Call of the Wild: The Angler™ News

Important Development Update

Anglers,

It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the end of development for Call of the Wild: The Angler. The Angler will remain playable both online and offline in its current state, and you’ll still be able to purchase and access the base game and all DLC content across all platforms. The big difference is that there won’t be any new content or updates moving forward.

Our vision with The Angler was to create a fresh take on the fishing sim genre, inspired by our love and passion for fishing and open-world games. It’s given us so much joy seeing your appreciation for the worlds we created and excitement in catching something new with each big update. We wouldn’t have made it these two-and-a-half years if we hadn’t listened very closely to our passionate community, and for that passion, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. However, maintaining the audience size necessary to support the continued development of this ambitious game proved more challenging than expected, so it’s time for the team to move on to other projects.

We understand that this may come as a surprise, and want you to know it was not an easy decision to make. Although the excitement of new content and updates has come to an end, we hope you’ll still enjoy reruns of in-game events and playing online with friends old and new. There’s much to explore in the five reserves as well.

It’s difficult to leave a project that was driven by so much passion, and we’ll always hold it dear, but we’re bringing our experience and expertise to new horizons within Avalanche Studios Group, so please cheer us on! We’re proud to say that our hard work and dedication brought the beauty of fishing (and boatloads of bad fishing puns) to players around the world.

A special shoutout to our moderators, who endured the aftermath of the Gold Green Sunfish and the Carpsucker Hunt of ‘24 (iykyk). And of course, the members of our Player Council, who put countless hours into feedback on updates and making them as good as possible for the rest of the Angler world.

Once again, we want to thank you all for the hours you’ve spent fishing so far, for all the feedback you’ve left us and all the fantastic memories and memes created so far!

Here’s to the great catches we’ve shared and to those that are still to come!
FAQ
What does “end of development” mean?
That we won't make any more content/updates for the game, and that the development team will move on to other projects here at Avalanche. The game will still be available for purchase and all functionality will be kept.

Will multiplayer be affected?
No, multiplayer will continue to be supported.

What happens to the community channels?
Our main social media channels (Facebook, Instagram & X) will still be around and we will post any game related updates there.

The community Discord server will move to a read only format on February the 4th. Most information will still be available on it after that. That said we are of course encouraging you to start up your own servers to continue sharing and chatting about the Angler!

How can I contact you with issues?
While the support offered on Discord will cease, you can still create a support ticket at https://cotwtheangler.com/support.

The Winter Event starts now!
Golden Ridge is ready for the holidays ☃️
Now is your chance to grab exclusive, limited-time cosmetics from last year's Winter Event! Take in the festive atmosphere on Golden Ridge Reserve and deck yourself out with winter gear, available at the souvenir shop for in-game currency only until January 2nd.

Merry Fishmas!

P.S. There's a known issue where it says the Winter Event has "NO LOC" in the Reserve Menu - the location of the event is at the Golden Ridge Reserve Hub.

Steam Awards 2024

Howdy Anglers!

We’d be delighted to get your vote for Steam’s Labor of Love award. Over the last 2+ years of development, we’ve been dedicated to creating the fishing game that you want to play. In that time, we’ve brought you countless new features and squashed loads of bugs by listening closely to your feedback.

From Norway to Spain to South Africa to Japan, our team has strived to bring you an authentic and immersive fishing experience all over the world. Each new reserve has brought new species both big and small and over the years their appearance and animations have only gotten better and better.

You’ve found creative new ways to play, including but not limited to flipping your Ultra Cruiser boats and fishing off the top of them, using boats to bridge over waterfalls, and riding on top of your LakePal bait boats… Okay y’all really like messing with the boats!

Both stylish and truly unsettling outfits can be seen all over the hub with everything from anglerfish masks to pj’s to cowboy boots. The non-bald anglers out there can now wear hats (without becoming balded anglers) and some anglers even take their shoes to run through the grass barefoot (we don’t judge).

We’ve put love into bringing something unique to our Winter, Halloween, and Anniversary events and were excited to see your ghost fish and celebrations together! We’ve improved the multiplayer experience, adding Time of Day matchmaking, so that you can fish whatever time of day you’d like, gave you multiplayer party functionality, and added a match fishing competition-style feature.

With countless features coming out over the past 2 years, the most recent ones have been huge asks from the community. You asked for rod holders and now you got it! We’ve added animations for reeling in your fish before your trophy screen. And last but certainly not least, our latest fish variations feature added MILLIONS of fish and crustacean variations with unique colors, patterns, and scars for each species. It’s extremely unlikely you’ll see the same exact creature twice!

We are incredibly grateful for all of your support over these last couple years and it would mean a lot to get your vote.

Thank you //The Angler Team

Patch 2.1.1 is live!

Hey Anglers!
Patch 2.1.1 is now live!
In this patch we've added the remaining fish variations to the Norway, Spain and South African reserves.
Bug Fixes
• Fixed an issue with the Short Locs hair customisation, it should no longer break when the player is wearing a hat
 • Amemasu hook and bait compatibilities have been changed. We have removed Bloodworm & Eggs, and increased the hook range.
 • Fixed an issue with trophies on PS5.

Patch 2.1.0

Hey Anglers!

Patch 2.1.0 is here and offers some highly requested new features and quality of life improvements.

Rod Holders are now available for all players. You will be able to use two rods in holders in addition to the rod in your hands.

We’re thrilled to see all the different variations of fish you’ve been catching since the last update! The fish variation feature was fully added to Japan and Golden Ridge Reserve to start, but in this patch, you’ll see more variants in Norway, Spain, and South Africa. It’s not all fish, but more!

If you own Japan, you’ll see a new legendary fish each week from now on, with 3 different possibilities! Any guesses? Japan enjoyers can also check out the souvenir shop that has opened with a variety of new cosmetics. Go check it out and say hi to mascot Kumao-kun while you’re at it!

Full Screen Resolution Settings are now more customizable. You can change the resolution in fullscreen mode independent of the monitor resolution. This can help with decreasing memory usage and increasing performance when playing on high resolution monitors.

The days of being bald under all of our hats has come to an end. You will now be able to have hair under your hats!

You can also feel the grass beneath your feet if you so choose. There is a barefoot option in the player customization options.
Bug Fixes

Gear Challenges
• Fixed an issue that prevented you from using liver bait to catch an Eel in the bronze rank Eel Challenge.
 • Fixed an issue that prevented you from progressing past the Gold stage for the Ayu Sweetfish Fish Quest due to a lure requirement.
Gameplay
• Japan Lookout Towers will now show undiscovered locations to the players during the survey animation.
 • Fixed an issue where the Cherry Salmon, Sakhalin Taimen, and Amur Catfish were showing a selection of incompatible baits in their “Bait and Lure Preferences”.
Water
• Fixed some issues with water physics in Japan.
UI
• Corrected the thumbnails for the Kitay Reel and Kikir Lure. They should no longer look squished!
 • Fixed an issue where the Japan Reserve Logo would sometimes corrupt when loading into Japan.
 • We’ve updated our text localization for missing character fonts and truncation issues.
Visuals
• Listening to your feedback, we have updated and tweaked a bunch of fish variations to be more realistic.
 • Fixed an issue where shadows would act a bit odd in certain situations.
 • Made some changes to the reward screen poses.
 • Tidied up a bunch of clipping and object placement issues.
