TzHaar-Ket-Rak's Challenges
TzHaar-Ket-Rak's Challenges
So you think you're tough stuff, eh? Well, you may have defeated three JalTok-Jads, but can you defeat six?

Prove your worth with a set of new PvM scraps to test the very best fighters! These fearsome challenges are set by TzHaar-Ket-Rak, who can be found in eastern Mor Ul Rek, home of the mighty TzHaar. To access this part of Mor Ul Rek, players are required to have completed the Fight Caves.

TzHaar-Ket-Rak waits for you to the east.

The location of TzHaar-Ket-Rak.

For each challenge, the player must face a steadily increasing number of JalTok-Jads, a stronger version of the iconic TzTok-Jad. For the first challenge you'll only face one, which then unlocks the next level - until finally you must defeat six of 'em! Each challenge is on the clock and a nearby scoreboard will show your best times. In order to unlock challenges 3-6, players must have completed the Inferno.

Each time you complete a challenge you'll be rewarded with Tokkul, the TzHaar currency. Completion of all six will unlock a JalTok-Jad transmogrify option for the TzTok-Jad pet (we heard your requests)! Most importantly, you can be comfortable in the knowledge that you are indeed the best of the best...

The Old School Team

This is Old School RuneScape: Getting Started

You've just finished your training and tell the Magic Instructor you're ready to be teleported to mainland Gielinor. You arrive and find yourself in the courtyard of Lumbridge Castle, surrounded by other players, townsfolk and strange creatures. It's time to begin your adventure.

But where do you go from here? The world of Old School RuneScape is a huge, sprawling land, full of adventure and intrigue. Although it can seem daunting, we're here to help you with some helpful tips and trick to get you started.

The great thing about Gielinor is that you can be anything you want, from a wandering adventurer, a master craftsman, a curious wizard and much more...

Here are just a couple of ways you can start your journey:
The Road Ahead
If you've told the Gielinor Guide at the very beginning of Tutorial Island that you are either 'a new player' or 'a player that has played in the past', you can enjoy an encounter with Adventurer Jon. By heading just north of Lumbridge Castle, you'll find this seasoned adventurer standing outside The Sheared Ram pub.

He'll tell you about the Adventure Paths task system, which helps new players find their feet by completing a set of tasks for some nice rewards.

Jon offers two main tasks:

Combat Path - This helps to level all of your main Combat skills including Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged and Magic, and will reward you with items to improve the way you fight!

Gathering Path - This makes the skills that you previously got to work on back at Tutorial Island even stronger.

To find out more about the tasks within each path, or any of the rewards you can get, make sure to visit the official Old School wiki.
Making a Name for Yourself
What better way to rise to fame as Gielinor's greatest hero than by helping those who need it most? You'll find a variety of quests to complete in your quest panel - here are some which will be nearby to help get you going:

Cook's Assistant - The very first quest! Head to the Lumbridge Castle kitchen and speak to the Cook. He needs help baking a cake for the Duke's Birthday, for which you'll receive a nice boost to your Cooking skill.

Sheep Shearer - Level up your Crafting by heading to Fred's Farm north of Lumbridge to help trim the farmer's sheep.

X Marks the Spot - Get an introduction to Clue Scrolls by visiting Veos in The Sheared Ram pub and partake in one of his favourite hobbies, Treasure Hunts!

The Restless Ghost - There's a ghost haunting the graveyard, and Father Aereck in the Lumbridge Church needs your! Get rid of the pesky spirit and boost your Prayer skill in the process!

Rune Mysteries - Dabble in the curious art of Runecrafting by visiting Duke Horacio on the 1st floor of Lumbridge Castle!

For a list of guides, rewards and more visit the OSRS Wiki page on free-to-play quests.
Level Up!
Skilling is an important part of Old School RuneScape. Improving your skills not only grants access to more of the world, but also opens to door to lots of ways to make money! And the best thing is that many of the best ways to earn XP can be found everywhere around you! Here are just a couple of examples of how you can easily start raising those stats and raking in the cash:

Cut trees in Lumbridge

Fish and cook shrimps in Lumbridge Swamp

Killing cows in Lumbridge (and tanning their hides)

Mine and smith ores

Defeat some goblins!

