Wilderness Boss Rework
Last week’s Wilderness Boss Rework was a great success – it’s wonderful to see so many of you enjoying one of the game’s most underappreciated areas.

This week we hope to see even more of you checking the Wilderness out, as we introduce the next batch of improvements.

Drop Changes

Ah, the loot table – your biggest motivation, and our biggest challenge. It’s always tricky to balance these things, and the loot table for the Wilderness content is no different.

We’ve heard your feedback about the bosses’ loot not feeling rewarding enough for the risk you’re taking, so on Friday we made the following hotfixes:
  • Reduced Maximum number of players able to receive loot from 15 to 10.
  • Increased the minimum loot reward from 0% to 15% - so if you do less than 15% damage, you’ll still be rewarded as though you did 15%.
  • Increased quantity of base rewards.

Let’s see this in practice: a group of 10 players now effectively receive 1.5x more regular loot (on average) than a solo player, as well as getting significantly more kills per hour. Great!

Not so great: since this hotfix went live last week, we’ve seen concerns that the regular loot isn’t quite meeting your expectations. Having strong, consistent loot is important because it presents a dilemma; do you stick around to gain more rewards while risking being found by other players, or do you cash out while you can and go gear back up?

By our estimations, the regular loot per kill for Venenatis, Vet’ion and Callisto is worth somewhere between 130,000 and 150,000 GP. The problem is that those averages come from big ticket drops like Onyx Bolt Tips, which means that hitting one of these rewards mean players instantly head to the Bank instead of really weighing up their options.

All this to say that this week’s changes make the loot table a bit more consistent. We’ve increased the quantities of lower-value drops and made the Rune Pickaxe a little rarer, which makes room for more exciting drops like Dragon Platelegs or noted Blighted Anglerfish.

As we explained on the livestream, we’re intentionally cautious with loot following concern around the game’s economy. We don’t have a whole lot of player data on Wilderness content – almost like you lot have been avoiding it for some reason! – so we’re treading carefully and making small changes to begin with. We hope these improvements are already making your experience better, but please do keep sending your feedback – we'll be working to make sure we can get it just right.

Next week, we’ll have more to share – including the drop rates for all the bosses’ uniques!

Anti-Grief Mechanics

We've noted that players participating in the singles variants of the Wilderness bosses can be griefed easily by other players. As a result, we're making the following changes:
  • Calvar’ion now only summons two hounds no matter how many players are in the fight.
  • Spindel is limited to a maximum of 10 spiderlings, no matter how many players are in the fight.
  • All Wilderness bosses are now immune to Ring of Recoil and similar effects.
Further Changes

  • Rearranged Venenatis’ damage through Prayer from being rolled then capped at 30 to being capped at 30 and then rolled.
  • Calvar’ion will now only spawn up to seven lightning strikes at one time, regardless of the number of players in the arena – or the weather report.
Other Changes

  • Pets will no longer leap in to deliver Nurmof’s final line while he’s repairing your Dragon Pickaxe.
  • Fixed an issue where Artio’s head was clipping when within melee range.
Hotfixes Since Last Week
  • Fixed an issue where Accursed Sceptres (a) were reverting to Thammaron’s Sceptres while protected on PvP death when equipped.
  • Fixed an issue where the Voidwaker components turned into Coins upon death in the Wilderness.
On Our Radar

We’re aware of the following issues and working on fixes as we speak:
  • Boss entry fee is lost upon any Wilderness death.
    • We want to explore changing this so that you only lose the fee if you die in combat that began inside or within close proximity to the boss lairs and escape caves. Let us know your thoughts!
  • The ‘stall’ behaviour when falling into a boss lair can be disruptive in PvP scenarios.
  • Venenatis and Spindel’s web attacks are a bit too punishing on the Energy drain front.
    • At the very least, we want to reduce the drain for players under the effects of Stamina Potions, but we’re exploring other options for those of you who just have to walk it off.
  • Thamarron's Sceptre remains unable to auto-cast.
Fairy Ring Graphical Update Coming Next Week
We’ve let the fairies know that you’re not keen on their redecorated portals. It was a pretty awkward conversation (not least because we kept getting turned into frogs), but they’ve promised to try and tone the sparkles down a bit.

However, as discussed on our livestream, we’re still looking for a way to make the fairy rings more visible and easier to use on mobile. We can’t increase the size of their click-box due to a pesky technical limitation, so a cosmetic change is the only way to solve this problem.

The fairies are a big fan of the mobile client (it’s easier for their tiny little hands) and are eager to hear your thoughts. Is the change above good enough for next week's game update, or should they try again?

To let them know, just close your eyes, clap your hands, and say ‘I DO believe in the Fairy Ring Graphical Update!’ – or better yet, let us know your thoughts through the usual social media channels.
Welcome Screen Changes
We wanted to give you all a heads up on a change we'll soon be making to the welcome screen. Right now, we currently support two different versions of the welcome screen, with you currently having the ability to switch back and forth between the two. However, we'll soon be decommissioning one of these welcome screens.

Doing so will make it easier for us to maintain the welcome screen and also make it possible for us to add some useful features to it, such as better information on things like polls and account security (authenticator, bank pin, etc.).

Of the two welcome screens, many people are already using the one we'll be keeping, but for those who aren't, here's what it looks like:

Secrets of the North
We've made some improvements to the Venator Bow following your feedback on its use in both PvP and PvM! In last week's newspost, we gave you a heads up about these changes so they shouldn't come as a huge surprise.

The Venator Bow will now tell you how many charges you have remaining more frequently, at every increment of 500 charges. It will also print a more emphatic message when you hit 100 and 50 charges remaining.

Additionally, the below changes will apply in both PvP and PvM:
  • Secondary hits should now roll their own accuracy checks instead of using the one from the initial hit.
  • Arrows can now ricochet even if their target dies.
  • The speed of ricocheting arrows has been increased somewhat, which should make the Bow feel a bit nicer to use.

Let us know how you get on!

