Dev Diary #1 - Welcome to Battlesector

Within the Imperium of Man are a million worlds. Countless souls live, fight, and die for the Emperor. There is no hope, for hope breeds despair. There can be no doubt, for doubt begets fear. There is no salvation, but that granted by the Emperor. The only righteous path is the destruction of His enemies. In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war.

Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector is finally out, and we couldn’t be more excited.

When the opportunity to make a strategy game set in the epic Warhammer 40,000 universe was presented to us, we didn’t hesitate to get on board.

At Black Lab Games, we’ve specialised in making “action turn-based” strategy games. By that, I mean games that you win using cunning and outsmarting your opponent - not by faster reflexes - combined with action-packed presentation.

Having the chance to apply what we do to the Warhammer 40,000 setting has been an amazing experience. We’ve worked hard to create the most authentic experience of war in the grimdark future of the 41st Millennium we can. We hope that comes through when you play the game.

We couldn’t be prouder of the version of Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector you can play today. As with any game, it’s evolved a lot over the course of development. Some features didn’t work out and were cut or rewritten a number of times, whilst others we didn’t even think of until during development ended up changing the game for the better.

However, this isn’t the end of the journey for us working on this game - it’s just the beginning. Warhammer 40,000 is a vast universe, and right now, Battlesector is just scratching the surface. We’ve built a solid foundation and set of gameplay systems for really great battles, but there is a lot of room for expansion. We definitely have plans to extend the game in the coming years, and we hope you’ll join us for the ride.

In order to show you what our plans for the first year of development are, we've just published a roadmap image.

We’d like to thank Games Workshop for trusting us to play in their universe. The Warhammer tabletop game and the Warhammer 40,000 setting is such an influential game in strategy/wargaming circles, so we are truly humbled to be able to contribute to the video game side of the franchise.

We’d also like to thank the team at Slitherine. This is our third game working together, and none of this would have been possible without their faith in us, and their unwavering support over the past 7 years working together.

Finally, we’d like to publicly thank the beta testers that helped us with playtesting and feedback over the past few months. We really appreciate the time, effort and dedication you’ve put into providing the development team with your feedback and suggestions.

For the Emperor and Sanguinius!
- The Black Lab Games Team

About the game:

Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector is a fast-paced turn-based strategy game set in the grimdark universe of the 41st Millenium. Pick your force, develop your army, field mighty heroes and fight for victory using superior strategy, awesome abilities, and devastating weaponry.

Age of Crimson Dawn

Experience an epic twenty mission single-player campaign that explores the aftermath of the Devastation of Baal. Help Sergeant Carleon and his allies purge the Tyranid infestation on Baal Secundus, and preserve the honour of the noble Blood Angels.

Skirmish Mode

Fight across the surface of Baal on maps of your choosing and select either the Blood Angels or the Tyranids in the Skirmish mode. Completely customize your army list by picking your units, heroes and their loadouts.

Forge Your Armies

Command iconic units like the Sanguinary Priest, the Librarian Dreadnought, and the Hive Tyrant to annihilate your foes. Use over 60 abilities and 50 weapons to orchestrate your opponent’s bloody demise.

Build Momentum

Each faction has a unique Momentum system that can result in a Surged unit. Units that Surge are able to string together superhuman chains of actions, or use the opportunity to further upgrade their abilities.

Call In Air Support

Use Command Points to call in faction-specific air support abilities. The Blood Angels Stormraven can obliterate xenos with a missile barrage, or deep strike a unit of veteran Assault Marines behind enemy lines. Meanwhile, the Tyranid Harpy can devastate the enemy defenses with its Sonic Screech, or scatter the battlefield with its deadly Spore Mines.

Face Your Friends On The Battlefield

With live and asynchronous multiplayer, and hotseat modes available, there’s no excuse not to take your friends to war. Asynchronous multiplayer will be only available on PC.

Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector review

Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector is turn-based and about space marines, which means it'll rile up those who want more 40K games to be real-time and action-packed, as well as those who are sick of every 40K game being about space marines. Thing is, the last 18 months have given us games about the setting's bounty hunters, giant robots, punk gangs, fighter planes, and fighter planes but with orks. Thank Games Workshop's free-and-easy licensing for the variety, which is why I'm fine with Battlesector reprising one of the more classic themes...

Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector review - faith and (muted) fury

There are two things to know about Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector. First, it's an excellent vehicle to live your Space Marine power fantasies, especially if you're a fan of the new Primaris units. It's also not the most exciting turn-based strategy game you'll ever play. But it does possess a very solid foundation that could lead to a glorious future.

Battlesector, from the developers that brought you Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, follows in the footsteps of a similar game that was also published by Slitherine (although made by a different developer) - Warhammer 40,000: Sanctus Reach. While the two games focus on different parts of the grimdark setting, both share a core vision in that they offer an excellent distillation of the tabletop game in digital form.

If you're looking for a way to experience Warhammer 40,000 without shelling out the money, this is one of the best games on the market that gives you a 'close enough' experience. Battlesector sits at a nexus of 'old' and 'new' 40k, with a story that sees the Blood Angels trying to rebuild after a Tyranid invasion almost wipes their homeworld off the galactic map. Only intervention from the Indomitus Crusade and Roboute Guilliman staved off total annihilation, and with the Ultramarine legend came the shiny new Primaris Space Marines.