Clans Progress Blog
Introduction
Today we can finally share some key features of the long awaited Clans system! We'll be taking a deep dive into the menus, which you'll use to create a Clan, assign ranks and recruit new members.

There's still a long way to go on Clans - chat isn't fully functional yet, and you can see this blog is full of placeholder GFX - but we hope to launch sometime mid-2021!
Clan Hub
We knew that we needed to certain features for easy Clan building, namely:

 • Gathering and recruiting Clan members
 • Listings of Clans to join
 • A Clan Hall entrance (more on that later)
 • And a detailed explanation of what Clans are

It made sense to gather all of these features in one place, so... introducing: The Clan Hub!

But where should it be? Considering a Clan is by definition 'a group of people', it would make sense to have it where people are already grouping together, right? We think we might have found the perfect spot: the south east corner of the Grand Exchange.

Currently it's the only empty corner – and it certainly has lots of space to fit a Clan Hub! Plus, we know that the Grand Exchange is a nostalgic location that is near and dear to many of you, so we don't want this new Hub seem intrusive. Tucked in the corner, it's near enough that you can easily find folks to recruit, but far enough away that it wont disrupt the every-day broker.

We would love to hear what you think about this location. And if you don’t like it, where would you like to see it?

The proposed location of the Clan Hub in the south east corner, with the games corner in the south west.
Creation
Every Clan has its formation story that's a monumental event in the Clan’s history, so we really want to make it memorable. But you can't have a Clan of one, so you'll need to find at least five players gathered in the Hub (players can always leave after the Clan is formed). You can only create one Clan per day, so plan your Clans carefully.

To register a Clan, you first need to talk to Clerk, a friendly NPC at the Hub. Some people may already have a group of friends they want to create a Clan with, while others will want to form a group on the spot. We offer two methods for inviting people: you can right-click a player in the area to invite them (or apply to their Clan), or you could use the invite button on the Clan creation side panel. Note that this panel is only available in the Hub and only to those who are not in a Clan already (keep reading to find out about inviting people to your existing Clan).

The invite button in action, as well as the extra options to apply or invite players.

Once you have started forming your group, your Clan side panel becomes... the Creation side panel! Here you will find the following buttons:

 • Invite: Press it, then click on a player to recruit them.
 • Clan Name: This does not reserve the name - it only checks whether it's already taken.
 • Confirm: This button checks that you have the required number of people and, if you didn’t select a name already, it will ask you what unique name you’d like for your Clan. Choose wisely because there are limits to how often you can change it afterwards. Once everything is ready, a Clan will be formed with the initial founder as a the Owner. Ranks for members will be set up automatically, but these can be changed at your leisure (more on this later).
 • Cancel: Ends the Clan creation process, if you are the initial founder. Founding members can also access the button, but it will only make them leave the Clan themselves. Cancelling does not count towards your daily limit of forming one Clan - you can interrupt as many Clan formations as you want. Once the Clan has been confirmed will you be unable to form more that day.

The side panel first seen as an initial founder (Owner), then as a founding member.

The Clan name 'Wowee' is available. However, the founder wishes to create the Juggernauts Clan instead.
Ranks & Permissions
Now it's time to start deciding which of your new minions you can trust! At first you'll be the only person with any power, but you might like to grant your Clan buddies permission to kick guests from the chat, recruit new members, or even plan events. For that, you'll need to assign them each a rank.

The Members List lets you see who's currently in your Clan...

... and, as the Owner, you'll have the permission to change their ranks via this menu. So let's imagine we're promoting Sad Auntie to the rank of Colonel:

We'll have the artists draw some real icons to represent each rank before launch! For now, we're just using a little abstract 'art' as a placeholder.

Now, what can Colonel Sad Auntie do with their new authority? That's up to the Clan Owner too, and they control it via the Permissions menu:

In the illustration, you'll see Sad Auntie's new Colonel rank permits them to recruit. However they're not permitted to assign ranks to other players - only a General or above is currently allowed to do that. Nor can they edit the Clan's public profile, since you currently have to be a Deputy Owner to do that.

However, as the Owner, you might not be so picky. Maybe you feel that a mere Colonel, such as Sad Auntie, should be allowed to edit the public profile, even if you'd prefer not to let them hand out ranks. So you can use this Permissions menu to change what rank is required and voila:

Now the Clan's Colonels can edit the public profile too, but not assign ranks.