Enhanced C++ Client Improvements
• Improved minimap zoom functionality through a new slider feature, saving you the need to pinch the screen when trying to adjust it.
  • Minimap zoom will now be remembered on both mobile and desktop clients.
  • Added the ability to see your current combat level to a decimal place to view how far you are from your next combat level. This is OFF by default.
  • Fishing spots within Chambers of Xeric are now included under Fishing spot indicators.
  • Fixed various Clue Scroll Helper issues:
    • Resolved a bug with 'Hot and Cold' Clue Scrolls where the location list could disappear in certain situations.
    • Resolved a visual bug where the Fairy Queen NPC was not being highlighted by the Helper.
    • Resolved a bug where the Helper was not detecting a worn uncharged Amulet of Glory for a specific Master Clue.
    • Resolved a bug where incorrect information was displayed/highlighted in the Helper for certain cryptic clues.

Other Changes
• Restored missing text in the Accursed Sceptre creation message.
  • The Ardougne Diary task that calls for an imbued Salve Amulet is now clearer about where the Amulet must be imbued.
  • Deadman players may now obtain the Mystic Cards from Diango’s holiday items reclamation menu.
  • Players on the Deadman world who are still subject to its newbie PvP immunity are no longer eligible to receive the weapon drops from revenants.
  • Fixed a ‘hiding’ animation featured in Another Slice of H.A.M.
  • Players can no longer have multiple followers while Temple Trekking.
  • Fixed an issue where the Lumbridge Armour Stand was clipping on PvP Worlds.
Poll 78 Next Steps
We're delighted that you thought nearly everything in Poll 78 should pass! Even Hatius escaping justice and missing out on spending the rest of his days in a cosy Port Sarim jail cell couldn't ruin that!

Today we'd like to share the results of the Poll 78 priority survey, where you get to decide which of the passed questions get released first!

A whopping 9,000 of you voted! Without further ado, here are the top five results:
  • 1st - Increase Coin Pouch Capacity
  • 2nd - Magic Secateurs Inventory Usage
  • 3rd - Automatically Add Player-Made Runes to the Rune Pouch
  • 4th - Coloured Crystal Armour
  • 5th - Magic Secateurs & Farming Skillcape boost on Bush & Limpwurts

Starting with next week's update you'll be seeing the Coin Pouch capacity increasing, alongside being able to show off your peak Priffdinas FashionScape with Crystal Armour recolours. It will also be possible to make Super Extended Antifires from Extended Antifire Potions... say that ten times fast!

We expect to release the top 5 voted for in-game in the next two weeks and the remainder of the Poll 78 questions over the next month or two, as we start to plan the next Quality of Life Poll and what theme it will follow.

Thank you once again to everyone who left feedback and took part in the survey, we're already looking forward to the next one!
Crack The Clue 3
We're back with another helpful clue, for none other than you!

This will help with something you need to match, and of course you know, there is an extra catch!
Wilderness Boss Rework
If reading isn't your scene, the RuneScape Chronicles team (alongside Skill Specs, Torvesta, 9Rain and SoloMission) were kind enough to share their game plan and all the key details for today's update on our YouTube channel. You can check it out below, or by clicking here!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H-KI0Ww418&embeds_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fconfluence.office.jagex.com%2F&source_ve_path=MjM4NTE&feature=emb_title
Skill Specs and Torvesta's life-long feud will need to be put on hold if they're going to succeed today...

If reading is your scene, then keep on scrolling!

Before we dive in, we want to stress that this content is risky. The Wilderness is the only area in Gielinor where other players can attack you freely. If you plan to take on the reworked multi-combat bosses, or their weaker single-plus equivalents – do not bring anything with you that you are not prepared to lose. You’ve been warned!

Remember, you can check exactly what you’re risking using the ‘View Items Kept on Death’ button on the Equipment Interface. You can even use the toggles to see what you’ll keep when factors like Protect Item, Wilderness Level, and Skulls are in place.

In addition, there’s also a PK Skull Prevention toggle under the Control Settings tab. You can also adjust your Player Attack options to suit your preferences!

Now that you’ve been sufficiently warned, let’s take a look at the highlight of this week’s update: the reworked Wilderness bosses, who can be found in their swanky new digs south of the Demonic Ruins.

Make sure to get a lay of the land before heading out!

The reworked bosses are all multi-combat encounters, so bring some friends along, and be prepared to encounter teams of other players looking to take you down.

If you're an Iron looking for some bossing action, don't worry! As long as you're contributing to boss kills, you'll be eligible for a share of the loot. Just make double-sure to check your risked items so you don’t lose anything you’re not prepared to grind for again!

To access the boss lairs and the adjoining Escape Caves (more on those later), you’ll have to pay a 50,000 GP fee. Don’t worry – it decreases by 10,000 GP for every boss kill you rack up. This is part of our plan to reduce disruptive behaviour around the bosses, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on what’s happening over the coming days to make sure this fee isn’t substantially affecting honest players.

Oh, and should you die a noble, PvM death – to one of the bosses, not an opportunistic PKer – you’ll find your gravestone outside the entrance of whichever boss lair you died in.

Callisto

First up, it’s the bear in the big red lair!

Bear-ware of traps throughout the fight...

Callisto’s Den is the northernmost of the new lairs, although the move has only made everyone’s favourite bear angrier. Callisto is no longer able to enjoy staring out over the Wilderness' eastern shore while you whack him with impunity, and he's more than willing to whack back.

While we won't give too much away, you'll want to keep your distance from his ferocious melee attacks (perhaps you could get him to chill out somehow?) and steer well clear of his bear traps. We’re not totally sure why a bear has so many bear traps lying around, but the last three people we sent to reach out for comment have yet to return…

Callisto has a handful of attacks to keep you on your toes even at a distance and will enrage in the later stages of the fight, so keep your wits about you and stay on the move!

Vet'ion

This scary skeleton now resides in Vet'ion's Rest, just south of Lava Dragon Isle. Unfortunately for you, he's doing anything but resting and is instead unleashing a barrage of attacks on any would-be skeleton slayer!

Eagle-eyed players will be used to Vet’ion looking like an oversized version of Ranalph Devere from Legends’ Quest, but with this week’s update he’s had a makeover – a bit like that goth girl from The Breakfast Club, if she was a giant magical skeleton.

This life-changing experience has also taught Vet’ion to use his shield – keep an eye out for when he raises it, lest you be hit with a nasty deflect!

Vet’ion’s skeletal hellhounds are as loyal as ever and will return during the new encounter. Unfortunately you will have to take them down (you monster!) while dodging Vet’ion’s powerful lightning attacks.

And of course, after running out of health Vet’ion will enter orange mode, where he’ll have lower defence but an increased max hit and faster attack speed. That’s the power of vitamin C!

