JDM’s campaign and events!

Ossu!

If you’ve been following our devlogs, you know what to expect when JDM: Japanese Drift Master releases on May 21. However, there’s still one big question mark that we haven’t officially tackled and discussed in more detail - what’s the gameplay loop like? What to expect from a ‘minute-to-minute’ experience, which you will delve into on launch?

To best illustrate, here’s a fresh new RAW gameplay from the game, captured from the end of Chapter 01, where Touma faces off with Scorpion. We quickly clicked through the story pages to avoid bigger spoilers, but be warned - you will find a few of them in the footage below.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
Story Campaign
You play as Touma, a Polish drifter, who comes to Japan to restart his life. With the help of a few friends, he gets up on his feet and starts to compete in local racing events, growing his reputation and building a name for himself. The story is told through a series of events/missions intertwined with manga pages.

You always start in the open world, riding out of your garage. The game will then mark the next Story event on your map, which will progress the narrative. When you drive to the spot, you will be able to interact with a marker and launch the next mission. The event will most often open up with a manga page (or a few) and then proceed to the race. After completion, you will be back in the open world, and a new marker will show up on your map.

Of course, you don’t need to push story events one after another, the whole game world is open for you from the moment you step out of your garage, so it’s up to you if you want to roam around Guntama in between the Main Story events.
Story Events
During the campaign, you will take part in a plethora of events: some happening directly on the streets of Guntama, some on dedicated racing tracks (which you will also be able to visit from the open world at any time). You will compete in drifting events - where style points decide the winners, or in grip races, in which you have to cross the finish line first. Sometimes, you will need to be first AND race in the best style, so take notice of the win conditions during each event.

Story Events do not need to be connected to a race - without spoiling too much, let us only say that you will work for a sushi restaurant and you will be challenged by various characters to show off your skills. You will also make a few enemies on your journey, so expect chases to be part of the experience.

JDM: Japanese Drift Master is releasing May 21st. If you haven’t done so, please consider wishlisting and following the game, to never miss a beat (it also helps us out with visibility!), thanks!

It’s time to assemble your perfect grip car!

Ossu!

In JDM: Japanese Drift Master , speed is of the utmost importance, however we all must know how to use it wisely. For example, when drifting, taking your foot off the gas can help you maintain better control or steer clear of obstacles. The same applies to mountain pass roads, where rushing too fast can cause you to veer off course.

However, there are cases where the highest possible speed is most desirable. Grip races are a perfect example – in these events, the only thing that matters is the time it takes to complete the track, so you need to extract every ounce of power from your car. And you know what? We are about to tell you exactly how to do that.
How to Tune a Grip Car?

Similar to the previous “Tuning Guide”, it’s worth noting that each driver has a unique playstyle and preferences, which is why we encourage you to experiment with various combinations and settings.

With that in mind, the following hints should be taken more as a suggestion than a ready-made recipe for success. However, this doesn’t mean we can’t rely on a few proven tricks! Luckily, among grip experts, there are tried-and-true techniques that can significantly improve your chances when facing off against other drivers. Let’s take a look!
 • Engine: In this step, there is no room for half-measures. We will need the best possible ECU, strong Intake and Exhaust, and the most powerful Internals you can afford. Same goes for the Boost - the more advanced, the better.
 • Suspension: We need it low and stable. Not only to enhance our car with an awesome, bold look, but also to ensure better grip on the road. You are sure to appreciate them, when you hit those impressive, near-top speeds. Aim for stiffer sway bars variants. Adjustable control arms are an option but are not necessary as they can do more harm than good in some setups.
 • Powertrain: Be sure to try out the dedicated, sport clutch. Just like with the control arms, an adjustable gearbox is not necessary, but you can play around with the gear ratios to better suit your preferences. On the other hand, an adjustable differential is recommended, but as a starting point the stock one will do the trick.
 • Brakes and Tires: Make no mistake, brakes are extremely important in grip races. Choose the best possible variant! When it comes to tires, we strive to achieve the best grip - this is the most important feature you should pay attention to.
 • Nitrous: Do we even need to say a word? 🔥😈
The new parts are just the beginning. Now it's time to fine-tune them all!

