SacriFire - Devlog #11 - "The Bad and the Wicked"

Hello, SacriFire Community!
I’m the Baaaaad Guy
In our last update we spoke about three of SacriFire’s heroes, so it’s only fair that this time around we shine the devlog spotlight onto three of our early-game villains. While many of Ezekiel’s enemies will be demonic in nature, our young hero will also be pitted against more than a few humans (of questionable morality) during his journey, and those are the bad guys we’ll be focusing on for the purposes of today’s post. Let’s get wicked!
(Mild spoilers for the first section of SacriFire will follow.)
Lord Ducane
The Wealthiest Man in Antioch”. Lord Ducane owns the mines which provide Antioch with much of its tenebrium, and rules over the affluent district of Opus Peaks. He has a reputation of being miserly and proud, but few have ever met him in person — the tycoon lives in a manor surrounded by vast grounds filled with patrolling guards and zahne (Antioch’s answer to velociraptors).
The reclusive Lord Ducane rarely ventures outside, but when he and his children become central figures in a Church investigation into a missing artefact, he is reluctantly forced to grant an audience to a certain bishop you may all be familiar with: Ezekiel Ridan.
Rowan Allec
Every megalomaniac needs a henchman, and that’s where Rowan Allec - captain of Lord Ducane’s household guards – comes in. An expert fighter with sword and lance, Rowan rose quickly through the ranks of the Ducane standing army to arrive at his current, prestigious position, despite rumors of cruelty, sadism, and possible insanity.
Rowan takes an instant dislike to Ezekiel when the two of them first meet, during Ezekiel’s investigation into the Ducane household. As SacriFire progresses and the two of them cross paths more frequently, the tension rises, and it seems inevitable that one day there will be a reckoning...
Silk
Ezekiel won’t be spending all his time in Opus Peaks. Silk is the de facto ruler of the poverty-stricken area known as the Barrows, but she’s no noblewoman; she’s the leader of a criminal gang known as ‘The White Paw’. Rumor has it that Silk became leader of her gang by killing her own father in order to seize control. She does not discourage the rumor, but has gone so far as to say that if it is true, she believes he would have approved.
Ezekiel and some of his companions find themselves in Silk’s clutches after they are forced to navigate Antioch’s criminal underworld during their investigation, and soon discover that the dungeons of the White Paw are dark and deep — and there are many secrets within.
And more?
Antioch has more than its fair share of evildoers, and we’ve only just scratched the surface here. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed the sneak peek, because next update we’ll be getting even eviler! Ezekiel’s going to have his work cut out for him...
As always, we’d like to thank you for reading our devlogs, and for your continued support of SacriFire. We’ll be back with another update next month!

SacriFire - Devlog #10 - "Playtest Recap, PAX West, and Companion Lore"

Hey everyone,

Hopefully you’re in a reading mood, because we have a special bumper-size devlog update in store for you today. We’ll begin with the reaction to our recent demo, talk a little about our recent trip to Pax West, and round things off with a nice piece of lore for those who would like to know a little bit more about Ezekiel’s companions. Let’s dive right in!

Playtest Summary

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to June when Summer was in full swing. Days were long and sunny, but few noticed because the SacriFire Playtest was finally made available for the first time. This was our biggest opportunity yet to have a large number of players try out SacriFire for themselves and deliver their opinions, and they did so in great numbers. Let’s look at some figures:
 • Over 6500 Steam users joined the Playtest
 • 15,000 new people wishlisted the game on Steam, allowing us to surpass the goal of 100,000 outstanding wishlists
 • Over 110 players took the time to fill out the feedback survey - a special thank you for those of you who did that!
What have we learned?
• Overall, we are pleased with how the playtest was received. Clearly, there's a lot of work still to be done, and there are still many problematic areas, but the twin pillars of gameplay and story both held up
 • The new battle system, which has undergone dramatic changes (basically a complete rewrite) compared to the previous version of the game is generally considered to be a major improvement, with stronger fundamentals
 • Many people, both on Steam and, recently, at PAX, were pleasantly surprised by how unique the gameplay experience was. We consider this our biggest win from Demo 3.
Key Areas to Improve

NEW TUTORIALS
The Playtest Demo wasn't that long, but it was VERY dense, with tutorials explaining complex mechanics in a short time. This resulted in an unintuitive experience that could be difficult to understand.