Sounds like a lot of big decisions huh? Well, at the top of the menu, the 'Permission access' option allows the Owner to control what rank is needed for using this menu itself, meaning that they could actually let their Deputy Owners or even Administrators change this setup for them. This sort of flexibility with permissions could come in handy for bigger groups! The default settings will lock most actions to the Owner, and you can just leave it that way if you don't want to delegate anything.

Some actions will always require at least Administrator rank, for reasons involving the game engine's own safety checks.
Titles
Maybe the military ranks don't suit your Clan's vibe? Maybe you'd prefer your ranks to involve more archaic terms such as Peons and Dogsbodies. Or maybe you'd like to use RuneScape's metal tiers from Bronze to Dragon, or the gem tiers. You could even introduce Senators and Representatives to your fantasy play if that's what you're into!

Clans have 17 rank slots, most of which can be given names via this Rank Hierarchy menu. We won't be letting you rename the Owner, Deputy Owner and Administrator ranks, since they're essential to some game functions. However, you've got a lot of flexibility to set up the remaining hierarchy of ranks using your favourite titles from the menu (note that we won't be able to store completely custom titles that you type yourself).

Each title comes with an icon - they're just placeholder GFX in this blog, remember - and we'll aim to show that icon next to the player in the Clan's chat channel. We'd like to get more titles onto the list if possible, though we expect that players will have hundreds of great title ideas, and there's a limit to how many we can plug in without holding up the project.
Recruiting
We thought it'd be helpful if you could recruit new players into your Clan without having to meet up to use a Vexillum (though you'll still be able to do that if you like), so we’ve added some recruitment menus for authorised clan members.

Suppose a potential applicant is browsing a Clan’s info. They like what they see, and wish to apply...

Clans may also set some basic requirements, such as Combat level and skill total, to ward off newbie applicants (there's no rule saying that pre-existing Clan members must satisfy these requirements, by the way). There's also an anti-spam feature to prevent players from sending lots of frivolous applications.

Our newly promoted Colonel Sad Auntie is authorised to recruit for the Vaccinated Clan, so the Applicants menu lets them do this, along with editing the basic requirements.

Having clicked this, Sad Auntie will be flagged as inviting applications. Now that there's at least one authorised recruiter inviting applications on that game world, eligible applicants may apply. Their application will appear for Sad Auntie and any other authorised recruiter who's reading the same menu, any of whom can accept or decline.

Whenever Sad Auntie has had enough of recruiting for the day, they can choose to 'Stop inviting applications' again. When there are no remaining recruiters inviting applications for this Clan, the remaining list of applicants will be discarded.

Clans can advertise themselves, too. A Recruitment Board can be found in the Clan Hub, and a recruiter who's currently inviting applications for their Clan may list it there:

Players seeking a Clan to join can access Clan info and apply directly from this list, and they’ll only see listings for Clans where they satisfy the requirements. They can also filter the list according to the Clans' registered interests, and sort it by Clans' names, sizes and formation dates.
Omg changes!
Fitting this new system into the existing game isn't easy. For a start, we've had chat-channels called 'Clan chat' for years. You'll still be able to use them alongside the new Clans system, like how they still exist in RS3, but to avoid confusion with the Clans system, we're referring to them as 'chat-channels'", rather than 'Clan chat'.

Along with renaming those channels, we need menu space, so we're proposing to update the chat-channel side-panel (ooh, that rhymes) so that it can be used for both - and maybe future expansions like Group Iron Man too.

Here's the current side panel, showing a channel named 'House Of Fun':

We're proposing to reformat it slightly, so that the space can be used for the same 'House Of Fun' channel, as well as for your own Clan ('Vaccinated') and perhaps another Clan whose channel you've joined as a guest.

The design for these is still open to change. We've gone with tabs to be consistent with various other side-panels, but if you'd like to pitch your own ideas, you'd be most welcome! The chatbox needs a new tab too, though we can fit that in without changing the style at all.
'Engine Work'
We bring you some words from Mod Boko, who's taken over much of the Clans engine work following the departure of Mod Atlas:

Back at RuneFest, Mod Sween originally outlined the "long and difficult road” of tech work for Clans, and that's certainly come to pass! It's been a sizeable undertaking which encompasses so much more than just technical requirements - it's the literal backbone of a community.

