The creation of a priest

Good day, Mictlantecs!

Today, we present to you the WIP of the priest that will give you glimpses of the future through your adventure on Mictlan.

His design is completely based on fantasy. His clothing features a distinctive headdress and some bone accessories, which give him an imposing appearance.

During the pre-Columbian era, priests thought of themselves as an extension of nature, so gaining worldly knowledge allowed each of them to better understand who they were, and vice versa.

History tells us that the Spanish were deeply afraid of them, mostly because of their rituals, where they would perform piercings and cuts on different parts of the body.

It is a long process of development from the concept art to the final realization of a character: in this case, it started from our talented artist marioricoart, assisted by our chief historian, Santiago, continuing through our talented 3D team and our artist Genaro, and finally going through the hands of our creative director Guillermo Alarcon , sculpting his face.

So, dear followers, what do you think of this character?

One of our fans as a Tlamacazqui

If you wonder about the style that the clergy of Mexica society had… you can see in this WIP!

In this 3D model and in this sketch you can see a tlamacazqui, a young priest of the Aztec religion, wearing traditional clothes.

The main component of this outfit was the xiocolli: an open, sleeveless jacket, tied on the top part, and usually made of cotton. Priests also wore their hair long, and wore face paint.

This NPC was designed specifically for one of our fans, it's not just an honor to be able to integrate our community into the development of our characters, but also it helps our indie studio tremendously thanks to your financial support!

What about you, have you already made decision to become an NPC inside our game?

Chapel dedicated to the god Ehecatl

Here’s a new WIP modeled for you, travelers of Mictlan.

It was common for ancient highly urbanized areas in Mesoamerica to be divided into several Calpullis (or districts) where entire families, dedicated to a specific trade or craft, lived.
These districts had access to all available services of the time, and had their own temples as well.

According to the economic capabilities of the inhabitants, these temples could be as luxurious as the massive ceremonial centers of the nobles and the ruling class, or simple and modest, like the ones on the macehualtin districts. In the case of this WIP, the temple is a chapel dedicated to the god Ehecatl, which features a round building, and a basement for mortuary niches. Small details like these make a difference in our work.

Statue: god Xiuhtecuhtli

Have a good day, community of Mictlan.

Today, we have this WIP of a stone statue of the god Xiuhtecuhtli.
Considered as the “Father of the Gods”, Xiuhtecuhtli was the god of fire, daytime and heat, as well as Lord of volcanoes in Aztec mythology.
Stone statues of this deity, which commonly showed him sitting down, with his arms crossed and wearing a bifurcated headdress, were buried as an offering.
Because of that, many of these statues have been found in the excavation zone of the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan.

We are launching our Kickstarter campaign soon! (have you registered yet? It only takes a minute!)

Testing our chatacters for cutscenes

Here are few tests we are making for certain cinematic characters we are currently working on.

What you're seeing in this test is one of our NPCs that are made for cut-scenes, but it's not easy at all, implementing high-res characters for cut-scenes with closeups as it lowers FPS performance, so we are testing various optimization methods without sacrificing the quality and performance of the GPU and CPU.

It is very important for us to obtain high-quality results while maintaining a good FPS, that is when the magic of the developer studio happen in since there is no exact formula to do this, and it is something that we have been working on for the last 4 months doing tests of optimization to our demo gameplay that we wanted to present with Fedelobo a few months ago.

We prefer to take the time to continue optimizing our levels and characters, which so far thanks to the hard work of our team we have been able to have very favorable results, somewhat monumental for small studios like ours with a low budget.

Legends, myths, facts, history: Mictlan has it all! We're aiming at including in our game the most incredible stories, and we will continue updating you with news, concept arts, sneak&peeks of our creative process, so make sure to follow us on our social media channels to stay updated!