Venenatis

The massive, eight-legged matriarch has gained some extra leg hair, a set of fierce fangs, and an egg sac full of adorable little ones… and she can’t wait for you to meet them.

You're going to need a comically large newspaper for this one...

You’ll find Venenatis and her brood hanging out in the Silk Chasm, a mere scuttle away from the Dark Crabs Teleport.

Once inside, you'll be fighting for your life on a gargantuan web, precariously spun over a near-endless void. To make things worse, you’re not alone. Venenatis will summon spiderlings throughout the fight, whose only goal is to chase you down and feast on your Prayer Points! Fortunately, they’re not especially resistant, and a quick whack with a sword – or anything else – will send them packing.

Venenatis values her personal space and will try to keep her distance while she bombards you with Magic and Ranged. Those of you looking to stay up close and personal should watch where you walk though, lest you find yourself caught in a particularly nasty web attack.

The Escape Caves
While each of the reworked bosses has their own lair, accessible from the surface, you won't be leaving the same way you came in. Instead, you'll have to make your way past the boss and exit through the aptly-named Escape Caves.

These caves are an interconnected web of tunnels, with four exits to the surface.

Here's a top-down look at the Escape Caves, featuring some less-than-friendly bears and poison spiders!

Upon leaving a boss lair (or logging out inside of one), you'll be placed at one of three random locations in the Escape Caves, at either the north, south-east or south-west edges of the cave. Anybody following close behind (within 10 seconds) will be able to trail you through the dark and wind up at the same location - so make sure to get on the move, and quickly!

There’s one problem, though – the caves are absolutely infested with bears, skeletons and poison spiders. Unlike your ordinary, run of the mill poison spiders, the unique conditions within these caves have imbued this particular sub-species with a Magic attack. Also, your Prayer points will constantly drain over time, so don't hang around and get a move on!

These NPCs aren't intended to rip through your hitpoints – they’re just there to stop people camping the caves and ruining your dash to safety!

Now, onto the part you’ve all been waiting for… the rewards!

Rewards
From left-to-right: the Webweaver Bow, the Accursed Sceptre, the Ursine Chainmace and the Voidwaker.

You should already know all about these rewards, since you voted on them last year, but let's make sure everybody's up to speed!

Thammaron's Sceptre

Okay, this isn’t new. In fact, the Sceptre has been in Old School RuneScape since 2018, but it's struggled to keep up with the other Revenant weapons. In the spirit of reworks, we've given this weapon a much-needed touch-up!

As of today, Thammaron's Sceptre will function as a powered staff, similar to the Trident of the Seas, the Sanguinesti Staff or Tumeken's Shadow.

The powered staff attack costs one Revenant Ether per cast, has an attack speed of 4 and a max hit equal to your Magic Level divided by 3, minus 8. This means that at 99 Magic, your 'base' max hit will be 25, increasing by 50% against Wilderness NPCs and further benefiting from any gear that increases Magic Damage %.

Unlike other powered staves, Thammaron's Sceptre is capable of auto-casting non-powered spells (including Flames of Zamorak). When cast against NPCs in the Wilderness, the 50% damage and accuracy increase means your spells will pack a serious punch - Wilderness Slayer just got a whole lot more satisfying!

Additionally, the powered staff attack will be able to hit other players. Since Craw's Bow and Viggora's Chainmace work pretty nicely for getting a little extra damage off while escaping, we didn't want to short-change Magic users.

Perhaps you're looking to give this sceptre a little more oomph? We've got just the thing!

Accursed Sceptre

This magic weapon is an upgrade to the new-and-improved Thammaron’s Sceptre. If you get hold of a Skull of Vet’ion from, well, Vet’ion, and you have 85 Crafting, you can use it to craft the Accursed Sceptre. If you don’t have 85 Crafting, Andros Mai in the Ferox Enclave will do the job for a cool 500,000 GP.

The Accursed Sceptre is a tradeable upgrade to the reworked Thammaron's Sceptre, with a Magic attack of 22 and a max hit equal to your magic level divided by 3, minus 6. This means that at 99 Magic you'll be hitting up to 27 Magic damage every four ticks/cycles.

This accursed upgrade also gains a special attack: Condemn. Condemn costs 50% Special Attack energy and performs an attack with 50% increased max hit and 50% increased accuracy. On a successful hit, the target's Defense and Magic are reduced by up to 15%.

Defense and Magic reduction from Condemn cannot be lowered beyond 85% of their initial value. For a target with 80 Defence and 80 Magic, Condemn cannot reduce these stats any lower than 68.

A well-timed Condemn could be the difference between getting frozen or forcing your opponent to chug a stat-restoring potion - and it may well have some neat PvM applications!

Webweaver Bow

For those of you who like to keep your distance in combat but can't tell your runes from your elbow - consider this Ranged upgrade!

The Fangs of Venenatis are a rare, tradeable drop from Venenatis – wow, who would have guessed? A player with 85 Fletching can combine them with Craw's Bow to make a Webweaver Bow. Alternatively, Phabelle Bile in the Ferox Enclave can combine them for 500,000 GP.

The Webweaver Bow is a tradeable upgrade for Craw's Bow. It requires 70 Ranged to wield, has 85 Ranged attack bonus and 65 Ranged strength (compared to Craw's Bow's 75 Ranged attack and 60 Ranged strength) and gains a special attack: Swarm.

Swarm costs 50% Special Attack energy and unleashes four attacks in rapid succession with increased accuracy. Each of these attacks is capped at 40% damage, theoretically maxing out at 160% damage if every attack max hits. On top of this, successful attacks have a chance to inflict poison on hit, starting out at 4 poison damage.

Ursine Chainmace

We’re removing heads, ripping out fangs – why stop there? Get your paws on the Claws of Callisto and you can combine them with Viggora’s Chainmace to craft the Ursine Chainmace – assuming you have 85 Smithing. If not, Derse Venator in the Ferox Enclave can combine them for – you guessed it – 500,000 GP.

The Ursine Chainmace is a tradeable upgrade for Viggora's Chainmace. Requiring 70 Attack to wield, it has higher Crush and Melee Strength bonuses than Viggora's Chainmace and gains a special attack: Bear Down.

Bear Down costs 50% Special Attack energy and hits with 100% improved accuracy. If Bear Down hits, it deals 20 damage over 6 seconds (10 ticks), prevents running for 3.6 seconds (6 ticks) and reduces the target's Agility level by 20. If you see somebody sporting this ursine upgrade, make sure to bring some stat restoring potions!

