The British 2nd Infantry Division

Hello!

As teased in last week’s blog post about the upcoming SUCHET milestone, two new divisions will make their way to WARNO.

The first one we detail today. Let’s welcome to the stage the British 2nd Infantry Division!
The Brits return
All right, at ease chaps. The mighty tank fist of the British 1st Armored Division is already in the game. Now it is time for their comrade-in-arms of the 2nd Infantry Division to join them on the battlefield.

The formation’s history dates back to the Napoleonic wars, and the 2nd Infantry Division even has the claim to fame of having fought at Waterloo in 1815. After many battles, ranging from the Second Boer War to World War I and World War II, where the division saw action in Burma against Japanese forces, the 2nd Infantry Division found itself on occupational duties in northwest Germany.

Once again, the formation underwent many rounds of restructuring, going from the 2nd Armoured Division to the 2nd Infantry Division in the early 1980s. The division was also assigned to the British Army on the Rhine (aka BAOR), the permanent British Army’s presence in West Germany. However, instead of being based in NORTHAG itself, the soldiers of the division found themselves in England, lightly equipped so that in case of war, they could deploy quickly overseas to reinforce I. British Corps.

The 2nd Infantry Division had a table of organization and equipment that, in true British fashion, did not resemble the official TO&E at all. For instance, the formation had one regular infantry brigade backed up by two territorial (reservist) brigades and even one engineer brigade.
The 2nd Infantry Division in detail
After a major overhaul in the early 80s, the 2nd Infantry Division had its sole regular infantry brigade converted to an airmobile one. What this means in WARNO is that the 2nd Infantry Division will field no regular Rifles infantry of its own, but either Airmobile troops or Terrier (Territorial reservist) infantry. The engineer forces, in turn, will come as Terrier Engineers.

Terrier squads are organized along the same line as their Army counterparts, but the reservists haven’t transitioned yet to the L85/L86 family of assault rifles. Instead, these troops retain the old L1A1 SLR battle rifles, L7A2 (and sometimes even old L4A4 Bren) machine guns and Carl Gustav recoilless rifles. These territorial units are veterancy-locked to level 1.

Looking at the rest of the arsenal of the 2nd Infantry Division, in terms of equipment, it is rather light. No FV432, Warrior IFVs, or even an organic tank detachment. The sole armored vehicles are Ferret, FV721 Fox and Saxon wheeled APCs.

However, it could count on some armored support from the 3rd Armored Division, I British Corps' reserve formation, which would detach brigades or even regiments in times of war. In historical precedence, during NATO exercise Lionheart in 1984, the 2nd Infantry Division also received the Heimatschutzbrigade 53, a German reserve armored unit, to bolster its forces. With a full-blown Warsaw Pact invasion, as depicted in WARNO, it is safe to assume this will happen again.

So, while being very light, the 2nd Infantry Division is also very mobile. Terriers can only deploy in trucks, but almost a quarter of the infantry will be Airmobile troops, deployable in either a fast Saxon APC or Lynx helicopter. Additionally, the formation has a ton of Territorial anti-aircraft units, resulting - without a doubt - in NATO’s division in West Germany with the most anti-air defenses systems!
What to expect in-game
Let’s look at the 2nd Infantry Division, category by category.

  • LOG - Includes the same Rover CP, and Bedford and Chinook supply vehicles as the 1st Armoured Division. On top of this, you can also deploy a Gazelle CP command helicopter, as well as a M577 armored CV, courtesy of the attached West Germans.
  • INF - A very generous category, with a wide selection of Airmobile units (vanilla, command and support versions) deployable in Saxon APCs and Lynx helicopters. Next up are Terriers squads, which once more are featured in general, command, anti-tank, and support variants, as well as Engineers squads, which are mostly Territorials but also come as command and regular variants. These squads can be brought to the battlefield either in a Bedford truck or Rover jeep.
  • Continuing with the INF category. West German Jäger squads (regular and command), coming in Unimog trucks or M113A1G APCs, can be fielded. And, thanks to the 3rd Armored Division, there is a single card of Arm. Rifles in a Warrior IFV. Support squads include Wombat RCL, Milan 1 (Territorials, so only in Rover jeeps) and Milan 2 ATGM squads (Airmobile, so in a Lynx or Saxon). The West Germans furthermore provide Heimatschützen militia, while RMP military police keep an eye on the rabble. Cherry on the cake are SAS commandos, in a combat role, with their (now WRD classic) loadout of AT-4 and Stinger missiles.
  • ART - The artillery forces present are light in numbers, with the 81mm Mortar, the towed L118 105mm and L121 155mm howitzers, as well as a few self-propelled M107A2 175mm lend from I British Corps. The Bundeswehr provides some additional Tampella 120mm heavy mortars.