The full game has a big sequence dedicated solely to easing new players into the game. But the takeaway from the playtest is that the tutorials will be spread out more and introduced organically with the unfolding story. Existing tutorial screens will also be improved.
PERFORMANCE
Both in terms of framerate and loading times. The game can be heavy and is easily bottlenecked by the CPU. A memory leak bug was present in the build, which degraded performance over time. Finally, loading times for battles were long, bordering on unacceptably so.

We will resolve this by pruning the number of objects loaded and by moving some data into different contexts - for example, loading it when the player enters a dungeon. Internally, we have already reduced the load time by 30% and we expect this number to improve more as we keep refining the code.
CHARACTER PORTRAITS
New players on Steam generally didn't vibe with how the portraits were drawn, and thought they failed to meet the quality of the game's other visual elements.

Our illustrator, MeganUosiu, is working on a brand-new set of character portraits done in a different style. Rest assured, we are also going to leave the old set as an option in the settings, so if you liked the old ones better - you can still use them!
ALL THE SMALL THINGS
We are adding an option to use items outside of battles, improving the controls, adding new options to the settings panel, polishing the user interface screens to make them more intuitive... and much more!

PAX WEST 2024 TRAVEL LOG

In other news, we returned to Seattle this year, with our valiant delegation showcasing the new Demo to hundreds of convention attendees. In an exciting twist, SacriFire has been selected to be a part of the Pax Rising Showcase. How sick is that?

It was really fun to be a part of Pax again, and we even managed to meet some familiar faces who also visited our booth last year! Many new players tried out SacriFire, we gathered A TON of useful feedback, and the general excitement regarding the game has really given us a much-needed dose of optimism. If you visited us - thank you!

Devlog: Player Companions

Finally, as promised, a healthy dose of lore. Let’s take a closer look at two of Ezekiel’s companions!

We hope there may be a few surprises in store for you during SacriFire, but for the purposes of this spoiler-light[1] update, we’ll be focusing on your first two companions: Zephaniah Milto, and Ava Valeri. Like Ezekiel, Zeph, and Ava are committed to serving the Church of Sheol and protecting the city of Antioch against the looming threat of the demon lord Amaymon.
Player Companion: Zephaniah Milto
Age: 21
Birthday: 19th of Malkios
Favorite Food: Zapi
Siblings: 2 Sisters

First up, let's meet Zephaniah Milto, Ezekiel’s best friend and fellow novice.

Zephaniah (Zeph to his friends) is known for his flippant humor and happy-go-lucky attitude. Don’t underestimate him, however – Near the beginning of SacriFire, Zeph’s prowess in combat earns him the rare title of bishop aeternus, marking him as one of the most formidable warriors in the Church of Sheol.

Zephaniah was born in 552 M.N in the district of Ivanstone, where he grew up with his parents (Jeriah and Martha) and two sisters (Beth and Dinah). Throughout SacriFire, players will have the opportunity to explore Zeph's family dynamics, uncovering the sacrifices that shaped him into the man he is today.
Player Companion: Ava Valeri
Age: 21
Birthday: 5th of Limbios
Favorite Drink: Soothing Herbata
Height: 164cm

Ava Valeri is an acid-tongued novice who gets off to a somewhat rocky start with Ezekiel and Zephaniah, as those who have played the most recent demo will attest. While Ava initially keeps her companions at arm's length, perhaps you'll see her evolve over the course of SacriFire (or perhaps you won’t; as Ava herself would say, “Why tamper with perfection?”)