Now that your dream car is equipped with top-of-the-line equipment, we can move on to setting things up. Keep in mind that perfecting your car’s setup doesn’t happen overnight, so don’t stress if things don’t click right away. Mastery comes with trial, error, and plenty of fine-tuning; however, we’re confident you’ll get there. And now, let’s cut to the chase and get to work, shall we?

Let’s start with height. Our goal with the up-and-down adjustment is to achieve a clean fit between the wheels and the arches. Try to find that one sweet spot to avoid both rubbing and an overly raised chassis. Next, stick to the “more tire - more traction” rule, and pick the widest possible rims and tires. Simple as that!

As for the turning range and, the standard one is completely sufficient. Last but not least - wheel alignment - you want to keep as much surface area of the tire on the road, so look for neutral camber values of around 0,0.
Ready to hit the gas?

We hope you had fun diving into the world of grip-focused tuning in JDM: Japanese Drift Master! Our aim is to strike the perfect balance between realism and ease-of-use so players of all levels can experience the excitement of building and fine-tuning their dream car. We simply can't wait to see your grip beasts on the road and hear the legends of your awesome racing deeds. Speed records - your time is over!
How to Tune a Drift Car

We are aware that each driver has their own unique playstyle and preferences, so we encourage you to experiment with different combinations and settings. Adapting a car for drifting involves many variables, but a few core rules always hold true - you can think of them as a base during your fine-tuning adventure. What are they?
 • For optimal drifting performance, you’ll want to maximize horsepower and torque. In fact, you can never have too much power, especially when you lose some of your speed through heavy friction. And while the engine follows the rule of "the stronger, the better", the suspension setup is where the real magic happens.
 • Lowering the suspension is the best way to increase stability when drifting. The same goes for stiffer suspension variants, which will provide a grounded, road-hugging sensation while keeping tilting and rocking to a minimum.
 • Invest in a proper angle kit, being an essential element during long, deep drifts and maximize your turning range.
 • The wheel alignment and tilt adjustments are so unique and varied as drivers of Guntama themselves. Do not hesitate to experiment, although if you'd like, you can back up your decisions with these suggestions: negative tilt for the front wheels and slight toe-out alignment near-zero degrees for the rear wheels.

Do you still feel like you need more specific information and examples? Be sure to take advantage of the sample drifting setup down below.
Sample drifting setup - ready for you to use and modify!

Handling:
 • Use Fully Adjustable Coilover Suspension, stiffer sway bars and adjustable control arms to fine-tune your wheel angles.
 • Choose a professional steering system (angle kit) to maximize turning range.
 • A welded differential is recommended for maintaining a consistent drift.
 • Nitrous has minimal impact on drift handling (such insights will mainly benefit the most experienced players and are tailored to their personal preferences), so focus on suspension and steering instead. On the other hand, you may want to mount larger, more powerful brakes.
Suspension Height:
 • Lower the car, so the wheels sit just inside the wheel arches, but ensure they don’t rub when driving. This change will grant you more stability on the road.
 • Stiffen the suspension to prevent excessive body roll, but don't overdo it. For drifting, a more balanced suspension setup that allows for controlled body roll and weight transfer is generally preferred, as it helps to maintain the balance between traction and slip, making the car more responsive to throttle inputs.
Wheels and Alignment:
 • Front wheels: Tilt them to around -3 degrees for better turn-in response.
 • Rear wheels: The rule here is simple - if you have tuned a car with much horsepower, keep them close to 0 degrees to maintain the best traction.
 • Wheel alignment: Slightly toe-out (-0.2) the front wheels and toe-in (+0.1) the rear wheels.
Put your garage to good use