A Clan is essentially a group of players with a united purpose. This could be entirely socially focused, they could be frequently looting together or perhaps they're simply seeking to crush another Clan - but the system must reinforce players coming together, and facilitate discourse. Naturally, chat functionality will be identical to how the current 'Clan chat' performs and will be changed to 'Friends chat', mirroring RuneScape.

We must also consider the ongoing management of this ever developing, living entity. We needed to ensure that the infrastructure will allow for frequent changes. Clans can also be a blueprint for any other form of player groups (such as Ironman exclusive groups) which can be handled in the same way in future.

Elaborating on what Mod Boko says, once the game can handle defined groups of players we have the foundation for Group Iron Man, due later in the year! We've also got some rough concepts for how the same infrastructure could be used to pass a bit more player data between game worlds, allowing cross-world minigame group formation systems in future. And, while the initial Clans launch won't come with highscores, the engine work for those must be delivered for Group Iron Man, after which we'll have more scope to come back and apply it to Clans too!

We know the Clans project has been frustratingly slow to arrive (it's safe to say 2020 didn't go as planned for any of us!) but we hope this big investment in building our infrastructure will bring all sorts of benefits for Old School RuneScape for years to come.
Clan Halls
We briefly mentioned Clan Halls at the beginning of this blog and you might be wondering what they are. Well, we're not quite ready to show them yet, but in short they're a private area just for your Clan! They will be accessible through a portal in the Hub, and will contain some interesting features for you to explore. You can open them up to guests or, if you're feeling exclusive, reserve them only for certain ranks in your Clan.

Clan Halls are not like Player Owned Houses. For example, there are currently no plans to let you built things within the Clan Hall, and we won't require you to spend many hours in there to pay an upkeep either. We would rather have you out in the world, doing what you love. Think of the Clan Hall as simply a place where you can kick back and relax with your Clan, show off your fashion-scape, or have a beer at the bar!
Closing Notes
There are of course lots of cool potential features for Clans, and we wish we could add them all! Our initial update will include the best features we can provide with the resources available to us while making sure we have the stable, fundamental groundwork in place. Hopefully we can add some more of the ideas from our 'cool features' list in future updates...

That's everything Clans-related for now. We hope to get this out to you towards the middle of the year, and we cannot wait to see what cool Clan names you come up with! What do you think of it so far? We'd love to hear your feedback so please let us know what you think via our official forums, on the 2007Scape Reddit, or the community-led OSRS Discord in the #gameupdate channel.

The Old School Team

Shooting Stars Poll Blog - UPDATED

We're always tinkering with Old School, not least with our monthly Old School 'Ideation Days' where the J-Mods get busy pitching, designing and even prototyping possible new game content. In December's Gazette we highlighted a few of these pitches, and we explained the process in more detail last March.

The fruits of these endeavours have previously resulted in recreations of RuneScape adventures with a magical Old School feel. Seasoned players may remember our intensive work to recreate the Corporeal Beast (2014) and Grand Exchange (2015). Since then we've received additional support from our internal tools team making it much easier to essentially port game content from RuneScape to Old School. That's what led to Soul Wars!

Alongside Soul Wars, one of our J-Mods also set about trying to re-create Shooting Stars, which originally came to RuneScape back in 2008. Working on both projects side-by-side allowed us to learn as much as possible about backporting game content (especially as Shooting Stars spans most of the game world). Our recreations aren't simply like-for-like ports, though - as with the Soul Wars release, it's our intention to address any criticisms of Shooting Stars and resolve them in a uniquely Old School way. It's this Old School-ified version that we're hoping to poll soon and that journey continues with this blog!

We last spoke about Shooting Stars in September, outlining lots of Old School-friendly tweaks such as removing the daily aspect, rebalancing the rewards, adding more landing sites and throwing in some extra F2P elements too.

The same survey also mentioned the minigames Stealing Creation and Fist of Guthix, but the reason we're offering Shooting Stars now is because we've already got the game content working!

