Total War: Warhammer 3's Kislev now features giant cats and gun sleighs

We've known Kislev will be a Total War: Warhammer III race ever since that incredibly metal announcement trailer for the Total War game was dropped earlier in the year. We then got a glimpse of some units and capabilities via the recent survival battles reveal, which Richard enjoyed very much and I felt wasn't terrible.

But who are the Kislev? Why are they a fan favourite and why does Tzarina Katarin skate about on ice like she's some gothic warrior Olympian? All this and more is answered in Kislev's official 'race introduction' trailer which has just been dropped for the highly anticipated strategy game. It stars Tzarina Katarin herself, as well as showcasing some new units for the faction.

The trailer uses in-engine footage, so it's not technically gameplay but everything you see is how it should look in the final game. Various Kislev units are on display, from the Streltsi with their hilariously awesome gun axes to newcomers such as Sabre-toothed Ice Cats. We've also got bear-powered sleighs that have a bunch of absolute lads in them with rifles.

Total Warhammer 3's Kislev army has even more bears than I expected

One thing I had not known about the Kislev until I saw Total War: Warhammer 3's new trailer: their armies have sleighs full of riflemen pulled by bears. To be honest, it's exactly the sort of nonsense I should have expected from a Games Workshop faction of magical Notrussians. And yet, I am surprised and delighted. Here, come watch the trailer to see more of their forces, including polar bears, spectral snow leopards, and... some sort of Rasputin?

I'm a historical fan, but I liked Total War: Warhammer 3's battles

Recently we were given the opportunity to play one of Total War: Warhammer III's new 'survival' battles - a climatic set-piece engagement that sees us fighting through the stronghold of Khorne, one of the four Chaos gods. You can also read our resident Warhammer fan Rich's comprehensive impressions on the battle, but I'm here to offer a different perspective; one that starts with a confession.

I've never understood the appeal of the Total Warhammer series. I prefer the historical Total Wars and I've never played Warhammer Fantasy (I played 40k, because I wasn't a nerd.) But, as a dutiful fan of strategy games, I gave it a try, playing the first Total War: Warhammer a couple of years after it first came out. It didn't go well.

Nothing about how I thought Total War games should be played seemed to hold true. The time-to-kill felt off, tactics and formations counted for less... and what happened to sieges? What's all this magic nonsense? I didn't like it, but playing Total War: Warhammer III gave me a feeling of optimism I wasn't expecting.

Total War: Warhammer 3 adds tower defence to its battles and it's perfect

It's hard to be too cynical about the climactic battles that conclude many of Total War: Warhammer II's campaigns. If a line of rotten shipwreck-automata blasting arm-cannons at spiky Dark Elves while a giant fish swims around your underwater battlefield doesn't make you smile, then you're as heartless as they are.

But these battles are also a mechanical fudge. 20 units with fixed health and vigour have a natural lifespan, and while the healing superpowers you often get to wield go some way to extending it, they're an inelegant, partial solution. Playing one of Total War: Warhammer III's new survival battles has made this clear to me. Pitched by CA as the game's 'boss fights', survival battles crib from tower defence games to create 40-minute spectacles that, on this evidence at least, fully deliver on what the devs intend.

I play as Tzarina Katarin of Kislev as she leads an expedition into the Realm of Chaos. Specifically, she's crashing Khorne's balmy summer retreat, the Brass Citadel. I need to take and hold three capture points to progress through the map to a final showdown, where an Exalted Bloodthirster (the biggest, angriest of Khorne's daemons) awaits.