Hitting your opponent at just the right time might enable you to put some distance between the two of you if you're able to make use of any nearby Agility obstacles, so Bear Down sparingly!

That's all of the upgrades coming with today's game update, but we've still got room for one more reward...

The Voidwaker

The one you've all been waiting for. It's some kind of a PvP weapon, with Void associations? It rings a bell, but we just can’t place it…

Each of the three bosses will drop a piece of the separated Voidwaker; the blade, hilt and crystal. As components, these items are tradeable. An NPC beneath the Old Nite in the Ferox Enclave will offer to reassemble the Voidwaker for 500,000 GP. The completed Voidwaker is also tradeable and behaves like any other item on death.

The Voidwaker requires 75 Attack, 75 Strength and 60 Magic to equip.

At a glance, the Voidwaker should slot in as a strong non-degradeable Strength training option for 75 Attack builds with limited Defence. Which admittedly sounds pretty niche, but it's a nice little bonus on top of being a pretty consistent ‘Spec weapon'!

And what would a 'Spec weapon' be without a neat Special Attack?

Disrupt costs 50% Special Attack energy and deals guaranteed Magic damage between 50-150% of your Melee max hit.

While this void-y blade is predominantly aimed to shake things up a little in PvP, it definitely packs a punch in PvM encounters too. HiImSido put together this neat summary showing off how the Voidwaker (and the other weapons from today's update) compare to other Spec weapons in a handful of PvM scenarios.

Pets

While not strictly a new reward for today's update, we've made some changes to the Wilderness Boss pets that we think you should know about.

Since Callisto, Vet'ion and Venenatis have all been given graphical upgrades, the Callisto Cub, Venenatis Spiderling and Vet'ion Jr. have had their appearances upgraded to match.

Understandably, some of you preferred your pets just the way they were – which is why they now have a ‘Metamorphosis’ option which will let you choose between their old and new appearances.

Got your eye on some of the rewards above but don't fancy taking on a multi-combat menace? If you don't mind a slightly longer grind, we've got you covered!

New Single-plus Bosses
Today's update not only reworks the multi-combat bosses you've come to know and safespot, but also adds some solo-focused bosses that take after their multi-combat counterparts.

Artio, Calvarion and Spindel are the toned-down, soloable relatives of Callisto, Vet'ion and Venenatis, and have their very own lairs located in and around the Graveyard of Shadows below level 30 Wilderness.

Here are the new, soloable boss lair entrances! Watch out for zombies and ghosts...

Access to these lairs makes use of the same fee system outlined earlier in the blog, but there's no web of Escape Caves involved for these bosses.

Instead you'll enter a lair, pay the fee, fight a boss, and (assuming you don't meet an untimely end) either teleport out or exit the lair to arrive back on the surface where you entered. Logging out inside one of these lairs will place you gently back at the entrance when you log back in.

Artio resides in Hunter’s End, Calvarion stirs in the Skeletal Tomb, and Spindel lives in the aptly-named Web Chasm. Their mechanics are identical to their tougher counterparts, they just don't hit so hard, and fall over faster.

If you’re brave enough to take them down all by your lonesome, you’ll be rewarded with familiar loot, including rings, pets, and the elusive Dragon Pickaxe. There’s also a significantly lower chance of walking away with the uniques listed above.

The aim for Artio, Calvarion and Spindel is to have a 'time-to-complete' for the Wilderness Rings and Pet Log slots that's similar to Callisto, Vet'ion and Venenatis before today's update. We'll be keeping a close eye on kill times, drop rates and your feedback to make sure they're delivering on this!

Additionally, these single-plus bosses will count towards Achievement Diary tasks or Combat Achievements that currently exist - since many of you have grown accustomed to soloing the pre-rework bosses anyway, this feels like it makes sense.

That's a wrap on the Wilderness bosses for this week's update, but there’s still much more to the Wilderness rework. Let’s pay a visit to everyone’s favourite haunted caves…

Revenants
In a poll alongside the Phantom Muspah rewards, we asked you a handful of questions about Revenant weapons.

To sum up, you voted for us to increase the base drop rates of the Revenant weapons by 50% and for them to be dropped five times more often if you're killing them on a Slayer task. If you'd like to see those numbers visualised in a massive table, check out this blog from November 2022.

We hope that this goes some way to keeping the price of the attachments added in this week’s update as healthy as possible, and we’ll be closely monitoring the markets over the coming weeks.

Now, if you're not a fan of Wilderness content, this next bit is likely the moment you've been waiting for…

The Dragon Pickaxe
As of this week’s update, the Dragon Pickaxe will be available from the Kalphite Queen and the Volcanic Mine.

The Kalphite Queen now drops the Dragon Pickaxe at a rate of 1/400. While this infamous insect isn't for the faint of heart, this update might give you a little something to look forward to if you're yet to tick off the Desert Elite Diary. On the other hand, if you're named after a Herblore secondary and have a YouTube series documenting the progress of your extreme one-chunk-at-a-time Ironman, and happen to have the Kalphite Queen's respective chunk unlocked..

Meanwhile, back at the Volcanic Mine, Petrified Percy is over the moon because he’s been given a seemingly unending pile of Ore Packs to exchange for your Volcanic Mine points. There’s a chance for each one to contain a Broken Dragon Pickaxe. Just don’t ask how it got broken in the first place…

You remember Nurmof the Dwarf, right? Luckily for you, he still remembers how to repair broken Pickaxes, and he’s willing to fix up your Broken Dragon Pickaxe for a mere 2,500,000 GP. This hefty cost helps the Pickaxe retain some of its value while making it obtainable for those who don’t fancy PvM. Plus, the values of the ores in the Ore Packs should go some way towards the cost of repair!

Nurmof's ready to fix pickaxes once again, though this time it's at a hefty premium!

Lastly, the handsome three-headed King Black Dragon has had his Pickaxe drop rate adjusted from 1/1,500 to 1/1,000. Lovely!

On top of all this, we'd like to remind you that you'll still be able to obtain your fancy red Mining upgrade from the Wilderness bosses – in fact, that’s still the quickest way to obtain it. Variety is the spice of life, though, and we hope this update brings Pickaxe-hunters a few more attractive options.
Zaryte Crossbow and Sapphire Bolts
This isn't strictly related to the Wilderness Boss Rework, but the Rework means it's a good time for us to make an adjustment to a fairly divisive weapon.