  • TANKS - An average number of slots that rapidly rise in cost. With no organic tank formation, the 2nd Infantry Division gets its tanks from two other sources. A few Challengers come courtesy of the 3rd Armored Division, while the Germans provide the more numerous M48A2GA2. Other vehicles include German Iltis Milan and British Rover Milan 2.
  • RECO - Not the divisions’ best category with infantry Scouts, and only Ferret and FV721 Fox recon vehicles. Jäger Auflk. in Aufkl. M113A1G can also be deployed.
  • AA - One of the 2nd Infantry Division’s most formidable categories with lots of cheap options and slots. You get Blowpipe, Javelin, Javelin LML and Tracker Rapier units, as well as towed Rapier AA systems.

  • HEL - More and cheaper slots compared to the 1st Armoured Division, thanks to its airmobile brigade, but with the same units deployable: Gazelle Ah. 1 RKT and two variants of the Lynx HELARM.
  • AIR - An average category, with several new loadouts for Harrier and Jaguar planes, and including the Phantom F.3 fighter.

The 2nd Infantry Division is light and mobile and not meant to engage the opponent in head-on encounters. Rather, its airmobile component allows for fast strike missions and rapid movement. The few heavy tanks provide an anchor for varied infantry and light tank forces to outmaneuver slower enemies. Add on top the heliborne and AA defenses, and the 2nd Infantry Division is an agile and versatile formation, flexible on the battlefield.

Next Up, Suchet ... and more!

Hello commander!

With the recent drop of our latest milestone, BESSIERES, the time has come to look at the new major update making its way to WARNO: SUCHET.

The SUCHET update is currently the last planned milestone that will bring divisions to the game. But next to two new divisions, there are also planning a host of improvements, new features, updates, and other changes. Some might be released before, with, or after the SUCHET update!

Let us lift a tip of the veil.
First things first
Before we continue, a quick introduction on the name of the milestone, SUCHET. Each major WARNO update is named after a French marshal active during the Napoleonic wars. Louis-Gabriel Suchet was noticeable for gaining his marshal bâton in Spain, that place where other French generals and commanders went, and left their reputation in disgrace behind.

Like the other marshals before him, Suchet rapidly rose in the ranks thanks to his military abilities. Though after initial gains, he found himself stuck in a dead-end assignment with little hope of advancement when he encountered Napoleon by chance in Venice. The young lieutenant colonel was surprisingly promoted on the spot. After continued service in Italy, he achieved his reputation during the battles of 1805 and 1806 before being ordered to Spain.

There, Suchet invented the concept of modern counter-insurgency, understanding that to triumph over the guerilla, you need to win the hearts and minds of the local population. He was named marshal after the Siege of Tarragona before ultimately being forced out of Spain in 1814.

Louis-Gabriel Suchet was, with Lannes, Davout, and Gouvion Saint-Cyr, one of the few marshals whom Napoléon could leave to operate on their own. He died of natural causes in 1826.
What can you expect from SUCHET
Of course, you are clamoring to know more about the two new divisions brought to you by SUCHET, but right now, we will keep it to a tease. Two new divisions, with one being French and the other British. More news to follow next week!
What else?
We can talk about some other elements and features coming around or with the next milestone. Some might drop beforehand. For instance:

Multiplayer
  • HMG (Heavy Machine Gun) teams will be introduced as infantry support units. These HMG teams will be featured on tripods, the same as recoilless rifles currently in-game. Some systems include the 7,62mm M60 and the 12,7mm NSV, but we will also extend it to automatic grenade launchers, including the AGS-17 and Mk.19. These new units will be added to all divisions.
  • Amphibious capacity will be added to those vehicles equipped to do so. Better keep an eye out on those rivers. Who knows where the next attack will come from?

