DD# 212 The Lucifer Within Us, Part I
Hi, everyone. Welcome to the developer's diary on Valentine's Day.
The game has already automatically set up some seasonal content based on your local system time. There is delicious chocolate, heart-shaped balloons, and lovely double beds. Have fun before we dive into something much darker.
This week's main content update focuses on a revisit to the Grand Library. How didn't the Floor of Religion fall? How did those nuns get corrupted? Who is the Killer Monk? Why is there a sloth demon on this floor? Many questions were left unanswered previously.
Some questions have been answered in this week's updates.
You can now find the librarian's room on this floor with various documents on a computer describing the events that happened before and during the attack on the library. You can also find another new section of this floor with a very gruesome scene. (OK, because this game is R14 to R16, depending on global rating standards. It's not that gruesome. But you get the idea.) There are some corpses and tomato juice everywhere there. But, on the good side, you can also get some more clues and loot.
After piecing together everything, you may know more about how the traitor of the library engineered the falling of this floor, even under the circumstance that it was heavily guarded by agents from various factions. The corrupted nuns, the sloth demon, and the Killer Monk are all the outcomes of this catastrophic event.
However, in order not to spoil too much about the story. Let's talk about the background of the story instead. Have you ever wondered how sometimes good people can do horrific or even diabolical things? It's not about seemly friendly neighborhood villagers burning "witches" in medieval. It's not about the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution, where revolutionaries executed each other by Guillotine. It's not about the best minds of Germany having a calm discussion on how to systemically genocide Jews during the Wannseekonferenz. It's not about lovers; parents and children report each other to get them purged by Stalin. It's not about the red army committing mass rape when they got into Berlin.
Maybe it's about all of them. But it's more about what is happening right now in this world.
Multiple wars have broken out and are ongoing right now.
Horrific war crimes have been committed all across the war zones.
People are doing callous things to each other beyond everyone's imagination.
Other than those hot wars, other types of wars are getting more extreme. You can now see people threaten to jail each other because of different political views. You can now see people trying to censor others just because they can easily get mad at disagreements. You can now see the rise of that both horrific and hilarious "cancel" culture. Back in 2012, you could not imagine Obama's supporters would want to send Romney's supporters to re-education camps.
Those are all happening right now instead of some faded memories of the world from more than 80 years ago. However, except for very few people, I don't think all those behind those actions are born evil with a strong desire to harm other human beings. In a different situation, they may just be another person with their own virtues. (Admitting this is important to avoid falling into a trap that they may have fallen into.)
During the game's story, we will explore the motivation behind some of those atrocities committed by "common people." Depending on different perspectives, we will then explore how to counter or exploit this. (After all, it's ultimately your choice how to use knowledge.)
Of course, a new story requires new characters.
So, here we go:
Other than the updates in the Grand Library, we also have some other content:
Certain tenets of your customized faith can now affect the local environment if you have some influence in those locations. For example, if your faith has "cat worship," you may motivate more people to love cats and consequently see more cats on the street.
In Siberia, Rasputin also gained some content. He can now heal you for free and tell you some information about the story's direction. (Some players from the SAPC++ era may recognize those names.)
In Liu, random people on the street may now have some reaction if Trump is in your group.
After all, it's quite unrealistic if people in China see someone who looks like Trump and has no reaction at all. (At least, I know when Gabe visited Shanghai, he got "harassed" by many people who passed by and recognized him.)
Most people in China have a relatively positive impression of Trump for various reasons.
Some like him because he is "funny,"
Some like him because his speech is encouraging.
Some like him because he is "more human" than other politicians.
Some like him because he will likely push Europe or other political factions to become more independent from the US and grow stronger so that the US will not be the only superpower in the world. (It's simply too risky if one nation can dominate the fate of the world, isn't it? Maybe we can still fix this and have some diversity in the power distribution by forcing people into action.)
Some like him because there are not enough choices. (Unlike many nations in the world, the US has only two parties. People can either be left or right, one or another; no wonder things get extreme. )
If you had to choose between Stalin and Hitler, which one would you choose? Many European nations faced this question in WW2. Will you blame Finland for working with Hitler? Will you blame the Baltic for bowing to Stalin?
This is not an argument about whether this is right or wrong or whether the reasons various people give are convincing. It is something for everyone's own self-discovery and growth. Everyone can agree or disagree on different things. (You technically can even kill all those random citizens on the street if you really want to. But, will you?) After all, what is important is that everyone can make their own decision to be themselves without being compromised. Just like this game is yours to play, and it has a focus on freedom of choice when engaging in various activities.

A political survey has been launched so that everyone in this community can freely express their ideas on different matters. All answers will be kept secret, and no personal information will be collected, but they may affect what happens next in the game. (None of the reasons why people like Trump is from this survey. They are all from something much older, back in 2016.) You can also edit your previous vote in case things change. The survey will stay open till the end of February. Thanks to everyone who has already participated. Most of the questions have very diverse answers. They are all very helpful in letting me learn from your different perspectives. This is an important way to avoid extremism.
That's for this week. The journey of revisiting the Grand Library has just begun. It may not be a happy story, but hopefully, it will be meaningful.
