Federation Dossier: Special Operations Group (S.O.G.)

Being called on by the Hero of Planet P, is a tall order, and we know troopers are excited to jump in and prove their skills to General Rico. The Federation wants to shed some more light on the program to prepare troopers on what to expect if they choose to partake in the Special Operations Group.

Our Special Operations Group serves as the solo play tutorial in Starship Troopers: Extermination. This solo play tutorial will make up a multi-chapter journey, with its first chapter “Answering the Call” releasing on October 11. While even the most experienced troopers can join the program, it is mainly designed for beginners, introducing our game mechanics, bugs, missions, and the expansive Starship Troopers Universe in an approachable and engaging way.

In this solo play tutorial, players will answer the call from General Rico himself to join the ranks of the S.O.G. Throughout the 25 missions included in the first chapter, new recruits will follow the general’s instructions across various mission levels, all set underground, including tunnels, and caves, facing against an Arachnid hive for the first time.
Learning the Ropes
Since the Early Access launch, we received a lot of feedback from players, which has been instrumental in shaping up the game to make it more fun and accessible. The solo play tutorial is a great example of this evolution. We received several common questions from new players, such as “How do I build a base?”, “How did this Bug kill me?”, and “What is this Ore thing?”, all of which are answered within our solo play tutorial.
Meet The NPC Comrades
The fight against the Bug can only be won together with your team; this is something you will learn early on in your journey. General Rico wants you to work as a team to accomplish the missions. That’s why in his S.O.G., you are not alone; Moose, Scorch, and Jensen are your trusted NPCs in the solo play tutorial.

New troopers will be able to learn the basics of customizing not just your own loadout but your NPC’s loadout as well with the best setup for the mission. This mode will also allow troopers to familiarize themselves with their weaponry, utility and perks in a more controlled environment. Remember our mission: everyone fights, no one quits!
A Trooper Handpicked for the S.O.G.
We want our troopers to make use of their time as part of the S.O.G. and to make the transition to our multiplayer and Galactic Front more smoothly. When our newly enlisted Troopers try multiplayer mode, they can join arms alongside fellow troopers with a solid understanding of the different Bug types, the fundamentals of base building, and the various mission objectives they will encounter.

Chapter 1 of the solo mode, “Answering the Call,” is just the start of your successful and, hopefully, long career in the S.O.G.; more chapters and content are planned for future updates. We will share more when we’re ready.

Are you an experienced trooper who has mastered the basics? As a veteran, you might find S.O.G operations a bit of a breeze, but General Rico will tell you “You don’t want to be in a fight, but if you are, you fight to win.” S.O.G. delves deeper into the narrative and lore of Starship Troopers: Extermination, enriching the experience for veterans and newbies alike.

If you haven’t yet, you can learn more about your fellow troopers who will be accompanying you in Rico’s Special Operation Group by checking out the Declassified S.O.G. dossiers here:

We hope this developer blog answered some of the questions about what both new and veteran players can expect with our solo play tutorial S.O.G game mode. We wish you the best of luck under the command of General Rico, and we’re sure you’ll do the Federation proud.

Federation Dossier: Planet Boreas

After exploring space with Planet X-11, the art team on Starship Troopers: Extermination settled their interest in exploring Bug Territory: what would a planet fully infested, with no Federation presence, look like? Add a sprinkle of ice and frozen methane, and you have Boreas. Early on in development, the level design team settled on exploring a frozen, Bug-ridden world with a canyon running in-between plateaus, with caves populating them. We were keen on pushing the verticality of this level, which would visually also help us sell the shattered look of the planet.

The Bug Meteor feature above exists as a reference to the first 1997 Starship Troopers movie: Boreas was a toxic, frozen wasteland before it was hit with the Bug Meteor, allowing the Bug Menace to evolve in this extreme environment prior to our troops making it to the ground. The oozing Bug gore would offer a nice material contrast between the deep greenish-blue ice and the sparkling snow.

This feature helps provide players with a clue as to why Frozen Drones and Frozen Warriors appear in Boreas, as well as helping the team create more visually exciting and complex vistas to complement gameplay areas. The Meteor would also serve as a landmark for players to visually orient themselves between the two navigable plateaus (on one side you can see the Meteor and on the other side, you can see additional planets on the vista, hinting at the star system Boreas is a part of).

Once we had a direction of the look and feel for this new map, our level designers started to block out the main areas of the level and the art team set out to develop the tech to achieve this new look. It was very important to us to make this level feel different from existing frozen worlds, which usually have blue, realistic ice and white snow. Below is where we started:

However, that did not visually communicate to the player the toxic nature of the ice, instead it just looked like Alaska. So we introduced deeper greens and cyans onto the mix, which got us closer to the concept target:

As we started to block in and playtest the level, it became clear that we were missing the feeling of coldness in this environment. We wanted to balance out the temperature contrast between inside caves and outside: the former should feel warmer than the latter. After a new lighting pass, the improvement is clear:

Troopers can see below the development of different areas of Boreas from the early level design block out to the final stage:

To help troopers grasp the scale of the new planet Boreas, we’ve scouted out two vantage points troopers can discover of the frosty plateau and the vast canyon.

