Old School RuneScape News

It's almost impossible to put OSRS' 'Old School' feeling into words, so I gave its devs a crack at it

Old School Runescape has expanded in ways a younger, more sprightly version of me could never have imagined. We've now reached the point that Gielinor has ostensibly revealed all its overworld has to offer, its Varlamore update clearing away the last of the black squares of nothingness that punctuated its world map. Yet, despite the swathes of new monsters, quests, and even entire continents that have arrived since the Old School version of Runescape 2 launched over a decade ago now, the game has never once felt like it's strayed from that special something that made it so magical for me growing up.

Sailing Technical Pre-Release

In case you've been living under a particularly large rock recently, Old School's first-ever new skill, Sailing, launches on November 19th at 10:00 UTC!

Before launch day arrives, we’re battening down the hatches and making sure everything’s shipshape behind the scenes. This week’s update marks the Sailing Technical Pre-Release - where we’re hoisting most of the Sailing content into the game, but it’ll remain locked and unplayable until launch.

This pre-release is a crucial step in preparing for one of the biggest updates Old School has ever seen. With so many new systems, assets, and code changes introduced by Sailing, we need to ensure everything integrates cleanly with the live game environment. This allows us to monitor how the game performs under real conditions, identify any last-minute issues, and keep everything stable ahead of launch day.

So while you’ll start seeing some new faces, icons, and quest names around Gielinor and the wider internet, you won’t be able to train the skill or set sail just yet - think of it as loading the ship before departure. Feel free to let us know which things you spot that you're most excited for. We can't wait to see your posts about all the new additions coming to the game soon!

As this is one of the largest technical updates we’ve ever deployed, we recommend steering clear of high-risk activities (like Hardcore Ironman antics or dangerous PvM) right after the update, just while we monitor for any unexpected issues.

Here’s what you might notice in-game:
  • Sailing NPCs or interfaces: Interacting with some of these will inform you that Sailing is available from November 19th.
  • Quest, Music, and Max Capes are unaffected; you’ll still be able to wear them until Sailing's full release.
  • Sailing quests (like Pandemonium and Current Affairs) appear in your quest list, but are greyed out and marked as 'coming soon'.
  • The Sailing skill guide and quest journals are visible, but only show that the content will unlock on November 19th.
  • Sailing XP cannot be earned or granted by any means. So no sneaking in any XP lamps or Tears of Guthix!
  • Sea creatures, boats, and shipwrights can be seen but not used - attempting to interact will simply give you some flavour dialogue.
  • Sailing-related Slayer tasks, collection log entries, and music tracks will be visible, but remain locked until launch.
  • Fish chunks from aerial fishing being converted to "Fish offcuts" (the same ones you get from Barbarian fishing).
    • Please note, they still behave exactly the same.

Essentially, everything is in place, but the ship’s still moored for final checks!

A few things to note:
  • You may notice a few items (like steel chains) appearing in the Smithing skill guide. These currently have limited use, but will be used for future Sailing content - so don’t worry if you spot them a tad early!
  • Certain Sailing-related items may also be visible in-game, but not yet craftable - this is entirely intentional, so don't worry.
The Shores Ahead
  • Today: Sailing Technical Pre-Release update (Sailing content added but locked).
  • From today until November 18th: Technical monitoring and stability checks.
  • November 19th (10:00 UTC): Sailing launches for all players!
    • 7:15am UTC - System update timer goes live.
    • 8:00am UTC - Game worlds go offline briefly for the update.
    • 8:00 - 8:15am UTC - Worlds come back online, players can log in as normal, but won’t be able to start Sailing yet.
    • 8:15am - 10:00am UTC - We'll be running some final checks on the live worlds. Players can continue playing on them, but Sailing will remain locked until our checks are complete.
    • 10:00am UTC - Depending on those checks, we'll unlock Sailing for all members without rebooting the worlds, so you'll be able to start your new adventure directly!

Please note that once game worlds come back online, the update will have been deployed, despite not being accessible to players yet. As a result of this, the max cape and its perks will no longer be usable, and everyone will officially have Level 1 Sailing, which will be reflected on the HiScores right away (upon logout). You won't be able to start the Pandemonium quest that unlocks the skill until Sailing we make Sailing accessible, hopefully around 10.00am UTC.

We'll keep you updated via our usual channels to see whether any of your existing if we need extra time for our final checks.

If you’re already feeling the sea breeze and want to get ahead of the waves, check out our blog 'How to Prepare for Sailing', where we cover everything you’ll need to set sail like a pro on launch day!

Z-buffer Graphical Fixes

Last week, we rolled out a major visual upgrade to Old School’s rendering system, introducing true 3D depth calculations (known as Z-buffering). In simple terms, this means surfaces now display in the correct order, making the world feel a little more grounded - literally!