To get everybody up to speed, enchanted Sapphire Bolts and enchanted Sapphire Dragon Bolts have a 5% chance to trigger the Clear Mind effect. Clear Mind reduces the target's Prayer Points by 5% of the attacker's Ranged level, rounded down. This Prayer drain effect was able to apply in full regardless of a target's Hitpoints, meaning it was possible for a group of players to consistently and completely drain a target's Prayer Points to 0 while securing kills.

In the past, this effect wasn't particularly potent due to its low proc rate. The Zaryte Crossbow changed things, since its Special Attack guarantees the Clear Mind effect will trigger on your next hit. Since the Zaryte Crossbow's addition, we've seen feedback from players that there feels like very little counterplay for those on the receiving end of this interaction. We agree that this is something we may have overlooked when allowing players to guarantee an enchanted bolt's effect, and would like to make an adjustment to Clear Mind in PvP scenarios.

Following today's update, if the target's remaining Hitpoints are less than 5% of the attacker's Ranged stat, the Prayer drain will be calculated using the target's remaining Hitpoints instead. Additionally, the Prayer drain will only activate if a bolt passes its accuracy check - the Zaryte Crossbow doubles the accuracy on the next shot, so this is unlikely to crop up.

This should provide players with a little more counterplay by keeping their Prayer Points higher than their Hitpoints, similar to the Ancient Mace.

We've also seen some players suggest that this Zaryte Crossbow Smiting technique was pretty effective at discouraging one-item raggers in some PvP scenarios, including wars between clans. While we're sticking to our guns and believe this is the right change to make from a game design perspective, we’re open to conversations about better ways to combat ragging and disruptive behaviour. We've seen a handful of interesting suggestions already and are sure we'll see even more, so watch this space!

That’s all for the Wilderness Boss Rework this week, but a little Mahjarrat has told us there are some other changes going on up north that you ought to know about…

Secrets of the North and Phantom Muspah Tweaks
Those of you who’ve uncovered the Secrets of the North have been sinking your teeth into Gielinor’s newest nightmare: the Phantom Muspah. If you haven't gotten around to finishing the quest yet, drop everything and get it done! It's chock-full of puzzles, dripping in mystery, and crucially, you'll need it completed if you want to get stuck in to Desert Treasure II - The Fallen Empire later this year.

If you missed it in last week’s newspost, we’ve adjusted the Muspah’s melee behaviour to allow players to perform the ‘stepback’ mechanic. This was initially removed during a bugfix, with the Muspah’s accuracy knocked down a peg to compensate. Ultimately, this means that if the Phantom Muspah is moving while attacking you’ll probably take 0 damage. If it isn’t – bad news, you’re probably getting hit.

We're glad to see many of you back at the boss and enjoying well-timed movement to lessen the damage you're taking. For those of you who still aren't too sure what this 'stepback' mechanic is, we'd recommend checking out this quick guide also by HiImSido, who will explain all…

While it's great to see some members of the community giving this nightmarish horror a nickname, we'd like to make some further tweaks to the 'money slug's’ loot table this week to get things into a slightly healthier spot. We've made the following changes:

  • Torstol Seeds from 5 to 4
  • Snapdragon from 31 herbs to 5 seeds
  • Dragon Platelegs from 3 to 2
  • Runite Ore from 23 to 18
  • Ranarr Seed (rare) from 10 to 8
  • Toadflax from 74 to 55

We’ve also rotated the Ancient Sceptre. No, seriously, we had a word with health and safety and that thing was playing hell with your character’s wrists. You should notice that it’s held in a more comfortable position following this week’s update.

We'll be making some tweaks to the Venator Bow next week to make it feel a little more reliable. Namely we're looking to increase the bounce speed of projectiles, allow arrows to bounce from dead NPCs, and make sure bounces are still able to deal damage even if the initial hit is a 0.

Other Changes
If you've made it this far, thanks for sticking with us!

Here's a list of this week's smaller changes to help you wind down:

  • Some missing texture has been restored to the steps west of Paterdomus. Once you pointed it out, we couldn't un-see it...
  • Corrected grammar in a menu at Pyramid Plunder.
  • A warning against accidentally burying bones, previously used at the Chaos Temple in the Wilderness, has been extended to the bone grinder room above the Ectofunctus, too.
  • Separate, more informative warnings have been added when entering the Wilderness on a High-Risk world via the ditch, Ferox Enclave, or canoes.
Crack the Clue 3
Towards the end of last year, we released the first few in-game clues for Crack the Clue 3, made by one of Old School's most legendary players: Woox.

The clues this time around are certainly delightlyfully devilish, but he'd like to help you see more progress. With that in mind, we have two messages to share with any would-be Clue Crackers.

That should give you enough to chew on this week. We'll be sharing Woox's helping hands weekly, so make sure to keep an eye out if you're trying to Crack the Clue.

If you'd like to learn more or get involved yourself, head on over to the Crack the Clue Discord server to see the community's progress so far and solve the next steps collaboratively!

World 390 (AUS) for LMS Competitive has been activated with this rota.

The PvP Arena is using 'Pure' loadouts in Ranked Duels and Tournaments this week.

That's everything we've got for you this week! We're excited to see you tackle the reworked Wilderness bosses or perhaps snag that Dragon Pickaxe you've been putting off grinding for so long.

We'll be keeping a close eye on all of your feedback, so make sure to get in touch and let us know what you think!

It’s been a week since the long-awaited return of the Mah̶̹͚̯̫̹̿̊̔̀̇̆̐̀̃͜jarrat and the reveal of the new Muspah boss! We’re ovḙ̴̛͖̣͕͑͋́̐͝͝rjoyed to see how much love Secrets of the North is getting.

That said, we’ve made the usual array of changes and improvements, including a few hotfixes from l̶̞̝̜͇̙͉̟͓̰̩̙̺̱͔͌̎̐͂́͂̑̾̊̃͜ast week:

[/expand]
Now, onto this week’s changes!

We’ve heard your call to make the Saturated Heart tradeable, which means you’ll now be able to swap it between party members just as you would the Imbued Heart – useful if you’re planning on raiding any time soon! This also means you may be able to find one on the Grand Exchange… if you’re lucky.