We at Offworld are proud to showcase the Bug-infested, icy wasteland of Boreas! We hope you have a chill time there and enjoy these previews of what is to come with Starship Troopers: Extermination.

S.O.G Dossiers: Olivia “Jensen” Jensen

Welcome to the elite ranks of the Special Operations Unit. General Rico has chosen you for this mission, recognizing your skill and dedication. Only the top soldiers make it here, and now, you stand among them.

The Federation has released these critical dossiers to help familiarize yourself with the team you’ll be working with. Each member has been selected for their unmatched expertise.

Trust and teamwork will be your greatest assets, and who better to place your trust in than with the S.O.G. Medic.

Olivia Jensen was born into a family of scientists on the planet Arkiallia, a thriving hub of research and innovation within the Federation. From a young age, she displayed a remarkable aptitude for scientific inquiry, often spending hours in her parents' laboratory tinkering with gadgets and conducting experiments.

Her idyllic childhood, however, was shattered when Arkiallia came under a devastating Bug attack while she was away undergoing intensive training at the Federation Fleet Academy. The assault not only claimed the lives of her family and destroyed her home but also left Jensen with a profound sense of loss and survivor's guilt. The traumatic event became a turning point in her life, propelling her to dedicate herself fully to the fight against the Bug menace.

Driven by a desire to blend her scientific knowledge with practical combat experience, Jensen made the bold decision to transfer to the Mobile Infantry. Her goal was twofold: to contribute directly to the frontline efforts against the Bugs and to bring a rigorous scientific approach to the battlefield. Her colleagues initially viewed her transfer skeptically, unsure of how an egghead would fare in the midst of brutal warfare.

Despite initial doubts, Jensen quickly proved her worth. Her analytical mind and innovative thinking turned out to be invaluable assets during numerous missions, where she consistently found ways to exploit Bug weaknesses and devise new strategies for combat. Her ability to see every Bug encounter as an opportunity for scientific discovery earned her respect among her peers, even if her cautious demeanor and nervous energy occasionally set her apart from more gung-ho troopers.

In the field, Jensen is known for her meticulous planning and methodical approach to problem-solving. She is constantly experimenting with new technologies and tactics, seeking to push the boundaries of what is known about Bug physiology and behavior. Her ultimate ambition is not only to defeat the Bugs but also to unravel their mysteries and advance human understanding of extraterrestrial life forms. Off-duty, Jensen can often be found in makeshift laboratories within Mobile Infantry bases, surrounded by data pads and prototype devices. Despite her intense focus on her work, she remains haunted by memories of Arkiallia and the loved ones she lost, driving her relentless pursuit of scientific progress and the hope of preventing similar tragedies in the future.

S.O.G Dossiers: Taral “Scorch” Ashcroft

The Special Operations Group is the best of the best, and that is why you were chosen by General Rico to be part of the elite spec ops group. The Federation has designatedthese dossiers to be declassified to any trooper General Rico deems suitable for his assignment.

The Federation demands perfection and with this mission, we cannot afford any mistakes with your lives on the line.

Take time to get to know your backup out in the field. Meet your S.O.G. Ranger, trooper.

Scorch, whose real name is Taral Ashcroft, was born into a military family on Mars. Raised in an environment where discipline and tactical prowess were valued above all else, she learned from an early age that competence and strict adherence to regulations were non-negotiable.

Her childhood, however, was marked by a traumatic incident that shaped her aversion to fire. At the age of seven, while playing with matches in the barracks where her family was stationed, she accidentally caused a fire to break out. Taral managed to escape, but the blaze claimed the lives of several soldiers, including close friends of her parents. Since that day, the mere sight or thought of flames has triggered intense anxiety and visceral memories, leading her to avoid any situation involving fire whenever possible.

Despite this fear, Tara was determined to follow in her family's footsteps and joined the Federation’s vaulted Mobile Infantry as soon as she came of age. While her superiors took note of her unwavering commitment to duty and her sharp intellect, she soon earned the nickname "Scorch" among her peers due to her uncharacteristic jumpiness around incendiary weapons, a name she embraced with mixed feelings.

During her training, Scorch excelled in nearly every aspect of combat, mastering a wide array of weapons and tactics. However, she encountered a significant obstacle when it came to the flamethrower, a weapon that triggered her deepest anxieties. Despite repeated attempts to overcome her fear, she could not bring herself to complete the certification, a rare failure that stung her pride and reinforced her determination to prove herself in other ways.

Now a seasoned officer in the Mobile Infantry, Scorch serves as a relentless perfectionist, always striving to outperform her peers and uphold the strict standards she imposes on herself. Her meticulous planning and tactical acumen have earned her respect, even as her aloof demeanor and occasional sharp retorts alienate some members of her unit. Behind her facade of confidence and control, however, lies a deeply guarded vulnerability—a fear of fire that she has yet to fully confront.
