Mictlan: An Ancient Mythical Tale News

The road so far...

It might sound corny, but you have no idea how blessed and proud I feel to have embarked on this amazing journey to create Mictlan: An Ancient Mythical Tale.

Recreating part of our history, celebrating ancestral cultures, reviving thousand-year-old tales in a video game, it is truly a dream come true, something I've been fantasizing about since childhood.

Many years later, I find myself living the dream, working with a talented team of archaeologists, anthropologists, concept artists, 3D designers and my marketing team, all of us riding on this train, moving along, reaching Mictlan.

We have been working for months without rest. We are tired, but we love what we're doing. The need, the love, the aspiration to create the first open-world video game revolving around the Mesoamerican culture and the ancient people of Mexico, is the gasoline that keeps us going everyday, encouraging us to pour everything we have in this project.

I would like to thank my amazing Mictlan team, without them I would not have been able to get to where we are. We have achieved so much in so little time, but still, the road is long and we still have another 2 or 3 years of development to go. I'm sure that tears will be shed, tears of frustration and happiness, but it will all be worth it.

We believe in Mictlan and I want to personally thank all of you, in our community, who have been following us since the beginning. We're not just a community anymore, we've become a family which is continuing to expand. We are inspired and have inspired other developers as well, changing, in a way, the ecosystem of the video game industry.

I can't wait to see what else awaits us, but we'll find out together!

Once again a sincere thank you, to all of you, the Mictlan team, our ancestors, and the legacy that our grandparents left us.

Sincerely,

Guillermo Alarcon
Creative Director Mictlan

Creating realistic characters

An old scar showing on the cheek, fine wrinkles around the eyes, signs of time showing on the sun-exposed skin.

These are some of the details we're working on to create realistic characters in Mictlan, details which will make every character unique, details which will reveal their life story.

Take a look at this WIP to have an idea of the work behind the process of creating hyper realistic characters.

The great market of Tlatelolco

The great market of Tlatelolco was one of the largest commercial exchange centers of ancient Mexico before the European conquest. It was founded alongside the city of Tlatelolco in the year 1337, and for a time it rivaled its neighbor and twin city, Tenochtitlan, until it was conquered by Mexica Tlatoani Axayacatl in the year 1473.

Since then, it became a very important commercial center, where people from the basin of the Valley of Mexico traded intensely, and merchants arrived continuously from all corners of Mesoamerica to exchange their products.

The level of organization and variety of products was such that it astonished the Spanish conquerors.

Hernán Cortés, in one of his letters, wrote about the market:
[h3]
This city has many public squares where there is continuous trading, buying and selling. There is another square – twice as big the city of Salamanca – even surrounded by portals, where every day there are over sixty thousand souls buying and selling….

Take a look at the concept art by Josue Diaz, a talented artist from our team, of the great market of Tlatelolco which we are recreating in Mictlan, bringing to life this key location for exchanging goods in ancient Mexica civilization.