Now, onto the boss themselves. The post-quest version of the Muspah now has the ‘spectral’ attribute, which means that should you slay it with the Ectoplasmator on h̶̦͙̬͇̖̰̋͋̌̉̔̏ͅḁ̴̧̦̭͈̤̠̿͆̓͌͊̔͑͊͌̂͂͐͋͝n̷͓̝̒̍͝d̷̳̭͓̟͍͍͔̠͈̭̎́͊̒̂͒͌̏͜͜, you’ll gain Prayer XP equal to 20% of its max health, rounded down.

You can see this new detail and more when using Monster Examine on the Muspah. We’ve also ensured that your Collection Log will now show that you’ve collected all the Muspah’s drops by highlighting the relevant section in green!

Finally, we’ve reduced the Alchemy value of the Venator Shard.

Although that’s everything for this week, do keep an eye out for further improvements in future, including Combat Achievements and some minor visual changes to the Ancient Sceptre!

Oh, and before we forget, here are the drop rates from the post-quest version of the boss, as per our new, t̷̗̖̬͇̄r̷̡̠̠̀́̇̈a̸̱̙̹̼͐̄̚͝ņ̷̟̼̱̞̓̆̈́s̸̥͑͑̈́̌͆p̵̯̝̻̫̦̄͒̅ä̸̘͉͙́r̸̤̯͉̿̈͐̚e̶̯͔͎͖̟̓͛̆̐͝n̸̢͉̎́̽̾͠t̵̝͙͌ approach. Enjoy!
  • Venator Shard: 1/100
  • Ancient Icon: 1/50
  • Frozen Cache: 1/25
  • Muphin (Pet): 1/2500

There are a couple of bosses hanging out in the wild, wild Wilderness that could be tweaked to give you all a better experience. Their names are Callisto, Venenatis and Vet’ion!

The rework will include updated visuals and brand-new lairs for each of the bosses. We’re also introducing two variants of each boss – one that retains the true multi-combat experience, and a less risky one that can be found in a single-plus combat zone.

We’re also offering brand-new rewards including an upgraded version of Thammaron’s Sceptre, two new Melee weapons, and a new Ranged weapon.
Secrets of the North
It's here at last: our first continuation of the Mahjarrat storyline! Those of you who paid close attention throughout November last year and saw our 2022 Winter Summit already know quite a bit about this quest, but let’s refresh your memory before you get stuck in to this intriguing murder mystery.

Our story begins - as all good murder mysteries do - with a mysterious murder! To start the quest, head to the Carnillean household just north of the Clock Tower in the south-west corner of East Ardougne.

To make sure you're equipped with everything you need to crack the case (and clear your own name as a suspect!) you'll need the following:
  • Quest Requirements
    • Making Friends with My Arm
    • Devious Minds
    • Hazeel Cult
    • The General's Shadow
  • Skill Requirements
    • 69 Agility
    • 64 Thieving
    • 56 Hunter
    • We'd recommend a Combat Level of 85.

Be prepared to form an uneasy alliance, dig up secrets best left buried deep, and walk away with more questions than answers...

For your troubles, you can expect the following rewards:
  • Rewards
    • 2 Quest Points
    • 60,000 Agility XP
    • 50,000 Thieving XP
    • 40,000 Hunter XP
    • Access to a repeatable, solo-only boss.

It’s also worth noting that Secrets of the North is a direct prequel to the highly-anticipated Desert Treasure II – The Fallen Empire, coming later this year. Read all about it in the Winter Summit Summary Blog!

You also voted for a selection of new rewards from the repeatable boss unlocked at the end of the quest. We went over the details in the relevant poll blog, but here’s a quick overview – along with the actual item names!

Venator Bow

The Venator Bow is a tier-80 Ranged weapon which uses charges to bounce arrows between nearby targets!

To assemble the Bow, you’ll need to obtain five Venator Shards, which also drop from the boss.

What sets the Venator Bow apart from other ranged weaponry is its ability to hit up to three targets with a single shot. When charged with Ancient Essence, the bow consumes one charge per attack to make arrows bounce between NPCs.

Once the initial attack hits an NPC, the arrow will try to find another nearby target. If the arrow finds another target, it performs an accuracy roll. Should the bounce 'hit' the target, damage will be rolled between 0 and 66% of your max hit. From the second target, the arrow will try to bounce back to the original target and perform another hit (again capped at 66% of max hit). If your original target has perished or isn't in range, the arrow will look for a third target instead.

The specifics of the bounce mechanic are explained in greater detail in the poll blog. Remember, back then we were calling this the ‘Bloodletter Bow’!

Both the Venator Shards and the uncharged Venator Bow will be tradeable.

We'll be keeping a very close eye on your feedback about the rate at which you're gaining and losing charges with this weapon - so make sure to let us know your thoughts if you're fortunate enough to snag one early on.

Ancient Icon and Sceptre

The Ancient Icon is an untradeable magical artefact that’s absolutely brimming with potential power. Take it to a specific NPC and they’ll be able to combine it with the Ancient Staff to create the Ancient Sceptre!

This is an untradeable weapon that is designed to sit between the Ancient Staff and the Kodai Wand. It not only provides a +5% magic strength bonus, but also buffs the effects of all Ancient Magicks by 10%. Here’s how that works:

Blood Magick:
  • Healing from these spells becomes 10% more effective.
  • This means that all spells will heal the caster with a base of 27.5% of the damage dealt (a 2.5% increase).
  • The effect from the staff also stacks multiplicatively with Bloodbark Armour: (25% + (Bloodbark Armour)) x 1.1 = 32.5% x 1.1 = 35.75% increased healing when wearing Bloodbark Armour and wielding the Soulblight Sceptre.

Ice Magick:
  • The freeze duration from these spells becomes 10% longer.
    • Ice Rush: Does not benefit. Ice Rush is an 8 tick (4.8 seconds) freeze. A 10% increase would take this to 8.8 ticks, and Old School always rounds down, so we're right back where we started!
    • Ice Burst: 16 ticks (9.6 seconds) → 17 ticks (10.2 seconds)
    • Ice Blitz: 24 ticks (14.4 seconds) → 26 ticks (15.6 seconds)
    • Ice Barrage: 32 ticks (19.2 seconds) → 35 ticks (21 seconds)

Shadow Magick:
  • The stat drain effects from these spells are 10% more effective.
    • Shadow Rush and Shadow Burst will reduce your opponent's Attack by 11%.
    • Shadow Blitz and Shadow Barrage will reduce your opponent's Attack by 16%.

