Conquer the middle ages with historical war game Field of Glory 2: Medieval

Slitherine has released a new tactical war game in its Field of Glory line, covering medieval warfare during the middle ages. Field of Glory II: Medieval is a hard-as-nails turn-based strategy game that lets you command a diverse range of armies, dating from 1040 all the way through to 1270 AD.

This is the stand-alone sequel to Field of Glory II, which was released in 2017. Both are essentially digital adaptations of the classic Field of Glory tabletop game, created by renewed designer Richard Bodley-Scott who leads the development team working on the digital successors.

Field of Glory II: Medieval is all about the details, featuring over 100 fully animated, historically authentic unit models, which can be seen in over 50 army lists drawn from 29 nations that were active during this time period. It features 'campaigns', which will be a string of tactical battles woven together with a core narrative, as well as other modes such as quick battle, custom battles, and individual historical scenarios. Everything is available to play solo - versus a no-nonsense AI - or online multiplayer.

Field of Glory 2: Medieval First Impressions - it sucks to be Feudal Europe

All of a sudden, I want a crossbow for Christmas. Slitherine has just announced that Field of Glory II: Medieval (or for this, FOG2M) will drop on 4 February 2021. Given press code becomes available this week, and I've been busy cleaving heads in the Beta for the past several weeks, believe it or not, I have thoughts.

FOG2M is really the computer version of miniature wargaming legend Richard Bodley Scott's Oath of Fealty army list and companion to FOG tabletop. Both book and computer game cover the Feudal era from 1040 - 1270 AD, but this time the latter is a new stand-alone game and not another FOG2 DLC. Evidently, adjusting the original game's hyper-important POA (Points of Advantage) structure to account for the oddities and nuances of armored knights kerflumping about was far more difficult and less realistic than simply producing a new base game. So, no, you cannot throw Trajan-era Romans against the Teutonic Knights, but I think most folks can live with that.

Because this is a 'first look' article, I will be concentrating on how the game plays. Yes, there are some significant changes in graphics and user interface, and if you want to learn more about the factions and campaigns involved, you can visit our earlier article on the subject for details. Suffice it to say there is not a caltrop's worth of difference in the procedures needed to play the game when compared to the original FOG2.

Field of Glory 2: Medieval releases February 2021

The past month or so has shown that 2021 is going to be a great year for digital wargames, and that's just looking at the Matrix Games/Slitherine line-up. They made a bunch of announcements recently regarding five new games that are coming out, but before that they announced Field of Glory 2: Medieval.

This medieval spin-off to the popular ancients-era turn-based tactical wargame Field of Glory 2 shifts the timeline forward a bit, offering up mechanics, units and army lists suitable for the 11th - 13th centuries. Mainly European focus, but Byzantium are good at doing their research for other areas of the world as well - and now we know the release date.

You'll be able to get your hands on Field of Glory 2: Medieval on February 4, 2021.

This is about when we'd expect, given it was announced a couple of months ago. If you want more information about what it entails, you can read our original report or go to the official store page. This will be released on Steam AND directly via the Matrix Store, though if you buy via the latter you get a free Steam key anyway.