Of course, when you overhaul something as fundamental as how the game sees depth, a few things are bound to need a little tinkering aftercare here and there. You might’ve noticed the odd flickering floor, floating object, or shadow behaving badly. While the majority of these issues haven't been game-breaking, we know they can be quite distracting, and we want you to know the team’s been working hard to clean things up as fast as they can.

You’ll see additional visual improvements rolling out gradually over the coming days and weeks as we continue to monitor your feedback and polish the new depth system. Some of these fixes may arrive between our regular Wednesday game updates, as they’re deployed through ongoing engine and client updates - so don’t worry if things subtly improve without a formal patch note!

Here’s what we’ve addressed in this week's update:
  • Fixed an issue where the entrance tunnels to the Piscatoris Fishing Colony were invisible.
  • The trapdoor in While Guthix Sleeps is now visible, and the flickering dungeon floor has been fixed.
  • Shadows now appear correctly for Verzik, her pet, and all her projectiles.
  • The stairs to the Treasure Room in the Theatre of Blood now display correctly after defeating Verzik.
  • The rug in the Darkness of Hallowvale quest is now visible once more.
  • Fixed an issue where ground attack effects in the Huey encounter were flickering or not displaying properly.
  • Fixed visual issues during Perilous Moons, where Blood Moon pools and Eclipse Moon highlights appeared incorrectly.

You can keep track of known issues and updates in the official OSRS Discord’s #zbuffer-known-issues channel. If you spot anything unexpected, please let us know via the usual channels. Your feedback’s been hugely helpful in tracking these down so far, so please keep the reports coming!

New Renderer Beta Pause | October 29th

PSA: With the introduction of Z-buffered rendering on the Official Clients today, you may notice some graphical bugs such as missing model details, flickering visuals, or interactive objects that are hidden but still clickable. We'll be actively monitoring these throughout the week to resolve asap. Some issues may require a game reboot (Coldfix), and we will prioritise addressing any major bugs. In the meantime, we recommend Hardcore players take caution with any dangerous activities. Thanks for your patience.

A Quieter Update

You may have noticed things are a little quieter than usual this week, and that’s no accident! The team is full steam ahead, preparing for one of Old School’s biggest milestones yet: the launch of Sailing on November 19th. If you missed the announcement, you can catch all the details in our Sailing launch blog here.

In the run-up to launch, you can expect a few lighter weeks on the content front while we focus on polishing every plank and sail for Old School’s very first new skill. That doesn’t mean things have gone quiet behind the scenes though - far from it!

This week, we’ve been hard at work taking the New Renderer Beta offline to integrate your feedback, as well as fine-tuning the new Poll System that launched last week. Both are big steps toward improving the long-term player experience, and they’ll set the stage nicely for everything that comes after Sailing’s maiden voyage.

Preparing for the Future: New Renderer Beta Pause

As of today, the New Renderer Beta has been temporarily taken offline while we put your incredible feedback into action and focus on a major round of improvements behind the scenes.

This pause lets us make large-scale changes safely, without risking stability during the busy run-up to Sailing’s launch and the end of the year.

Development is continuing full steam ahead, and we’re using this opportunity to refine key areas before bringing the Beta back:
  • Client stability - particularly across mobile devices.
  • Performance consistency - so all devices see the improvements we’re aiming for.
  • Character rendering - to ensure your hard-earned gear and Skill Capes look as sharp as they should.

You may also notice a "Force disable new renderer?" option on the login screen for a short while - this is intentional, and it’ll be removed in a future client update once testing is complete.

We’re still on track to bring the New Renderer Beta back stronger than ever in the new year.

Thank you once again for testing, reporting, and supporting us as we chart the next generation of Old School visuals - we're keeping the same style you know and love, just with a bit of polish!

Z-Buffered Rendering Arrives on Official Clients

Alongside the Renderer Beta Pause, we’ve rolled out z-buffered rendering across all Official Clients - a major technical milestone that modernises how Old School handles 3D depth.

Originally written to run in a Java applet on low-spec computers back in 2004, Old School’s renderer had to cut a few corners when it came to depth-sorting - the process of deciding which surfaces appear in front of others. Those shortcuts sometimes caused small bits of visual 'jankiness', like objects clipping or flickering against the ground.

With z-buffering enabled, the game now performs true 3D depth calculations, meaning surfaces render in the correct order. You shouldn’t notice much difference moment to moment, but this change fixes long-standing visual quirks and lays the groundwork for future improvements, including Sailing and the eventual HD rollout on the Official Client.