Ava was born in 552 M.N in the district of Rivarol to the district’s noble families: the Valeris. Her parents being extremely wealthy and extremely cold, Ava eventually ran away from home to join Koritsi Novitiate. Initially she faced a lot of challenges (having been granted special treatment her whole life; the adjustment to anonymous novice was not an easy one) but she proved more than equal to the challenge and soon rose up through the ranks.

Ava has a particularly long road to walk through SacriFire, and you’ll get to learn a lot more about her (and Zeph) throughout the course of the game. We hope you enjoy meeting these characters as much as we’ve enjoyed creating them!

That’s All!

And that's a wrap for today's (hefty) devlog! We've only just skimmed the surface of the world of SacriFire so far, but we hope you will warm to these characters as we have; they are integral to the narrative, helping to shape the history and heart of Antioch through their personal stories and interactions. We look forward to sharing more about them – and hearing your thoughts as we continue to unravel the rich tapestry of SacriFire. See you next time!

[1] But not spoiler-free, as we talk a little about the first mission

SacriFire - Devlog #9 - "Meet Ezekiel Ridan"

Hello, and welcome to our devlog entry about Mr. SacriFire himself: Ezekiel Ridan (it’s pronounced Rye-den, by the way). Keep reading to find out everything that we’re ready to reveal about our game’s pious protagonist. As always, we’ll try to hold some of the most significant plot developments back, but if you prefer to a completely spoiler-free experience, then best stop reading now and wait for the release! You have been warned.
Who is Ezekiel Ridan?
Those who’ve played the demo will already have some idea about the role Ezekiel occupies within the world of SacriFire. He’s not a fully-fledged hero quite yet (actually, he’s just a lowly novice in the Church of Sheol) but he’s already built a reputation as a skilled warrior and a devout follower of the Word, known for his moral integrity and compassion.

The Novice Masters speculate that Ezekiel could one day be destined for great things, perhaps even ascension to bishophood or beyond... while at the same time, Ezekiel’s fellow novices whisper in the training yard that perhaps the virtuous young priest might be just a little bit too perfect. Every day, carefully divided between prayer, sparring, and study – can anybody truly be so devout? Surely, pride will come before a fall.
Concept Art

Humble Beginnings
On the 14th Malkios, a blue-haired boy was born in a birthing wheel in Noyhu district; the son of Dekar Ridan, a local blacksmith, and Abigail Liffen, a florist. He was granted the name of Ezekiel Ridan.
- Register of Antioch, 552 M.N

Ezekiel’s first years were happy but unremarkable, until a tragic accident claimed the lives of both of his parents. Agori Novitiate took the traumatised boy in and offered him the promise of a new life, in which, through the teachings of the Church of Sheol, he again found purpose and hope.

Ezekiel’s greatest idol is Elise Lejeune, a legendary bishop, who disappeared over five hundred years ago
Paradise Lost?
The god Sheol has great plans for Ezekiel, who promises to be a powerful force for good in Antioch. In the spirit world of Erebus, Sheol speaks directly to the aspiring bishop, helping to calm his occasional doubts and offer guidance whenever possible. Ezekiel’s devotion to Sheol is absolute – more than anything else, he deserves to serve his god well.

However, Amaymon, the first Demon, recognises an opportunity to steal one of his ancient enemy’s most devoted soldiers away. Through the sinister and seductive Azura, Amaymon tries to reach Ezekiel in many different ways. Can the young priest be tempted over to the side of evil?
While the story of SacriFire offers its fair share of physical battles, the true battle is a metaphysical one – the fight for Ezekiel Ridan’s soul.

SacriFire - Devlog #8 - "The Bishops of Sheol"

Hello, we’re back with another devlog! This time around, we’re taking a deep dive into the topic of Sheol’s very own demon-smiting rock stars: the bishops.

