Chapter 3 Screenshots!

Hello Everyone!!

We're very close to completion on testing the widescreen update to Chapters 1 and 2, but for the time-being I thought some screenshots from Chapter 3 might be a quick and neat little teaser to help hold everyone over. As always, all content is subject to change and nothing so far is final. I hope all of you like what you're seeing so far though! I'm very excited to show what I've got so far :)

and a map I am currently working on:

Thank you all for your support and encouragement! I can't wait to share the next chapter in Deirdre's journey with all of you!

New Features and Ch. 3 Progress Update!

Hello everyone!

It's hard to believe it's been nearly 6 months since the Chapter 2 release, but here we are! I've been thrilled to see people's reactions and wonderfully kind words concerning the game recently, I can always see room for improvement in the game, but it's reassuring to know that people are still enjoying the new content regardless. I am floored at the amount of people who have played the game so far! A BIG thank you to everyone who has played, streamed, shared with friends, and reached out to me about the game. It's your encouragement and support that helps me push myself to keep improving the game and press onward as we all share in Deirdre's journey together!

There's plenty to discuss, so let's get cracking!! :)

"Expanding Horizons"
This is something I've admittedly been ignoring for a while, but I've gotten this question numerous times from players...."Why isn't the game in 16:9 (widescreen)?" I stuck to this decision for two reasons:

- My aesthetic rationale was that the 4:3 aspect ratio made the game feel more like an older RPG, appropriate to the SNES/Genesis era. While in principal that's true, most of us aren't playing on 4:3 monitors or CRTs. With the rise of retro games found on various platforms, it could be argued this isn't a big deal...but I doubt I'd receive complaints that the game ISN'T in 4:3 from many players.
- The game will not scroll/run as smoothly, was my other reasoning. RPG Maker creates games in a very oddball resolution of 816x624, plugins have to be used to manipulate this. Kedemara currently runs in 941x720, the way to get a vertical resolution of 720p while maintaining the same aspect ratio/proportions. While framerates always game back great on a variety of systems, when bumping this up to a more standard 1280x720 resolution, I saw the game ran basically the same. There will always be some stutter with scrolling since the nature of Javascript and the engine may cause this. Tl;dr = I wanted the game to run smoother, but in 1280x720 it runs just as well.

From here forward, I'll be designing Chapter 3 to run in a widescreen aspect ratio. By the next patch I release, Chapters 1+2 WILL have this applied, which will be before Chapter 3 is finished or released. A few sidenotes to keep in mind on the shift for Chapters 1 and 2:

- This will only affect the viewable area of the game, so graphical assets like tiles, sprites, and animations should be largely unaffected. The placement of some enemies in combat will need adjusting, but that is very quick and easy to fix. On the whole, you'll just see more of the map. If that particular map is smaller than 1280x720 you'll still see a black area, this is just how the game handles "blank space", but for larger areas you'll notice a big difference...Amie pun slightly intended ;-)
- When you change resolutions or use various formatting "tags", Word Wrap can do some funky things in RPG Maker text boxes...so spacing and such is all done manually when I make them. Because of this, a great majority of the dialogue text in Chapters 1+2 (and the earlier part of Chapter 3) will have dialogue text that is very left-aligned. It will all be visible, but there will be some extra space to the right as increasing the game's resolution also increases the text space in dialogue boxes.
- Changing this will be a methodical process, but I'll start with title screens, center-aligned text announcements, and cutscene dialogue that is more straightforward without branching options. With how much time I'll need to be sinking into Chapter 3's development...it may be some time before I can get 100% of the text filled-out for 16:9 text boxes. Just know it probably bothers me far more than it bothers any of you lol.

I have one of my trusted Alpha-testers scouring through the game for events/cutscenes that would be obviously affected by this change. I can think of a few but wanted to have someone check for anything I may have forgotten. These will take precedence as "popouts" and such can be a little jarring to the player. I won't push it out until it has been combed-through adequately. All in all, she's told me it's quite enjoyable playing in the new widescreen layout and feels the change is worthwhile. I hope all of you like the change as well!
Chapter 3 News
In these past 6 months, I can honestly say things haven't been smooth sailing in regards to everyday life and local circumstances for me. I always say it, but I'm not as far along as I'd like for this current chapter. However, just like with Ch.2, I didn't realize how much content I already had. My main Alpha-tester has run through what I have for Chapter 3 so far and I'm sitting at about 3-3.5 hours so far. Not great, but I'm going to be pushing myself harder to get progress sped up.

- The cities are going to be MUCH larger in this Chapter, so a place like Clachandun will be more common to see than Corning. Some of these cities will span several maps that you'll transition between, so the scale is much more grand in this chapter.
- There will be some flexibility in how you experience the story later in the Chapter, essentially you won't HAVE to do some of the story in a set order, but this will introduce the overworld map and a few other things I'd like to see happen in this chapter.
- ANOTHER new character will be joining your party in Chapter 3! I've run this character by a few of my Testers and friends, and she's been a big hit thus far. Definitely larger than life, with plenty of personality to spare, I hope you'll grow to love her just as much as the rest of Deirdre's friends!
- Cutscenes! Cutscenes everywhere!! I can get a little trigger-happy with cutscenes, but I am working on getting a better balance between large text-only conversations and describing past events and such with "cutscenes". The large amounts of text can get tiring, so finding the right groove for both is something I'm still working on. When I have some more content completed, I'll eventually be posting a teaser trailer for Chapter 3 to show some of the progress. I'm very happy with how things are transpiring, I certainly hope everyone else will be too!

Sorry for the super long, WAY overdue post! I'm very excited to show everyone what is in store for Chapter 3, and I hope you guys are excited to experience it as well!

