DevLog #2: "Think Big, Start Small"

Unlike people, airports aren’t made equal. When you usually hear ‘airport’, the first image that comes to mind is a great sprawling airport with a dozen planes both arriving and ready to depart at a moment’s notice. But while other types of airport might not be as immense and visually impressive, they are by no means less important. During your career as a security guard looking for contraband, you’ll have the chance to progress your career through a variety of airports and learn the ins and outs of their functions. But here’s a brief overview.

To begin with, the main distinction to be made is the size of the airport. Naturally, don’t expect large planes to touch down on a place that can hardly keep tabs on three or four dozen people. Small airports more often see use by private investors, personal planes or small-time commercial freighting. Of course, just because passengers aren’t involved doesn’t mean contraband doesn’t exist. Plenty of people like to haul things that are strictly forbidden, doubly so when they’re protected by a thick layer of private investment money. Cargo crates, small-time luggage or personal investigation will be your bread and butter on these types of airports. Remember to be ever vigilant.

In a more familiar topic, big and bustling airports can be either used for either service of freight - more often than not, they’re frequently utilised for both means. Your old repertoire of tasks and duties won’t shrink, but expect it to in fact grow significantly as you will be forced to not only deal with people, but also with an even greater abundance of cargo. On the happier side, due to the cosmopolitan nature of such airports, you’ll not likely encounter individuals of high renown flying their personal, small-time planes. Over here, things are done in bulk and large.

On the other hand, the more people, the higher the chance of an unfortunate accident. Be wary of crowds getting riled up one by another, make sure to keep health standards in check. Airports are the first and often most important line of defence against an unwanted pandemic just waiting to strike.

Remember - the safety of passengers is in your hands. Do your best!

Airport Contraband gets new features and content

There is some great news for Airport Contraband. We are happy to announce that with the large interest in the game, we decided to make some great improvements to existing game mechanics, add more content when it comes to contraband and on top of that entirely new content and features for dealing with epidemic and pandemic outbreaks.

Airport Contraband is also getting a complete revamp of its career mode. You will now start your career on a tiny airport in South America where smuggling and trafficking brings the contraband aspect of the game to a whole new level. Unlike at the modern airport in the US, the methods here are rather crude, but the things people are trying to smuggle are in a whole new league. And why not, when a handful of cash can make the officials look the other way? Will you fall to the allure of bribes, too?

Getting your job done well, finding the contraband people try to bring on board and not getting caught doing something questionable yourself will see you advance in your career. Soon you will leave the heat in the south behind for new challenges that will await you at a modern major US airport.

Airport Contraband will also receive entirely new game mechanics and content related to the hot topic of epidemics and pandemics. These events will bring everything that’s happening on the airport to a screeching halt and it will be up to the player to organize quarantine and spread prevention measures without turning the situation into utter chaos. Angry passengers, scared colleagues, flights cancelled en masse are just a few of the things that have to be dealt with.

To reflect these additions, we made changes to the store page and while at it also updated the game's teaser video, check it out.

DevLog #1 “Searching Planes”

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Searching airplanes, especially large passenger airplanes, is a part of the game that generated a lot of interest lately. To answer one of the most common questions: yes, you will actually enter a plane and search it. We prepared the above footage to give you an idea what it looks like. While it’s not final graphics and the UI is still missing many elements, it showcases the idea itself quite nicely.

This part of the game won’t however be available right from the start. It is tight into the career system of the game so you will have to perform other tasks first and do a good job at those. You will also have to start with smaller airplanes first, but make no mistake: searching a private jet of a rich eccentric is quite exciting, too.
Your career progression also determines who will accompany you when it comes to searching planes. At this level you won’t get any people who are not qualified to do it, but the quality of who you will work with still varies. Given that there is a set time frame in which the task has to be accomplished, the better the people you get assigned to help you (or you them) plays a role in your chance to succeed reaching a higher score.

When it comes to searching planes there are good reasons we let you start with smaller planes first. A plane by definition is a complex machine and as such offers incredibly creative ways to hide contraband. We want you to familiarize yourself with planes in general to actually stand a chance finding illegal goods on a big airliner. The passenger cabin is only part of the plane, its cargo bay and the areas with mechanics, hydraulics all other systems are the really tricky parts.

That is also the reason why we decided to simplify the search mechanics itself in order to have you focus more on some creative thinking. We want your wits to be more important than the game’s mechanics itself as we believe that makes for a more rewarding experience.