Most of the 6,000ish respondents (around 75.65%, to be exact) said they were interested in learning more, and in a Q&A livestream last week we were asked for an update. Having explained the headline changes we hoped to make, we then ran a short poll in the livestream chat, and the results looked very encouraging at 79% Yes! Coupled with the survey responses, it looks like the time is right to blog and poll Shooting Stars!
Changelog and Feedback (Updated 25/02/21)
What You Said

What We're Doing

Some of you felt the Construction level required to use Telescopes for scouting a fallen Star might be too high for lower level players.

We feel the benefits of the Telescope warrants the Construction level we proposed. We’d advise lower level players use the House Party themed worlds or explore for fallen stars with others!

You were concerned the bonus XP granted for being the first person to find a fallen Star would benefit too much from the changing worlds and the use of scout/alt accounts, allowing players to achieve amplified Mining XP rates.

We’ve removed the bonus XP granted for being the first person to find a fallen Star. You will still be notified if you were the first person to find the Star and your name will be listed on a board in the Observatory if it was one of the last five Stars.

Many of you felt the Star Sprite design didn’t fit appearing throughout Gielinor in Old School, and that you’d prefer an alternative method of handing in the Stardust.

We’ll remove the Star Sprite from inside fallen Stars. Players will be able to spend their Stardust via Dusuri instead, a Dwarf located in Falador just outside the Mining Guild.

You wanted to know how the Gold Prospector Kit will look in-game.

We’ve included imagery within the blog to show the Prospector Kit would look after being upgraded with Star Fragments. You can see the design here.

You felt like the Celestial Ring should not be a ring as it would prevent players from using the Elven Signet.

We’ve added a poll question that offers the ability for players to combine a Celestial Ring with an Elven Signet. This will require 70 Crafting and Smithing, 100 Crystal Shards and 1000 Stardust. An NPC will do it for players without the requirement for an extra 50 Crystal Shards. This process is will not be reversible.

Some players felt like the increased experience gained from the Celestial Ring would impact current Mining training metas too much and would rather the extra ore not provide additional XP.

When the blog was released, it wasn’t clear if the rewards were tradeable. All rewards from Shooting Stars are untradeable, including Stardust, which is needed to charge the ring. We feel the additional time taken to obtain the dust will offset the additional Mining experience gained as to not impact current metas.

You’d like to know how much Mining experience per hour you should expect to receive.

We expect most players to get no more than 30k Mining experience per hour on average from fallen Stars. It's important to note that this is an average so some hours will give more and others less due to differing star sizes.

Some players were concerned over falling Stars landing within the Wilderness, and would rather these locations be removed from the possible landing sites.

As there is no extra reward granted from venturing into the Wilderness for a fallen Star, the need to go there is entirely optional. We would advise players not wanting to visit these locations to explore another world where the Star will likely be in a safer location throughout Gielinor.

Some players feel like the Essence Packs are worthless and should be replaced with something more valuable.

We’ve seen a lot of support for Essence Packs being introduced, especially from accounts that focus entirely on Skilling. As such, we’ll be leaving them in as a potential reward from Shooting Stars. There are plenty of other rewards to choose from!

You wanted to know if it will be possible to obtain the Mining pet whilst mining a fallen Star.

It will be possible to obtain the Mining pet from fallen Stars.

You wanted to know what happens if a fallen Star has been fully mined.

A fallen Star that has been fully mined will be removed. It can take some time to fully mine a Star though!

You wanted to know if each world has a unique fallen Star spawn, or if all worlds shared the same location.

Fallen Stars will appear in a different place on each world.

You wanted to know when the timer for a new fallen Star starts - is it after one lands or when the Star has been fully mined?

The countdown to the next fallen Star starts as soon as the last one landed.

You wanted to know if the Essence, Clay and Gem related rewards would be available to Ironmen.

Ironmen will be able to purchase all rewards from the Stardust store.

You wanted to know if the +4 Mining boost from the Celestial Ring will apply when the ring is uncharged, and if that same boost would stack with other similar boosts (like that of the Mining Guild).

The Celestial Ring will provide a +4 boost to Mining even when uncharged and the boost will stack with other similar boosts. This also applies to the Superior Mining Gloves.

Shooting Stars

So, here's the concept in a nutshell: Shooting Stars fall on Gielinor and players are able to mine them for XP and rewards. Players use telescopes to figure out when and where they might land.

