Outbreak Island Demo Announcement

Hey Detectives!

Outbreak Island will be participating in the upcoming Steam Next Fest, October 1-7. This means that during the festival everyone will be able to download the new demo and play OI!
Demo with plot
Rather than simply demonstrating the gameplay and gameplay mechanics, we decided to make your walkthrough as interesting and detective as possible. And that means that the demo version will contain a fragment of the story from the Outbreak Island story campaign!

In the demo, you’ll play as Howard Chapman trying to get out of a mysterious underground laboratory. Use your camera and flash to find all the evidence and escape the insane human test subjects. Learn the tragic story of the head of the laboratory, who became a victim of his own research. Eat, drink, heal wounds, look for resources, craft tools and weapons on the go — do everything you can to survive and reach the surface.
Different gameplay on each floor
The laboratory will consist of four completely different floors. On one of those floors players will have to act as stealthily as possible, on the other — try to survive in the pitch-darkness, and on the next one — solve the mystery of experiments and find evidence.

Devlog #3: crafting, a dangerous enemy, and a new environment

Greetings, detectives!

We continue to keep a development diary of Outbreak Island, a detective survival simulator. Today we would like to tell you about the creation of useful items, show you the sights of the island, and introduce you to one of the most dangerous inhabitants of this place.
Crafting
Throughout your journey in Outbreak Island, you can not only find useful items, but also make them yourself. For example, the first aid kit. The local military once had a large stock of medicines, but over time some of them have fallen into disrepair. Medical supplies in Outbreak Island can be found at army posts, in laboratories and in the abandoned city. If the search is unsuccessful, a first aid kit can be made from found bandages and alcohol.

You can craft a first aid kit on the go perhaps, but there will be problems with cooking. In Outbreak Island, food is the key to good health! With the help of the campfire and found mushrooms, berries and minced meat you can cook some food.

Crafting occupies an important place in Outbreak Island gameplay. Crafted items will help you survive, gain an advantage in combat, as well as solve a case.

Please note that the game's UI is under development and the screenshots/videos above are not the final version.
The Transformed
Check out the final concept art for one of the Transformed in Outbreak Island. It's much bigger and more dangerous than the others.
The Environment
We continue to improve the environment in the open world. We decided to remove the foliage to improve the optimization. This makes the game even more atmospheric and sometimes even scarier.
In future episodes…
In the following development diaries, we will talk more about the main game mechanic of Outbreak Island — the use of the camera for survival.

Dev Diary #2: Story, open world and The Transformed

Greetings, detectives!

We continue to keep a development diary of Outbreak Island, a detective survival simulator. Today we’d like to tell you about our work on the story campaign, elaboration of the open world, restricted locations and development of the local population — the Transformed.
Story
There’ll be two game modes in Outbreak Island: story campaign and free survival. For now, we’ve finished working on the main storyline and started developing the side quests, as well as writing the script for the characters’ VO. We plan to involve professional actors to make OI characters truly alive and emotional.

Read an excerpt from the main character's diary to plunge into the atmosphere of exploration, detective and survival.

This is an unfamiliar solitude. As if the only connection with the real world has been lost. However, self-reflection has never been a part of my nature — I’ll keep on exploring this goddamn island at first light. Nothing remarkable has been spotted in the forest so far. Except for animals going crazy. Wolves are usually not so aggressive, and that bear... was it even a bear or something different? And since when do bears leave traces that are visible under ultraviolet light? I should find the locals quickly and discover what is going on here.
Open world
In Outbreak Island, you’ll have to explore a large island with an area of more than XXX square kilometres. Throughout your journey, you will wander through forests, explore caves, climb hills and even sheer cliffs. In addition to wildlife, the island also has civilization. For instance, a small town, farms, and an abandoned church. Besides, you will have to go down to the underground labs to advance along the story and solve this case. Look at how we are gradually improving the environment in Outbreak Island:
The Transformed
Initially, the detective was opposed by zombies in the plot concept. We decided to deviate from the common idea of the zombie apocalypse and do something new instead. Feast your eyes on the Transformed concept art. They didn't die to be resurrected and eat brains afterward. They are still living people, yet something terrible happened to them. The Transformed are not aware of the reality and are quite aggressive. It's up to you to sneak past them, distract the Transformed with the camera flash remotely, attack them from behind or head-on. However, keep in mind that, firstly, these are still living people indeed. Secondly, they are truly dangerous, and the main character is a common man with no prior combat training. Moreover, you’re constantly running short of ammo.

We’ll tell you more about the Transformed in the next development diaries, but for now, check out their concept art:
In future episodes…
In the next development diaries, we’ll talk about survival in Outbreak Island: what items will help you in your difficult task, how they are made, repaired, and whether it’s possible to build a house on this mad island.

Outbreak Island — Dev Diary #1

Hello everyone!

My name is Egis and together with my wife, I am developing Outbreak Island, an open-world detective survival simulator. We like games of this genre, so we decided to make our own :) This is our first project as the Tiny Magicians team, although I have a few finished games in my portfolio. So far Outbreak Island is the biggest project in my career, and I am sure that you will like this game. In addition, thanks to the support of the publisher HypeTrain Digital we have engaged professional developers.

Today we want to tell you more about Outbreak Island and its creation.

We are developing the game on Unreal Engine 4. Outbreak Island will have a story mode and a survival mode. The world of OI will be constantly changing - weather, time of day and unexpected encounters with local inhabitants will create unique situations and provide unpredictable gameplay.

Taking on the role of Robert Chapman, you arrive on a mysterious island to investigate a missing person case. Due to a storm, you are cut from the outside world. So you must survive on the island, solve the case, find a way to escape or you might end up staying here forever.

Right now we're working on the dialogue script so we can get professional voice actors. We're also working on the quests and deepening the Outbreak Island lore.

The detective feels thirsty and hungry. He might get tired or injured from a fall, an encounter with wild animals or... something else entirely. To survive, you will have to scavenge for food, medicine and other supplies. Whether you hunt or be preyed upon is up to your survival skills.

Camera is your main tool of survival. Distract the infected with Camera's flash. Access your camera remotely and study the behaviour of the locals. Take pictures of anything suspicious to get clues and investigate the disaster.

Uncover the secrets of an uncharted island. There is an abandoned town, farms, and even electricity. Where did it come from? And where did the local population go?

Keep yourself safe with handmade traps, shelter, useful equipment, and weapons.

Add Outbreak Island to your Wishlist and join our Discord and Twitter! We'll be posting dev diaries every month and showing the development progress. For now, Outbreak Island is scheduled to release in Early Access in Q3 2021.
