Research Desks are considered Staple Appliances unless you own one. This means they're more likely to appear in your daily blueprint post and can't be rerolled unless you own one.
Putting a Research Desk inside your first Blueprint Cabinet means you'll have a much higher chance of getting another one the next day.

There are two main strategies associated with the research desk. Either turn your first Research Desk Blueprint into a Blueprint Desk and use it to lock in more Research Desk Blueprints, or turn it into a Copy Desk and throw out your Research Desk to increase your chances of getting another in the average post.
Try only to use the Booking Desk once you have a Blueprint Desk once you lock in your order since Blueprint Desks will cycle throughout the game day, and using the Booking Desk speeds up the day so that the Desk will cycle less.
There are appliances in the game that can automate almost any process, so play around with them until you figure out what works and doesn't.
Some processes are not automatable, but that's okay; if you have the extra hands, manual cooking or cleaning is faster and more space efficient than automation for some processes.

Some Mains are more straightforward to automate than others, which often correlates with the customer increase or decrease attached to the Main Card.
Taking extra Recipe Cards will require additional or more complex automation systems. However, taking Customer Cards can allow you to focus on automating as much as you can of the Main you start the game with.
Full automation is possible, but you must slowly work up to it. Start by automating one process at a time and gradually build up a system throughout the run.

With the Workshop just coming out of Beta, check out some mods created by community members that can make automation easier for when you're learning!