On every world, a Shooting Star will fall at a random spot selected from a predetermined list roughly every two hours (with a variation of up to 15 minutes to stop them being too predictable).
A Star (Hunter) Is Born
A lot of you will find Stars by just happening upon them on your travels. However, dedicated hunters can use the telescope in their Player Owned House to determine the rough landing location of the next one. Different telescopes will offer varying levels of accuracy.

Sounds easy? Actually, your telescopes will only point to the general region where a Star will fall, so you still need to find the exact spot.
F2P Stars
Shooting Stars was originally for RuneScape members only, but in Old School they will land on F2P worlds too. However, without access to a telescope, players will have to find Stars by chance. Additionally, Stars may still land in non-F2P areas on F2P worlds, rendering them out of reach.

Stars will offer 50% of the usual value (including the bonus for finding them) on F2P worlds, and as the Reward Shop is not available, XP will be the only benefit. However, Stardust (see next section) will still be given on F2P worlds. It's a good idea to save it up ready to be used should you ever decide to become a member!
Mining Stars
Once a Star has landed, it is ready to be mined.

The bonus Mining XP for mining a Star in the original RuneScape was x75 - for balancing reasons we've lowered this for Old School.

The landing times of the last five Stars will also be listed on a board in the Observatory, along with the names of the players that found them.

Fallen Stars come in nine different sizes, and a Star can be any size when it lands. Each has a different Mining Level requirement calculated at the size x10.

Mining any Star will reward players with Stardust, an untradeable currency that can be used to purchase a variety of untradeable rewards. Each size can be mined for a different amount, and once depleted it will shrink to a smaller size. Every time some Stardust is mined, Mining XP is awarded.

Poll Question #1

Should we add the Shooting Stars skilling activity, as described in the dev blog?

Rewards
In addition to all the lovely Mining XP, players can also use their Stardust to buy rewards! Dusuri, a Dwarf found in Falador just outside the Mining Guild will happily take your Stardust in exchange for items. He appears on both P2P and F2P worlds.

In RuneScape's original release, the reward system was very different. Players could only have up to 200 Stardust at once and could only trade it once per day. Our players aren't so keen on mechanics that make tasks feel like a daily chore, so the limit on Stardust has been removed and the old rewards have been replaced with a Reward Shop.

Items you can buy from the Shop are untradeable and include:

Celestial Ring

This ring will give a hidden Mining boost of +4 when worn. This stacks with other invisible boosts. It will also be chargeable with Stardust. Each Stardust will add one charge up to a max of 10,000 charges. When charged, the ring will have a 1/10 chance of giving an extra ore when mining, and this extra ore will reward the normal XP amount when mined. Extra ore can emerge at any rock where the Mining Skillcape has a chance of giving it. Every time ore is mined from a suitable rock, a charge will be lost from the ring.

Poll Question #2

If Shooting Stars is added, should we add the Celestial Ring as a reward which offers a hidden Mining boost?

Poll Question #3

If the Celestial Ring is added as a reward, should it be possible to charge the ring with Stardust, offering a 1/10 chance at obtaining extra ore when mining? Each Stardust will add one charge up to a max of 10,000 charges. Every time ore is mined from a suitable rock, a charge will be lost from the ring.

Poll Question #4

If the Celestial Ring is added as a reward, should it be possible to combine it with an Elven Signet, granting players the effects of both? This will require 70 Crafting and Smithing, 100 Crystal Shards and 1000 Stardust. An NPC will combine the rings for players without the requirement for an extra 50 Crystal Shards. This process is will not be reversible and the combined ring would be untradeable.

Star Fragment

These can be used on any piece of the Prospector Outfit to recolour it gold.

Poll Question #5

If Shooting Stars is added, should we add the Star Fragment as a reward which will allow you to recolour your Prospector Outfit?

Bag Full of Gems

These will work the same as any other Bag Full of Gems.

Poll Question #6

If Shooting Stars is added, should we add the Bag Full of Gems as a reward? These will work as any other Bag Full of Gems.

Soft Clay Pack

These will work the same as any other Soft Clay Pack.

Poll Question #7

If Shooting Stars is added, should we add the Soft Clay Pack as a reward? This will work like any other Soft Clay Pack.

Essence Pack

These are new items that will give 100 Pure Essence when opened..

Poll Question #8

If Shooting Stars is added, should we add the Essence Pack as a reward? These packs will give 100 Pure Essence when opened.