  • Destruction mode. Hurrah! The often-requested Destruction mode makes its glorious return, being high on our priority list. The map team is hard at work converting the existing maps to this game mode.
  • FOB. And yes, FOBs (Forward Operating Bases) will make their return as a new feature as well.
  • ECM on helicopters. Some of the more modern helicopters in-game will be equipped with ECM systems. Though not as advanced as those found on planes, some rotorcraft will have flares installed. Flying machines that will feature the upgrade include the Ka-50, Mi-24VP and AH-64 Apache.
There is even more
Next to SUCHET we are also working on some interesting single-player (or, as we call it, solo) features to be released later down the line. Such as?

Solo
  • The long-awaited Army General strategic turn-based campaign mode is coming along well! All the required units are modeled and placed, with the Order of Battle (OOB) completed, the formations (battalions) crafted, and the huge maps covering two-thirds of the CENTAG area and Inner German Border being built as we speak. More details to come!
  • We are also advancing well with the tutorials, which will teach all the important aspects of the game, from Orders to ATGM combat and Counter-Battery Artillery, in short, scripted scenarios.
  • What’s more, we are also working on Challenges (Steel Division 2 veterans know these as “Historical Battles”). These will be single skirmish battles, with fixed starting battlegroups, special objectives, and scripts.

Other improvements
Sometimes it’s not about adding something new, but fixing or improving what already is in place. With SUCHET, we’ll try to address some of the following issues as well:
  • improving LGB’s representation
  • improving SEAD’s effectiveness
  • more improving generally planes’ behaviour, especially autostrike
  • improving UI’s readibility
  • ... and more

Furthermore, we’re always on the hunt to improve the user interface of WARNO and to make the game easier to understand and play. For instance, many hints are missing or being rewritten as we speak, while we are reworking the infantry cards to make each squad’s role more intuitive to comprehend.
See you on the battlefield
All right, that’s all. Tune in next week as we will look at the first new SUCHET division.

British and French forces are now available !

Hello commander!

As we talked about in last week’s post, we are hard at work on the next major milestone for WARNO: BESSIERES.

A little surprise, but the update is already out today! We didn’t have the time (yet) to talk about that other division to ship with this WARNO update. We will take the opportunity to do so now!

First of all: BESSIERES will launch with two new maps: Rift revealed last week and the 10vs10 Crown.
But let's start with the juicy details first: make way for the Brits and their heavy-hitting 1st Armoured Division!
A little history
If one digs deep, the 1st Armoured Division has a pedigree that extends back to pre-World War II, starting life as the Mobile Division. However, this formation was renamed, reformed, and reconstituted countless times. The original formation served with distinction, from the Battle of France in 1940 to El Alamein in 1942, before being deployed to Italy and fight until 1945. Before the war was over, the division’s forces were scattered before being officially disbanded.

The 1st Armoured Division gained a second lease on life in the 1960s when it was formed as part of the British Army of the Rhine. The formation belonged to the NORTHAG area of responsibility, I British Corps, located somewhat to the north of the CENTAG sector of Western Germany. Much like other NATO forces permanently stationed in West Germany, 1st Armoured Division was a frontline division. A clear objective was to form behind a screen of friendly troops and repulse any Warsaw Pact advance into West Germany.

The late Cold War 1st Armoured Division was a strong tank division, with three armored brigades and no infantry brigade. Besides, two of its armored brigades were “heavy brigades” (two armored regiments each, with only one infantry regiment), and both had been converted to Challenger tanks by 1989. The last brigade was “light” (one tank regiment for two infantry regiments) and kept the older Chieftain main battle tanks. That’s a serious dose of heavy tank firepower!
What to expect in-game
So, what can you expect of the 1st Armoured Division in-game? Let’s look at the new division, category by category.

