Devlog: Vocations
Hello everyone!
It’s time for our first monthly devlog since the core team started working full-time on the game. I am very excited to share with all of you how the vocations and character progression will work for the launch of the game.
When you first create your character in Ethyrial, you will be given a choice between 6 starting vocations. Do not be fooled, however. These vocations are “basic” versions of a class which you will ascend into more powerful vocations in the game, offering rich variety and dynamic within your playstyle and progression.
Each of these vocations grants your character a basic start of spells/abilities befitting of the playstyle of that vocation, and this is basically where you decide if you’re going to be a dps, tank, or support. Some of the vocations that you evolve to within the basic ones act as hybrids. For example, despite Mystic being the “Healer” spec, Wardens are a melee dps and healer/support hybrid.
The full list of available vocations at start are as follows:
Fighter (Melee DPS) - 5 Ascensions
Protector (Tank) - 4 Ascensions
Archer (Ranged DPS) - 2 Ascensions
Rogue (Melee DPS) - 2 Ascensions
Arcanist (Ranged DPS) - 3 Ascensions
Mystic (Healer / Support) - 5 Ascensions
We’re running a poll in our Discord to see which vocation you’d like to learn about more in depth, as well as their ascensions, so make sure you join and let us know!
So, that’s an overview of the early-game basic vocations. The choices for your character's progression do not stop there! Within Ethyrial, items, professions, quests, and talents will play a large role in your character’s playstyle. Items, professions, and quests can provide unique spells and abilities, and effects. Whereas talents can significantly change how certain spells work and interact with the world.
Let’s take a look at the Crusader’s Reckoning of Ethersalos spell, and the Divine Reckoning talent:

As you can see, the Divine Reckoning talent is just a bonus to the spell, but how would you go about acquiring talents in Ethyrial? Through quests and important choices. We want players to develop their characters as they play the game, and we also want items/gear to play a crucial role in their development as well. What we hope to achieve with this is that even though there are other Crusaders on your server, you may be the only Crusader with a certain unique twist on your vocation.
Additionally, it does not stop once you’re a Crusader. There are hidden paths and progressions within the game that might lead to new vocations and spells down the line as you develop your character. We don’t want to reveal too many of these, as we want these to be player discoveries, but they are typically reserved to high-level dedicated players who truly seek to master a certain path within their vocation. An example of this would be the “Paladin of Ethersalos” vocation. Yes, that’s a vocation name!
With so many unique vocations, paths, and alternate progressional routes through quests, items, and talents, we feel that the vocations in Ethyrial are going to help provide a rich level of identity in each players’ character, and make you truly feel like you have the power to create a character befitting your playstyle through your own choices.
That’s all for this month’s devlog. We’re excited to share some more goodies with you next month, and I wish you all the best as always. Peace!