We've gone to great lengths to make this update as seamless as possible, but changing how the game handles depth is a big shift. With changes this large, some jankiness is to be expected. You may notice some graphical bugs in certain areas - such as missing model details, flickering visuals, or interactive objects that are hidden but still clickable... We'll be actively monitoring these throughout the week and working hard to resolve as soon as we can. So please let us know any issues you encounter through the in-game bug report feature and our socials! Some issues may require a game reboot (Coldfix) to resolve, and we will prioritise addressing any major, game-breaking bugs as needed. In the meantime, we recommend Hardcore players take caution with any dangerous activities.

We’ll be monitoring feedback closely, so if you see anything unusual, please let us know!

Poll System Road Test

Our brand-new Poll System has now been live for nearly a week, and we’ve already seen almost 68,000 members take part in the Road Test poll!

This initial poll was designed purely to test the new system in a live environment, making sure everything runs well before we use it for real game-impacting questions.

A huge thank you to everyone who’s taken the time to vote so far. Your participation helps us ensure future polls are accurate, reliable, and ready to shape the future of Old School.

We’ll be opening our first true gameplay polls soon, so stay tuned!

Merch Update - New OSRS Logo Pins!

If you can't see the image above, click here!

New OSRS logo pins from Angels Scapes – these have been much requested so now you can grab not one but 2 pins to celebrate your favourite game! There is a smaller version you can wear and a supersized version that is double the size and comes with a matt black and gold foil presentation box. Perfect for gifting (maybe add it to your Xmas list now!)

If you can't see the image above, click here!

Both feature coloured enamel, jelly enamel, and 2.5D shiny gold and antique nickel double plating.

In stock and ready to ship now from the official merch store.

Also, a reminder for our American Scapers that the US Merch Store is back!

Our merch partner had to temporarily close the store after changes to US customs rules came into effect on August 29th, but we’re pleased to confirm that orders can now be placed again. There are a few changes to be aware of if you’re shopping from the States:
  • U.S. Customs now requires duties to be prepaid, which means these are now automatically calculated on the store and the shipping price quoted at checkout now includes all duties and tariffs owed.
  • All US orders will be sent via DHL tracked. The team are still working with Royal Mail and hopes to bring back a cheaper, non-tracked option in the future.

We know shipping from the UK isn’t ideal. Work is already underway on a proper long-term solution that would see US orders fulfilled from a warehouse closer to home.

To help ease the string of these new duties and shipping changes, we've put together some special bundles and offers on popular items where possible – that includes Pins and Keyrings!

Other Changes
  • Players who've achieved 1 or more Threads of Elidinis from Tombs of Amascut can now repurchase them from Perdu for 350,000 coins.

Next Week: Sailing Technical Pre-Release Update

Sailing will release on November 19th at 10:00 UTC! To make sure everything runs smoothly on launch day, we're slightly adjusting our usual release process with a technical pre-release update two weeks early.

On November 5th, our weekly Game Update will include some of the content for Sailing. This content will stay locked and inaccessible until the official launch and helps us identify and fix any potential issues before Sailing goes live. During this period, our team will be monitoring the content closely and testing it on a staff-only beta world.

While Sailing is inaccessible in this update, the update on November 5th is one of the largest updates we've ever done behind-the-scenes. While we are doing everything we can do make sure it runs smoothly, we would recommend avoiding any dangerous in-game activities right after the update, in case of any unexpected game world instability.
Timeline
• November 5th: Sailing technical pre-release update. Most Sailing content will be added to the game (but won’t be accessible yet).
  • November 5th – 18th: The team will monitor and address any technical issues to ensure everything runs smoothly.
  • November 19th: The game update will launch earlier than usual, but Sailing will remain inaccessible until approximately 10:00am UTC.

Next week, we'll be releasing a more detailed "how to prepare for Sailing" blog, so you can look forward to that!

Old School RuneScape is getting its first new skill since it launched, and so the XP grind begins anew

A thing I find a lot of joy in is the fact that despite there's technically a new, shinier, perhaps by some people's standards better version of it, Old School RuneScape is still kicking around. Before the Old School was tagged on the front end of it, RuneScape was an MMO I put many hours into (and found little success in) as a youth with too much free time, so the fact practically two decades later it's introducing a brand new skill into the game simultaneously impresses me and strikes existential fear into my heart because of how old this game actually is.

Here's how Old School Runescape's Sailing skill came to be, as Jagex's 18-year odyssey finally arrives in port

It's been just over 20 years since I started playing what is now Old School Runescape. A tremendous amount has changed in that time, as Gielinor's borders have expanded, providing entirely new adventures to embark on in one of the best MMOs. For the first time in its history, its world map has been completely filled in, waving farewell to the last of the black boxes that have punctuated it over the years. Although Gielinor's overworld is, for now at least, a known quantity, there's still a vast ocean of blue tiles to explore.