Bishops are the most revered warriors in Antioch, famed all over the city for their bravery, daring exploits, noble hearts, and stylish gold armor with white capes. Bishops do not involve themselves with the petty politics of the nobles, instead serving Sheol - and the people of Antioch - directly.
Becoming Bishops
As one might expect to be the case for such an elite group, anyone hoping to become a bishop has to undergo a challenging series of tests, designed to weed out all but the strongest and bravest. These tests are known as the Trials of Faith.

In the Trial of the Mind, the candidate will demonstrate their intelligence and problem-solving ability by cracking an erebus lock. In the Trial of the Body, the candidate will show their physical capabilities and combat skills by fighting a procession of captive demons. Finally, in the Trial of the Soul, senior bishops will question the candidate’s character, as well as their knowledge of the Word (the sacred texts of the Church of Sheol). Only the strong will succeed.

Should a bishop successfully overcome the Trials of Faith, the next day they will be sent to the Dome for the ritual of the Ascension. In this centuries-old ceremony, the chosen novices look evil in the face and swear they will protect the city of Antioch, from that day until the day of their final voyage.

SacriFire begins on the dawn of the trials of novice Ezekiel Ridan.
The Mission
Being a bishop entails fighting three foes: the demons above, the beast below… and the heretics within. Each enemy presents their own, unique challenges.
The Demons Above
Long ago, the great protector Sheol carried humanity through hell in order to reach the safe haven of Antioch. Now, while the hellgate above the city keeps the city’s citizens safe from the hordes of demons outside, bishops still have to face the so-called ‘Children of Amaymon’ inside Erebus. And of course, should the Hellgate ever fall…
The Beasts Below
At the base of the cavern of Antioch, beneath the stalagmites upon which the city is built, there are many deadly monsters known as Sorrow Beasts. These creatures - some resembling plants, others reptiles, and others things best left unimagined - habitually try to climb up the stalagmites to reach the city above. Best not let that happen.
The Heretics Within
The most serious, and insidious, of the threats faced by the bishops is that of the heretics. Heretics are citizens of Antioch who carry a demon inside their mind. This demon influences their movements and corrupts them into fighting against Sheol, as well as granting them supernatural powers to turn them into more capable weapons.
A Lasting Legacy
Finally, before we say goodbye, let’s take a look at just a few of the bishops who play a notable role in SacriFire…
Elise Lejeune - ‘The Daughter of Sheol’
Little is known about Elise Lejeune, the first bishop of them all. Legend states that after serving faithfully for many years, Elise gave her life in order to save the city - an event known as ‘the sacrifice’.
Bohemond Abram - ‘A Living Legend’
Bohemond Abram is archbishop at the time of SacriFire, and his command role is more than justified given his impressive service history. After becoming a bishop in 543 M.N, Bohemond fought in many famous battles against the heretics, including the Bloodstone Conflict, where he continued fighting despite a heretic cutting off his left arm. There are rumors of a great lost love in his past, but those close to the archbishop know better than to pry.

Bohemond is also a Bishop Victorinus, having won the Astradivos Tournament an impressive nine times. It’s not for nothing that many of the novices refer to Bohemond as a living legend.
Drusilla Hark - ‘Loyal to the End’
Drusilla Hark is a character we haven’t spoken much about so far, so we’re very excited to do so today. While she’s a relatively new bishop (having ascended just three years prior to SacriFire), and although at first glance she can appear shy and soft-spoken, in Drusilla’s short time as a bishop she has already proven herself a highly capable warrior and a dependable servant of Sheol.

Drusilla is not the only bishop in her family. The plaque of her sister, Sally Hark, can be found inside the Hall of Valor in Sanctuary.

Of course, Bohemond and Drusilla are only two of the current crop of bishops - in Antioch you’ll meet many others, and each has their own story to tell. We hope you’ll enjoy fighting evil and smiting demons alongside them - assuming you pass the trials, of course…

Until next time!
