Macuiltotchtli: character development

In our Mictlan team, we work every single day to preserve the historical context and faithfulness, without losing the fantastic nature that characterizes our game.
The design of this version of Macuiltotchtli (god of day 5) presents a character with a yellow eye-band.
These pleasure/punishment deities can be found in Codex Borgia wearing decorations mostly associated with warriors and sacrifices.
The intoxication and blood loss due to autosacrifice induced Macuiltotchtli into an altered state of mind, the adrenaline shock and his erratic movements make him a very dangerous enemy.

The seventh omen: a mythical bird

Did you know that the seventh and penultimate omen of the fall of Tenochtitan was a bird with a mirror on its head?

This omen was witnessed by Moctezuma II himself, and the chronicles tell of his encounter with this strange being, a harbinger of the gods to warn him of the final fall.

“Something was caught in the nets. The hunters caught a certain ashen bird like a crane. Then they went to show it to Motecuhzoma, at the House of Black (the house of magical studies). The Sun had reached its highest point: it was midday. There was something similar to a mirror on the bird's head: it was as if it had a perforation on its middle point.
That night, people could see the sky, the stars, the Mastelejo (comet). Motecuhzoma interpreted this as a bad omen. Then, when he looked at the bird’s head a second time, he saw in the background something that looked like a group of people who were running, in a rush, shoving each other. They fought among themselves and were carried by some kind of deers. In that instant, Motecuhzoma called his wizards, his sages. He said to them: "What have I seen?" The sages were searching for an answer, tried to see something. But everything was gone, they saw nothing.”

For this WIP we present to you this mythical bird, but in place of a simple obsidian mirror on the top of its head, we chose to place a broken obsidian crystal, where those ominous visions would be reflected, heightening the supernatural features of this bird.

The Jaguar Warlock

The jaguar was one of the most worshipped beings, not only by the Mexica but also by almost all of the Mesoamerica people. It was said that those who were born on the day of "océlotl" would be the best at war, that they would show their courage and strength.

It is also claimed that there were people who were capable of transforming into the powerful felines, who could acquire superhuman strength and knowledge.

With this inspiration and stories in mind, our artists have created this fantastic concept of the Jaguar Warlock, a character who expresses all of his power through the fur clothing with the characteristic spotted design of the jaguar, but who also has a mystical aura, like the jaguar himself, lord of all animals.

We have not yet defined his powers or abilities, but perhaps you, community of Mictlán can help us. What else would you like to see about this character?

He will surely be a very powerful ally or... enemy.

Tzizimine: a video of our 3D character

The mythical world of Mictlan is wide and it includes deities that could terrify anyone just with their aspect…

Such is the case of the Tzizimine (take a look at our previous concept art).

Women-like creatures, with rotten, decaying flesh which reveal the skeleton underneath, with clawed hands and feet, wearing ornaments made of skull necklaces and human hearts.

The Tzizimine are nocturnal deities whose purpose was to devour human beings at the end of the Fifth Sun. They would descend from the sky at night and stalk the little kids to kidnap them. They would also appear during the eclipses to eat the sun and swallow the entire humanity.

Our ambitious goal is to create at least over 200 characters in the span of 3-4 years, until now we've made over 70 characters to populate our vast open world as it was seen during the 16th Century.
We are preparing a docu-series showing an in-depth analysis of some of our favorite and key characters you'll be meeting in Mictlan.

The final attack on Tenochtitlan

The final attack on Tenochtitlan was carried by the joint actions on the roadways with the support of brigs, for which the Mexica canoes were no match. Little by little, the Spanish army, empowered by a growing number of allies, enclosed the brave Mexica, who were still capable of causing a lot of damage before their surrender, caused by a combination of superior weaponry by the Spanish and devastating diseases which had been spread.

August 13th of 1521, after a siege that lasted over 2 months, the city was besieged and the last emperor, Cuahutemoc, was captured as he tried to make his escape aboard a canoe.

Cortés’s victory destroyed the Aztec empire, and the Spanish began to consolidate control over what became the colony of New Spain.