Smoke Magick:
  • Increases the 'Poison Value' of the Poison effect by 10%.
    • Poison Damage will be dealt 11 times, instead of 10, when casting Smoke Rush and Smoke Burst.
    • Poison Damage will be dealt 22 times, instead of 20, when casting Smoke Blitz and Smoke Barrage.

All of these effects will be enabled in PvP situations, so they will be usable across the full range of content in-game.

To wield this Ancient upgrade, you'll need 60 Strength and 70 Magic. Here's how its stats shape up:

Some of you have been wondering how the Ancient Sceptre behaves on death in PvP situations. Currently, if you die in PvP the Ancient Sceptre is destroyed and must be re-obtained. The PKer receives a plain old Ancient Staff.

We’ll be exploring adjustments to this behaviour in the near future, such as having the Sceptre break and require a repair cost, the value of which will be dropped to the PKer. The repair cost would slot somewhere between that of Ahrim’s Staff and the Master Wand, since that’s roughly where the Ancient Sceptre sits in terms of PvP power. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this issue!

Saturated Heart

Some rewards make your heart leap out of your chest. This reward, however, is someone else’s heart. Delightful!

Using enough Ancient Essence on an Imbued Heart will transform it into the Saturated Heart, absolutely dripping with magical energy.

Aside from being super gross, the Saturated Heart buffs Magic by 4 + 10% of the player’s base Magic level (rounded down). This boost won't drain over time, similar to a Divine Potion effect, so you'll be able to continue firing off spells at maximum power to your heart's content. Literally.

Bear in mind that the Saturated Heart shares a cooldown with the Imbued Heart, so you won't be able to use them both at the same time.

Forgotten Brew

Just like the Saturated Heart, the Forgotten Brew is created by adding Ancient Essence to an Ancient Brew, increasing its potency and boosting your Magic level even higher.

  • Ancient Brew boosts the player's Magic level by 2 + 5% of their base Magic level and restores Prayer Points equal to 2 + 10% of their base Prayer level (with the ability to restore up to 5% over the player's base Prayer level).
  • Forgotten Brew boosts the player's Magic level by 3 + 8% of their base Magic level and restores Prayer Points equal to 2 + 10% of their base Prayer level (with the ability to restore up to 5% over the player's base Prayer level).
Both potions will still drain Attack, Strength and Defence levels by 2 + 10% of your current levels - so drink responsibly!

To cook up one of these Forgotten Brews yourself, you'll need a whopping 91 Herblore. Each Brew will net you 145 XP. Delicious!

Ancient Essence

In case it wasn't clear, this is a resource you can either obtain from the new boss or by breaking down Venator Shards.

It's used in the creation of some of the rewards outlined above, to charge the Venator Bow, and as an ingredient in Forgotten Brews.

And that’s about all we have to say about the new boss! We’re excited to watch you come together and figure out exactly how it works.

In the meanwhile, let’s move on to the rest of this week’s update!
Christmas Event 2022
The Nutcracker Pub will be closing its doors today as the festive season comes to an end. Those of you who last logged out inside the pub – don’t worry mate, we’ve all been there – will find themselves just west of Barbarian Village when they next log in. If for some reason you find yourself in some sort of endless Christmas purgatory with no escape, let us know. We’ll do our best to get you out before the Gnome Child gets hungry.

We hope you enjoyed this year’s event, and we’ve loved seeing your new festive fashionscape on show! Perhaps we’ll see if the Nutcracker will have you back some time in the future…

Speaking of, we’ve made a small change to the Nutcracker Staff’s stats to bring them in line with other ‘fun’ weapons. We saw a handful of feedback from skillers that the Staff’s guaranteed zero damage re-enabled methods and metas that haven’t been seen for some time. We don’t want to spoil all the fun, so we’re actively looking into these so-called ‘splashing’ weapons and the conversation surrounding them. Keep an ear to the ground for more news!
An Update on the Wilderness Boss Rework
The next major update you’ll see this month is the Wilderness Boss Rework, making its way to a barren wasteland near you on January 25th.

We’ve been running all kinds of tests since our last update, and we’ve made a few changes based on the results. Have a read!

Non-multi Boss Variants

We’ve already spoken about our plans to provide alternative, weaker versions of the reworked Wilderness Bosses that will be outside multi-combat zones. They’re designed for players who prefer to do things solo and will offer unique items for completionists. In exchange, there’s a lower monetary reward compared to their multi-combat equivalents.

These solo bosses have lairs of their own, with entrances in and around the Graveyard of Shadows north of Ferox Enclave. They’re all below level 30 Wilderness.

During testing, we found that having the lairs be true, single-way combat didn’t make players feel they were engaging in real, risky Wilderness content. The ability to teleport away at any point during a kill, even with PKers in the cave, took the ‘risk’ out of the ‘risk vs. reward’ philosophy we built the Wilderness on.

As a result we’ve decided that for the time being these lairs will actually be Single-Plus combat zones, similar to the Revenant Caves. You’ll still be able to teleport out, but won’t be able to avoid the inherent risk associated with Wilderness content.

The Dragon Pickaxe

There’s been a lot of hype about bringing the Wilderness bosses in line with modern standards, but we also want to highlight our plans to fix the issues surrounding the Dragon Pickaxe.

From January 25th the King Black Dragon will drop the Dragon Pickaxe at a rate of 1/1,000 instead of 1/1,500. The Kalphite Queen will also have the Dragon Pickaxe added to her loot table, at a rate of 1/400.

Now, let’s move on to another ‘hot’ topic – the Volcanic Mine.

Petrified Pete looks more than ready to see some fresh faces!

Implementing the Pickaxe at Volcanic Mine proved a bit more complicated than adding it to an NPC's loot table since many players already have vast quantities of points saved up.

We’re implementing a trade-off for players with points to spare, which should make chasing the Pickaxe a goal in itself and won’t risk locking its value at a fixed price.

To do this, we’re adding an Ore Pack to the shop which you can buy with points. There’s a chance for the Ore Pack to contain a broken Dragon Pickaxe left behind by an unfortunate ex-miner. Players looking to maximise their profits are still encouraged to buy Runite Ore instead – these Ore Packs exist exclusively for players chasing the elusive Pickaxe.

