Blood, Life, Trust & Grace

Oh mighty Tlatoani!

In this devlog, Chris (Lead Developer) dives into one of the core themes of Aztecs: The Last Sun - survival. From the very start, the game was designed around three main pillars: blood, life, and trust & grace.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Blood is the key to enduring the night, as the Moon Goddess threatens to consume your city. At the same time, you must care for your people’s needs - water, housing, and food – or face sickness and death. Finally, your choices as Tlatoani will shape the trust of your people and the favor of the gods. Lose either, and chaos will follow.

Aztecs: The Last Sun is not a typical city-builder - survival comes first. Will you rise to become the greatest Tlatoani, or will your city fall to the night?

The Importance of Terraforming

Oh mighty Tlatoani!

Terraforming isn’t just about aesthetics - it’s about strategy. Every change you make affects your city’s growth, resources, and ability to withstand the challenges ahead. The land is both your ally and your greatest obstacle. With our terraforming tools, you can raise the ground, carve channels to guide precious rivers, and prepare fertile soil for the ancient art of chinampa farming.

Water in Aztecs: The Last Sun is life itself - flowing not only to keep your people clean through vital sanitation, but also to feed the floating gardens that sustain your city. Every decision to shift the earth or redirect a stream carries weight, for the balance between survival and disaster is delicate.

Important Update

Oh mighty Tlatoani!

We will keep it short this time:
Aztecs: The Last Sun will be delayed by a couple of weeks and now start into Early Access September 23rd.

We want to ensure that you're playing the best possible version of the game, so we will have to take some additional time to incorporate your feedback from the demo, and our closed beta tests, to get everything right. Also, there will be more polished localization in place for all supported languages.

Thanks for your understanding!

Economy Under the Hood – Trade & Currency Systems

Oh mighty Tlatoani!

Today we’re diving deep into the economic foundations of Aztecs: The Last Sun, peeling back the layers of how your empire thrives - or falls - through its intricate trade and currency systems. From the humblest cocoa bean to the rare glint of obsidian, every resource has a story and a strategic role to play.
Cocoa Beans: The Currency of Civilization
Cocoa beans serve as the game’s main currency. Collected daily from your residents as taxes (with higher yields from upgraded houses), cocoa is essential for key actions like building Roads, which are vital for worker movement and city layout.

Managing your cocoa reserves carefully is critical, especially as demands grow with city expansion and production needs.
Obsidian: Rare & Powerful
Obsidian is a rare and valuable resource, found in limited locations across the Valley of Mexico. Its primary use is in constructing Blood Beacons, which expand the Blood Zone - unlocking new land for farming, building, and resource collection.

Obsidian can also be purchased through the Marketplace, but it comes at a high price. Use it strategically to fuel expansion at key moments.
Trade Routes: Expanding Horizons
As you explore the Valley of Mexico, you’ll encounter other cities and civilizations. These are not just scenic backdrops - they’re trade partners waiting to be connected.

To trade, you must first complete exploration of a location and construct a Port module, unlocked via technology. Once established, trade routes open up opportunities to acquire:

 • Captives for sacrificial rituals,
 • Raw Food to support your growing population,
 • A variety of materials otherwise inaccessible.
Marketplace Dynamics: Supply, Demand, Survival
Unlocked through research, the Marketplace lets you trade one resource for another - cocoa for wood, stone for planks, and even obsidian (at a steep cost). It’s a great way to stay balanced during shortages.
Balance is Everything
Resources are either raw (from outposts) or refined (from workshops). Both are vital for survival, building, and progression. Resource streams near your city are limited, so expansion and steady trade are crucial.

Keep your economy flowing, use trade smartly, and never run out of cocoa. The survival of your empire depends on it.
