Terra Invicta takes XCOM and turns it into an Expanse-style grand strategy game

Take XCOM, and imagine a more realistic scenario where humanity had plenty of warning and global politics were less conveniently unified. Add in Newtonian physics and, hey presto, Terra Invicta is (probably) the grand strategy game you've been waiting for.

It's being developed by the creators of XCOM's The Long War mods - Pavonis Interactive - and the team has completely deconstructed XCOM's 'alien invasion' scenario to build a top-down high strategy game where defeating (or embracing) the aliens is a decades-long endeavour. The clandestine organization trope is maintained as the player assumes the role as the head of one of several factions, each with their own agenda, victory conditions, and overall stance on the looming alien presence.

The meat of the game involves competing for influence and control over world governments, with the geopolitics roughly matching the present day. While conventional militaries and assets are present, this isn't a Paradox-style game where you're trying to paint the map your colour. You must work to control these governments from within to gain access to their resources and, more importantly, their space programs.

Long War is one of the best XCOM mods (Long War 2 is also one of the best XCOM 2 mods, while we're on the topic), and the folks behind those projects are now bringing their experience to bear on something original: Terra Invicta. The game's Kickstarter has just concluded, bringing in a total of $216,065 from 4,278 backers.

Terra Invicta hit its modest initial funding goal of $20,000 in its first day, and ended up bringing over ten times that amount in its month-long campaign - just enough to hit all of its stretch goals. The game already has a publisher in the Texas-based Hooded Horse, which will be increasing its own funding for the title as a result of the Kickstarter's success.

As in XCOM, Terra Invicta has you defending earth from an alien invasion, but it expands the scope to that of full grand strategy and 4X games. You manage the campaign across the entire solar system, commanding your assets to do battle on your behalf. There are pausable real-time space battles that you directly control, but don't expect boots-on-the-ground tactical strategy here.

Pavonis Interactive, the same team that made the Long War and Long War 2 mods for both XCOM and XCOM 2 respectively, is developing a grand strategy game called Terra Invicta, which you can back now on Kickstarter.

Chances are that if you had any passing interest in modding Firaxis's excellent turn-based strategy games, you'll have heard of Long War. They're widely celebrated mods because they both meaningfully expand on what makes both XCOM and XCOM 2 so intense to play, while also giving you new gameplay mechanics and toys to blast away the alien scum.

Terra Invicta is described in the Kickstarter post as "a grand strategy alien invasion game". Nothing wrong with sticking to what you know works, and it seems that you'll be taking on the role of one of several human factions looking to dismantle the aliens' invasion plans in the title. Since none of the factions can agree on the best strategy to rid Earth's colonies of the alien incursion, each of the available factions have their own agenda and goals.
