Total War: Warhammer 3 should settle its fights with games of Blood Bowl

Picture this: you're playing a Total War: Warhammer III Mortal Empires campaign as the noble Skaven (we're assuming it's in the game). Your glorious Under-Empire is expanding at pace, but you're short on cash. "Skavenslaves," you shout, "bring me the rat-phone, so I may call upon my old mate Karl Franz for a trade deal." Despite your generous offer, the human emperor won't budge.

There is but one solution. One strategy that would force Franz to deliver his finest imperial cheeses straight to your snout. I am, of course, talking about Creative Assembly including Blood Bowl as a diplomacy option in Total War: Warhammer III.

Blood Bowl is a parody of American Football set in a sort-of-but-not-quite version of Warhammer Fantasy's Old World, where disputes are settled via hyper-violent sports. In the pantheon of Games Workshop games, it's something of a cockroach. First emerging in 1986, it has survived through a mix of official support and fan torch-bearing right up to 2016's reboot and last year's second edition.

Total War: Warhammer 3 Cathay faction - everything we know

One of the most exciting revelations in the recent Total War: Warhammer 3 announcement trailer was that Grand Cathay, the Warhammer world's analogue of China, would be a launch race in the upcoming strategy game.

This is a big deal. Cathay has existed in Warhammer since at least 1984, when it was mentioned in the lore book for the tabletop game's second edition, and in the almost 30 years since a steady trickle of further details has accumulated to give a decent sense of its armies and its culture, as we'll discover. But despite this, Grand Cathay - canonically the largest human nation in the world - has never had an official army book. Even official depictions of the nation or its troops have been amazingly rare.

This means that Cathay's appearance in Warhammer 3 is, for all intents and purposes, its debut as a fully realised army. It's amazing that that's happening in a third party's game, and speaks to the trust that Warhammer creator Games Workshop has placed in Total War developer Creative Assembly.

Total War: Warhammer 3 is Steam top seller in China

The Total War: Warhammer 3 trailer dialed many players' excitement up after it was revealed this week, and not least in China. Since going up for pre-order, the strategy game has been the top seller on Steam in the country for several days.

As spotted on ResetEra, Total War: Warhammer 3 is sitting atop the Steam chart for Chinese players at the minute, outdoing its performance elsewhere. Although it went straight to number one all around the world, it's since dropped to third in English-speaking regions, whereas in China, it continues to stand tall. The sequel is outdoing not just global hits like Valheim or Nioh 2, but Chinese developed games too, such as Tale of Immortal, now in second place, and Dyson Sphere Program, now in fifth.

The voracious demand likely stems from the appearance of Cathay, a Warhammer equivalent to China that takes some obvious nods from the history and mythology of the region, in the latest trailer. This will be Cathay's most prominent appearance as a faction ever, in the entirety of Warhammer, making Total War: Warhammer 3 exciting for anyone knee deep in the lore, and especially for Chinese fans eager to play as their homeland.
