Dev Diary #2: Story, open world and The Transformed

Greetings, detectives!

We continue to keep a development diary of Outbreak Island, a detective survival simulator. Today we’d like to tell you about our work on the story campaign, elaboration of the open world, restricted locations and development of the local population — the Transformed.
Story
There’ll be two game modes in Outbreak Island: story campaign and free survival. For now, we’ve finished working on the main storyline and started developing the side quests, as well as writing the script for the characters’ VO. We plan to involve professional actors to make OI characters truly alive and emotional.

Read an excerpt from the main character's diary to plunge into the atmosphere of exploration, detective and survival.

This is an unfamiliar solitude. As if the only connection with the real world has been lost. However, self-reflection has never been a part of my nature — I’ll keep on exploring this goddamn island at first light. Nothing remarkable has been spotted in the forest so far. Except for animals going crazy. Wolves are usually not so aggressive, and that bear... was it even a bear or something different? And since when do bears leave traces that are visible under ultraviolet light? I should find the locals quickly and discover what is going on here.

In Outbreak Island, you’ll have to explore a large island with an area of more than XXX square kilometres. Throughout your journey, you will wander through forests, explore caves, climb hills and even sheer cliffs. In addition to wildlife, the island also has civilization. For instance, a small town, farms, and an abandoned church. Besides, you will have to go down to the underground labs to advance along the story and solve this case. Look at how we are gradually improving the environment in Outbreak Island:

Initially, the detective was opposed by zombies in the plot concept. We decided to deviate from the common idea of the zombie apocalypse and do something new instead. Feast your eyes on the Transformed concept art. They didn't die to be resurrected and eat brains afterward. They are still living people, yet something terrible happened to them. The Transformed are not aware of the reality and are quite aggressive. It's up to you to sneak past them, distract the Transformed with the camera flash remotely, attack them from behind or head-on. However, keep in mind that, firstly, these are still living people indeed. Secondly, they are truly dangerous, and the main character is a common man with no prior combat training. Moreover, you’re constantly running short of ammo.

We’ll tell you more about the Transformed in the next development diaries, but for now, check out their concept art:

In the next development diaries, we’ll talk about survival in Outbreak Island: what items will help you in your difficult task, how they are made, repaired, and whether it’s possible to build a house on this mad island.
