Sega und Creative Assembly haben mit Total War: Warhammer III den "epischen Höhepunkt" der Strategiespiel-Trilogie angekündigt, welche vor rund fünf Jahren die beiden Universen zusammengeführt hat. Total War: Warhammer 3 revealed, and Cathay confirmed, in extremely metal trailer

Yes, it was Total War: Warhammer III. Last night we reported on how Creative Assembly had been teasing something with a series of animated shorts. It seemed a bit much to just be about a new DLC, and further digging by the community pointed to clues that suggested something bigger was coming. Luckily, we didn't have to wait long to find out what.

We've known this has been in the works for a while, but Creative Assembly has now formally announced the third entry for their popular strategy game series set within the iconic Warhammer Fantasy universe.

Confirmed races for the new game so far include fan-favourites Kislev, the four factions of Chaos (Khorne, Tzeentch, Slaanesh, and Nurgle) and in a surprising move, Cathay. We're confident there's more to come, but Cathay is certainly an interesting choice. Essentially Warhammer Fantasy's version of China, they've barely had any attention paid to them in the old tabletop line, which means the opportunity is ripe for CA to fill in the blanks. If only the studio had experience making strategy games based in China...

Everything in the Total War: Warhammer 3 trailer, from Kislev to Cathay

At long last, the better part of five years after the first Total War: Warhammer released, the trailer for the third and last in the trilogy has finally dropped. And it is metal af, as they say.

It's also packed with details, and tells us an awful lot about the direction developer Creative Assembly is taking with this third game after years of speculation. Are they going to do Cathay? How will they handle the multi-factional Daemons of Chaos? Any sign of the Ogre Kingdoms?

Sadly the answer to that third point is a "no" for now - though check out our guide to the Total War: Warhammer 3 races for the latest developments - and there's also no sign of a Total War: Warhammer 3 release date more specific than some time this year. But we've still learned a lot, and to ensure you don't miss a thing, please enjoy this thorough breakdown of the new trailer. I can't be sure of having spotted everything, but there's a lot here about the game's setting, factions, units, and more.

Creative Assembly has finally made Total War: Warhammer III official after years of anticipation, and while the studio has only provided a few concrete details on what to expect, the simple announcement has been more than enough for eager fans. Total War: Warhammer III is already the best-selling game on Steam.

Total War: Warhammer III shot to the top of Steam's global top sellers chart shortly after the announcement, and it's been cemented there ever since. The price is set at $59.99 / £49.99 / €59.99, and you will get an additional race as a pre-order bonus - though we don't yet know what that race is going to be.

Steam's top seller ranking is a bit nebulous, but it ranks games based on revenue generated in an unspecified (but short) period of time. Warhammer III is currently outranking recent indie hits like Valheim and Tale of Immortal. We'll have to wait for the weekly sales ranking this weekend to know if Warhammer III can hold off the entire week's worth of sales. (I'm guessing yes.)

One of the biggest questions and causes of speculation around Total War: Warhammer III is simply: what will the launch races be?

Developer Creative Assembly has promised to include all 15 of the Warhammer eighth edition core races in its Total War games, which at this point leaves only Ogre Kingdoms and Daemons of Chaos. The studio has also promised that each game would have four races at launch. But with the Daemons sort-of breaking down into four smaller armies, one for each of the Dark Gods, how would Creative Assembly handle that? And who, other than ogres and daemons, could otherwise populate the new map?

Such were the questions ahead of the Total Warhammer 3 reveal trailer. Now that it's dropped, we have answers. And we're also able to speculate further into the future with a little more accuracy. These are all the races currently confirmed for Total War: Warhammer 3, plus a few others that are native to the lands where it will likely be set, and thus are candidates to arrive later via DLC.
