Heart.
  • Snowflake I and Commander I now operate on left-clicking flagged cells
  • Defense can now fall below 0 (makes monsters stronger)
  • Reduced the coin cost of Starpond items by one third
  • Reduced the base durability of Chainmail from 3 to 1
  • The Library can no longer give omens
  • Reduced the price of Godmonger from 28 to 23 coins

  • Fixed lag when gaining a massive amount of XP at once
  • Fixed crash related to "Airtight" Sigil
  • Fixed Sentry Gnome failing to activate under some conditions
  • Fixed Tablet items that were dropped from Obelisks not writing to disk properly
  • Fixed a typo in the "Death" Hero Trial description
  • Fixed a rare issue related to visible monsters that would make the autosolver incorrectly believe you did not have to guess
  • Fixed several instances of lingering tooltips
  • Fixed Key of Undoing not updating the "stage completed" label after use
  • Fixed explosion effects bypassing the "Demonlord" Hero Trial
  • Fixed Arcane Staff ignoring manalock
  • Fixed a hardlock related to the Scholar ability completing Smog and Fruit of Labor at the same time
  • Fixed First Aid bypassing the Active stage mod
  • Fixed a hardlock related to Wishlist, Gravedigger and Gluttony
  • Fixed a typo in the Wishpool tooltip
  • Fixed Mirror manalocking itself for 30 turns instead of 40

  • The "Death" Hero Trial effect is now capable of multikills
  • Mobile only: Fickle mod now operates on a longtap
  • Fixed a crash that could occur after reloading a Native stage
  • Fixed some objects losing their custom colors after popping out of bubbles
  • Fixed layering depth of objects popped out of bubbles
  • Fixed artifact requirements on one of the Mythic Emblems
  • Fixed visual glitch related to Convulsing stage mod
  • Improved performance of "confine cursor" option


Hotfix #1 @ 2:07 PM EST - Fixed Present crash.
Hotfix #2 @ 2:40 PM EST - Fixed game client closing at the end of a quest, and Starpond not letting you buy an item that you have just enough Tokens to afford.

Great news - we just released a massive balance patch for DemonCrawl! It contains reworked masteries, reworked stage mods, new items, tons of bug fixes, and much more. Did we mention there's even a new boss?

  • New avatar for Patreon supporters: FLIPPER
  • New inventory for Patreon supporters: CINDERS
  • Added keyword: Duplicast - "Activate a copy of one of your charged magic items. Targets chosen randomly."
  • Added keyword: Manalock - "For a number of turns, you cannot activate this magic item. It cannot gain nor lose mana."
  • New stage mod: Scrappy - "Monsters deal extra damage equal to the number of nearby cells that are not solved."
  • New boss: Heckaslug - The Poison Monger
  • New boss mod: Profane - "Whenever a Dark Heart is collected, randomly distribute 50 turns of manalock across your magic items."
  • New boss mod: Greasy - "If the boss can't move, it relocates to a random empty cell."

  • New crafting material: Dust of Chaos - "Upgrade a broken Lv1 sigil to the next level."
  • Every quest now has a sign somewhere that indicates which boss you will find at the end
  • Added button in the credits screen to view top Patreon supporters
  • Added option to disable the freezeframe effect when rare loot or bosses spawn

  • Guardian item has been renamed to Sentry Gnome in order to differentiate it from the mastery
  • The Beyond menu now utilizes a scrollbar UI instead of pagination
  • Added new sign messages for some lesser-known mechanics
  • The toast notification for Pillow now states how many turns were passed
  • The "reset options" button now gives you a 5-second window to cancel
  • If a syntax error is encountered in a translation file, DemonCrawl will mention this in its crash dialog
  • Spy III ability can no longer activate before monsters have spawned
  • Minor improvements to the appearance of quest thumbnails
  • Updated sprite for Dirty stage mod
  • Beta only: new items are forcibly favored to make sure they show up more often during beta testing - this does not use up your favor slots
  • Beta only: Heckaslug boss will appear 50% of the time
  • Windows only: you can right-click on the difficulty slider to move it in the opposite direction

  • Exorcist II rework: "Whenever you lose an omen, gain souls and defense equal to the number of omens you've lost this run."
  • Exorcist III charges reduced from 6 to 4
  • Wizard I subtle but important change: "The first Item Shop in the quest only contains magic items."
  • Wizard II rework: "Whenever you collect a diamond, duplicast a random magic item."
  • Firefly II has been rolled into Firefly I
  • Firefly II rework: "Whenever you chord a burning cell, shoot a flare in a random direction."
  • Guardian II rework: "Whenever you earn the Untouchable award, reduce the power of the next stage by your defense."
  • Spy III charges increased from 3 to 4
  • Adjusted the position of some special stages in Beyond to prevent the possibility of a last-stage Smithy
  • Opening the same cell twice in a row no longer increases your chain (it doesn't break the chain either)
  • Iron Will buff: "Gain 3 defense whenever your armor breaks." (Up from 2 defense)
  • Deerstalker buff: all cell values will be corrected when the item is equipped
  • Binoculars and Divine Binoculars buff: Minions will spawn almost twice as often as before
  • Mage will now choose his random cells a little more intelligently, e.g. he won't target a visible cell if the item states "target hidden cell"
  • The above targeting logic also applies to duplicasting random items
  • Familiars can no longer collect Dark Hearts
  • Genie Lamp can no longer bring you to a Smithy
  • Elemental Knuckles price reduced from 31 to 26

  • After the second completion, the stage will become more difficult, similar to Mystic Statues
  • Living objects that were spawned into burning cells will burn to death at the start of the following turn
  • Bosses will die if they stand in burning cells for 3 consecutive turns
  • Boss burn tolerance increases by their number of boss mods
  • Dirty Soap now activates Lumberjack II
  • Mementos can no longer drop from library research

  • Fixed ambiguous targeting description on Handbell, Surgical Saw, and Ritual Chalk, which will improve their mage/duplicast targeting
  • Blindfold now activates before the Abstract stage mod
  • Reverted change to Paragon Rod so that it can drop items with cost 0 again (however, it won't drop Mementos like it used to)
  • Book items and Leather Vest now benefit from Electric cells
  • Multiple copies of a stage mod that do not increase difficulty (e.g. Nightmare) will no longer provide additional score
  • Tangleweed can no longer apply the Double mod to a stage that already has it
  • Judging mod now stacks
  • Vengeful mod now stacks

Hotfix #1 @ 6:55 PM EST: Fixed crash related to Frothy stage mod. Also, the Greasy boss mod now has a unique color scheme.

Today is the grand opening of the DemonCrawl Beta Program!