  • LOG - A standard category with Rover CP command jeep, FV432 Command and FV105 Sultan tracked CVs. Supply units are Bedford trucks and Chinook HC.1 helicopters.
  • INF - Once again, nothing too fancy for an armored division. Infantry include 8-man Rifles squads with L85A1 assault rifles, L86A1 SAW and LAW-80 rocket launchers, deployable in FV432 APCs. Also available are 7-man Arm. Rifles squads with the same small arms but carrying an M72 LAW and being brought to the battlefield courtesy of a Warrior IFV. Other infantry units are Assault Pioniers, with either a Carl Gustav or explosives (coming in a FV432 APC), as well as a 4-man Gun Group squad with two MAG medium machine guns (APC or IFV).
  • INF - Continuing with infantry. A player can also field MILAN 1 and 2 ATGM teams with their own Spartan MCT transport - which is a fast and small APC sporting twin MILAN launchers. Buy one, get one free! Lastly, we also have a squad of Redcaps, or RMP (Royal Military Police), which is a 4-man patrol with Sterling SMGs, L1A1 SLR and MAG machine gun.
  • ART - The United Kingdom is the only NATO nation not to field a heavy mortar. That’s why the 1st Armoured Division is restricted to 81mm systems, either on foot, or as a self-propelled version as the FV432 Mortar. Heavier guns include the ubiquitous FH-70 155mm howitzer, the FV433 Abbot (105mm) and the American-made M109A2 (155mm) SPGs.
  • TANK - Aah, this is where the division shines. Get ready to deploy LOTS of Chieftain Mk. 9 and Mk. 11, as well as Challenger Mk.1. These main battle tanks are slow, sturdy, and field a powerful 120mm tank gun. This category also contains the Centurion Mk.5 AVRE, the British counterpart to the M728, featuring the same gun as the American unit but on an older tank chassis. Missile-fielding tank destroyers include the FV438 Swingfire, with its dual-launcher and plentiful ammo, and the FV102 Striker, with five ready missiles but only one full reload.

  • RECO - The British were famous during the Gulf War (which in our version of history has been supplanted with World War III) for bringing “World War II” equipment to the battlefield (construction year 1952, to be exact). That’s why you will play with the rather outdated Ferret armored car, which lacks any modern recon equipment and is armed only with a medium machine gun. It’s fast, though, and its uparmed cousin, the FV721 Fox, is equipped with a RARDEN 30mm autocannon. Other recon units include the FV101 Scorpion and FV107 Scimitar recon tanks, which are already available to the Belgians. This category also contains a M113 Green Archer with radar, and Infantry Scouts in Spartan recon/transport APCs and Lynx helicopters. Cherry on the cake are the 4-man SAS Patrol teams with MP-5SD SMGs. Keep an eye on these guys; you don’t want them to get lost on the battlefield and spilling the beans in highly successful books about their ordeal afterward.

  • AA - Clearly the division’s weakness, with meagre anti-air defenses such as the Javelin MANPAD teams, Javelin LML (three MANPAD grouped together as a light SAM battery) and the Tracked Rapier self-propelled SAM. Once again, the Brits like to do things differently, as they never fielded a self-propelled anti-air gun, relying only on missile air defenses only.
HELO - A few slots that are cheap and with a choice of anti-tank Lynx HELARM (in both TOW and I-TOW versions) and the light Gazelle AH.1 with SNEB rockets.

  • AIR - The RAF is out in force and gives the division its top cover with a generous amount of slots and options. These range, with various load-outs, from Harrier to Jaguar GR.1, Tornado F.3 and Tornado GR.1 fighters and fighter bombers.
Get ready to take the Crown
The second new map coming courtesy of BESSIERES is a new 10vs10 battlefield: Crown. The map covers an area of 90km² with large urban areas. A defining feature of the new map is the substantial number of command zones. Players need to dominate the battlefield and to do that, they need to keep up the advance, step by bloody step. Taking control of the many towns and villages, as well as the command zones, will be key to victory.

Despite some obviously very defensive positions, we included several open areas on the map, offering clear lines of sight. Expect lots of varied gameplay on Crown.

Let us know what you think!
BESSIERES notes
BESSIERES comes with a massive patch including new features, updates and improvements.

v.80353 : Bessière milestone

PATCHLOG
NEW MAP
• 1 new 3v3 map: Rift

Rift is the first map with night lighting.
The map has two huge plateaus in the south and in the north. These two plateaus run along the center of the map which is completely flat and open.
Like the Cyrus map, Rift offers extended lines of sight with a drastic reduction of choke points.

  • 1 new 10v10 map: Crown

Crown is our new map designed for 10vs10 battles. The map has a large number of command zones. This configuration is intended to offer a gameplay access to micro-management.

  • Geisa has always been our biggest map, featuring both chokepoints, huge chunks of forest and a few open spaces. Some of you commanders have pointed out the lack of flanking roads, that sometimes made the map feel too divided in isolated sectors : it might have been difficult to maneuver to help your teammate in need, namely near the side corridor containing Quebec, Romeo and Sierra.

As a consequence, we decided to open up the forest by creating a dirt way network crossing it, making flank and evasive maneuvers much more easy to perform and likely to happen. Thoses changes aim to make the map feel more open and encouraging more offensive moves, while keeping Geisa's core layout.
