What to do when my game crashes?
This is something that we saw a lot on the Steam discussions, Discord and socials. We are mostly aware of the crashes and what causes them - but we don’t expect you to dig through all the posts here to get your answer.
So the solution is here! All the most common crashes, what causes them and what to do in case they happen to you.
Shader/graphic error - we know what causes the problem,
Data packages problems - we know part of the problems,
Black screen - we don’t know what causes it yet.
If you haven’t found a crash on this list, there is a chance you are the (un)lucky one who got an entirely new error message.
In case that happens to you: don’t panic. You have few options, pick the one that suits you the most.
Post the error message here, on Steam. It is the slowest form of communication, but some people prefer it.
Send us an email to [email protected]. It is quicker than Steam and allows you to send us attachments with your save files.
The quickest one, join our Discord server and create a ticket. We will get pinged and will be able to help you almost immediately.
IMPORTANT: Please, let us know if the solutions listed below worked or not. It is really important for us, so we can implement new fixes and hopefully get to the bottom of the problems. Thank you!
Now to the solutions. We will be using a shortened name for Cowboy Life Simulator - CLS.
The standard ones:
Update your drivers, especially the graphic card drivers. Also, make sure you DON’T use drivers in the development version!
Check your game files integrity. To do that, follow this instruction:
1. Right-click CLS in the library on Steam,
2. Go to the “Properties” menu, it is at the bottom of the little window that pops up,
3. Go to the “Installed files” menu, it is the third option from the top,
4. Click the “Verify integrity of game files” button,
5. Run the game and check, if it worked.
If it didn’t work, try the next solution.
More advanced solutions:
Make a copy of your Save Files, store them in a safe place and delete the originals. To do that, follow this instruction:
1. The files will be located in one of those locations:
- %USERPROFILE%/AppData/Local/CowBoyBeta/Saved/SaveGames
- [SteamFolder]/SteamApps/common/Cowboy Life Simulator/Saved/SaveGames
2. Take those files and copy them, store them in a different folder.
3. Delete the files in the CLS folder.
4. Run the game and check if it works, put the files back in their place.
If not, go to the next solution.
Check out our test builds. To do that, follow this instruction:
1. Right-click CLS in the library on Steam,
2. Go to the “Properties” menu, it is at the bottom of the little window that pops up,
3. Go to the “Game versions and betas” menu, it is the fourth option from the top,
4. In the “private versions” place this code: OddQubitLovesIt,
5. Click “check code”,
6. A branch should appear, select it and let the game update,
Try running the game, please RECORD if it crashes or make some screenshots and send them to us. Methods of contacting us are listed at the start of the post.
If you still experience crashes, please take the WHOLE Saved folder and send it to us. Methods of contacting us are listed at the start of the post. The folder should be located here: [SteamLocation]\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Cowboy Life Simulator\CowBoyBeta\Saved
If you have any questions, problems or something in the post is not clear, tell us! We will answer and add edits to the post if new crashes appear.
We are working on fixes for the crashes. Your help is very much appreciated and wanted. Big thanks to those who help us test and to those who are patiently waiting for the solutions. You guys rock!!!