Those of you who’ve been playing for a while will remember Broken Dragon Pickaxes from the exploding rock random event. Even though it’s been a good seven years, Nurmof the dwarf remembers them too, and he’s willing to flex his repair skills for 2,500,000 GP. This hefty cost helps the Pickaxe retain some of its value while making it obtainable for those who don’t fancy PvM. Plus, the values of the ores in the Ore Packs should go some way towards the cost of repair!

We’d really like to hear your thoughts about the new repair system and fees, so be sure to let us know through the usual channels.
Other Changes
Since it’s been a hot minute since our last update, we’ve got a lot more changes than usual – so get scrolling!

Combat Achievements
  • 'Perfect Wardens' was occasionally failing during Phase One even when players cleared the group/split orb attack successfully. This should be working as intended with this week’s update.
  • Players who meet their untimely demise and landed in purgatory during the Wardens fight will no longer be locked out of the ‘Tombs Speed Runner’ combat achievement. The task should retroactively complete for players who should have checked it off already.
  • Various Tombs of Amascut Combat Achievements require specific Raid Levels for completion. These were made significantly easier by using time-limit Invocations to boost the Raid Level, because the Achievements would complete even if players failed the time limit. As of this week Achievements will trigger based on the Raid Level upon entering the Loot Room, so players will either need to complete the raid within their chosen time limit or use different Invocations.
  • Group Iron groups consisting of just two players no longer need to complete the ‘Personal Space’ Combat Achievement at Bloat, which requires three players.
  • Some weapons with multi-hit special attacks (such as the Crystal Halberd) were incorrectly failing the 'Hesporisn't' Combat Achievement if one of the final attacks hit for zero damage. This behaviour has been corrected.
Miscellaneous
  • Ore prices at the Blast Furnace Ore Shop now remain static, as polled in Poll 77. Although we initially made this change for Iron players, we’ve now decided to implement it in all versions of the Shop.
  • Various unique rewards from Nex and the Tombs of Amascut have been added to the Grand Exchange's Item Sink list:
    • Zaryte Vambraces
    • Zaryte Crossbow
    • Torva Helm
    • Torva Chest
    • Torva Legs
    • Ancient Godsword
    • Osmumten's Fang
    • Masori Mask (f)
    • Masori Body (f)
    • Masori Chaps (f)
    • Tumeken's Shadow
    • Lightbearer
    • Elidinis' Ward
  • The Equipment interface now shows the Attack Speed for your currently equipped weapon and selected attack style. This shows the 'base' attack speed, as well as any modifiers that might be in place. For example, a Magic shortbow would show as a 2.4s base attack speed, with a 1.8s 'actual' attack speed when using the Rapid attack style.
  • Stat Restore Pot Share and Boost Potion Share spells now take into account the Holy Wrench, Prayer Skillcape, Max Cape and Ring of the Gods (i)'s respective effects when used to share the effects of any potion impacted by these items.
  • Players looting the Rewards Guardian at Guardians of the Rift should no longer receive duplicate Pouches when looting with a degraded Colossal Pouch. You’ll get Abyssal Pearls and like it!
  • Mounting stuffed heads in your Player-Owned House now gives you the option to avoid gaining Defence XP, in case you'd like to make your pure's living area a little more homely.
  • Players can no longer grief each other inside the Tombs of Amascut by teleporting away after picking up mirrors on the Path of Het or after telegrabbing water containers on the Path of Crondis.
  • Various Slayer interfaces, such as the Rewards interface accessed through various Slayer masters, have had their capitalisation made more consistent with other interfaces in the game.
  • The Ranged and Magic tutors in Lumbridge let players automatically equip Runes and Arrows or place them in the Rune Pouch. You can now toggle these options in the Settings menu, instead of schlepping all the way to Lumbridge. If this is the first time you're learning about this setting, enjoy your newfound QoL!
  • Some players reported catastrophic effects on Bank organisation when accidentally removing all of their Bank fillers at once. We've added a confirmation option to prevent a misclick from ruining your hard work.
  • Players can now store over 1,023 items in a single Bank tab.
  • Fresh Start World players no longer need to switch tabs to see their Achievement Points update.
  • Some players reported impossible Quest Speedrunning times around world crashes, since the speedrun would remain active but the timer would reset to 0. We've fixed this behaviour.
  • You should have an easier time clicking Fairy Rings from now on, because we’ve improved the clickbox. We’ve also given it a quick lick of paint to make it even more obvious!
This butterfly-filled beam indicates the adjusted clickbox for Fairy rings and looks suitably magical to boot!

  • Similarly, we've improved the clickbox for the obstacle at the very top of the Agility Pyramid, meaning you'll be able to secure your loot without accidentally running around the whole top level, falling down an obstacle, and logging out in frustration.
  • Changing chat channels via commands such as /@f will no longer send an empty message in chat.
  • The gate to Rellekka’s mine no longer breaks visually when used by two players at the same time.
  • Any Soul Wars ghosts reading this should watch their back, because the Salve Amulet's combat bonuses will now apply correctly when inside the minigame.
  • Players can no longer 'hide' their Skull by using the TzHaar Fight Pit Scrying Orb on High-risk PvP Worlds.
  • Chinchompas have been showing off by strafing, moonwalking or otherwise trick-shotting their way into Box Traps. They should now face towards the trap that they're actually triggering.
  • Potato Cacti pickers rejoice, the Achievement Diary task for scooping five of them now works for Iron players in their alternate version of the Kalphite Queen's chamber.
  • Pending combat damage no longer clears as players go in and out of the cave at Ferox Enclave, or up the lift in the damaged tower. We received reports that this behaviour was disrupting combat on DMM worlds.
  • The in-game Name Change menu now has 'Confirm' written on the confirmation button and will display your chosen name in the 'Status' field instead. We hope this will make things a bit clearer!
  • Ancient Magicks’ Ice spells had previously been given an audio cue and a message to tell their victims when the freeze was about to expire. A similar message and audio cue has now been added to various other holding effects, including Bind, Snare and Entangle.
  • Finally, and arguably most importantly of all: a door in the Ardougne Clocktower has been refitted so that it no longer extends into the roof, saving the structural integrity of this historic and culturally relevant building.
PvP World Rota
The PvP rota has moved to Period A:

  • 539 - (US) - PvP World
  • 548 - (Germany) - High-Risk PvP World