Kedemara One-Year Anniversary Stream + AMA!

Hey everyone!

As the title says, Oct. 30th is the 1-year mark for Kedemara! It's hard to believe it's been a year already, it both feels fast and still seems like much has transpired since then. It has been an eventful year for myself, and I certainly hope that good things are to come for everyone in the following years. Enough about that though, let's get to the real news!

I'll be incorporating an AMA/Q&A for Kedemara-related questions into my stream on Oct. 30th. The stream itself will consist of this, along with some tech news discussion about the RTX 3000 series cards vs. the Radeon 6000 ones, some discussion on RPG Maker MV/MZ, and I intend to squeeze in some gameplay/discussion on the new demo for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity for Nintendo Switch too. My stream will be very laid-back, so no need to dress up or anything...just show up and have fun ;)

The stream will be tentatively starting about 8pm CST on Oct. 30th. on my Twitch channel, link is below:
https://www.twitch.tv/pluckykun

So come on by with your questions or thoughts about Chapters 1 and 2, see if you can squeeze any info out of me on Chapter 3, or just sit back and have fun while we discuss tech news and take a peep at the new Age of Calamity demo!

Thank you all so much! I hope to see you there :)

Face Graphics Update and (last...) Achievements Fix

Hey Everyone!

I will try and keep this quick, as it's a minor update and a "CYA" announcement regarding my previous patch update...
Extra Face Graphics!
Nothing Aetheria-shattering, BUT I came across some very nice and free-to-use graphical edits to the stock NPC and Actor face graphics for RPG Maker MV, they were on the RPG Maker forums. This should make some of the NPC dialogue encounters a little less bland. These have been added in to nearly every dialogue encounter using stock NPC face graphics, so if something seems different that may be what you're noticing! You can email me if you'd like the forum link to grab them for your project, just remember to credit the right people! (check my credits roll for all parties involved)
Achivements Achievements Fix
I felt this one was a little too funny to just say "It's fixed" and move on from there, so here we go!
I refuse to "name any names" on who made it, but a 3rd party plugin creator is who made the paid Steam Achievements script used in my game. I had every.single.one working except for the two mentioned in my previous patch update ("Buccaneer Buster" and "Unfortunate Telling"). When I looked at the plugin commands for both, I saw that part of it was capitalized and that "Achievement" was spelled "Achivement" as well, so I made everything lower case and fixed the typo assuming that was the problem.

Well, here we are again today and it's STILL not working for everyone! I spent 30 mins going back and forth trying to figure out what the problem was, until I realized all my other achievements just had the script command copied from the ReadMe file and I never once noticed the spelling... The plugin was coded so that the word "Achievement" was supposed to be (incorrectly) spelled "A-C-H-I-V-E-M-E-N-T" in order for it to work. So I spelled it wrong when typing in the plugin command and sure enough, that fixed the problem ːsteamfacepalmː
Liiiittle Chapter 3 Update...
Chapter 2 hasn't even been out for 2 months yet, and I still can't help but talk about Chapter 3 content! XD

At this phase I'm alternating between mapping, eventing, and fine dialogue scripting...but it's already quite exciting to see where things are heading. There is ABOUT 20-30 mins of content already in a "playable state", which just tells me this chapter may end up even bigger than Chapter 2 was. It's difficult to gauge the scope at this time, as I know the major story arc(s) already, but when a good idea pops into my head for a scene or interaction, I don't want it to go to waste...so the story can swell quite a bit over time. I'm focusing a great deal on fleshing out the previously presented lore, expanding on the history/experiences of characters you heard of from the distant past, and improving on the cutscenes and dramatic interludes in the story. All in all, I hope Chapter 3 can improve on what I presented in Chapters 1 and 2, making the story that much more enjoyable for everyone. I can't wait to show everyone what Chapter 3 has in store! (but it may be a while...lol)

Hopefully everyone got a little chuckle out of the Steam Achievements fiasco and enjoys some of the updates, but everything should be 100% now and I'll get back to work on Chapter 3! Thank you to those who let me know and I hope everyone is enjoying the game so far!

Minor Achievement Update/Fix

Hey everyone!

Just as a quick update, there was a problem with two very early-on achievements in Longdale ("Buccaneer Buster" and "Unfortunate Telling") that were the result of something being capitalized in the plugin command. These two have been fixed and appear to be the only ones suffering from the problem. An anonymous thank you to a player who pointed this out to me via email!! :)
Two more achievements have been added not long after the Ch. 2 release ("Honoring the Fallen" and "The Holy Smirk"), these should be all until the Chapter 3 release.

I have been very honored and encouraged by the comments I've received from several players as of late. Everyone seems to be enjoying Chapter 2 thus far and I am so very happy to hear it! As I work on the mapping for Chapter 3, I am still reviewing and asking some of my playtesters for areas of improvement. There is one I would like to mention that's been an unspoken annoyance to some players during their streams...

To try and convey the cadence of speech via text, or add some dramatic timing to it, I often use a "textual pause" in many character dialogue scenes. The length of pauses has been a bit bothersome to various players and I would like to state that I am working on an overhaul to the dialogue in Chapter 1 and 2, seeking to alleviate and shorten it some (going from a 1 sec pause to about .5-.75 sec depending on the scene). Adjusting this will definitely take some time, but it should be a manageable project to tackle while I do mapping for Chapter 3. So if it has been an annoyance for you so far, I apologize and can assure you it will be different in Chapter 3...and hopefully I will have all of Ch 1-2 fixed by that time.

Thank you all for playing and I hope you enjoy the story of Deirdre and her friends as we move forward into her journey! :)
