Chilly DevLogs from Alaska! #91 - Beneath the surface of gold mine

Welcome to a 91 DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!
[p]

Hello again, explorers!

Last time, we took you deep underground. Today, we’re stepping back into the entrance of gold mines - where light behaves very differently! But is just as important for mood, navigation, and gameplay.

From sunlight to lamplight

Transitioning from the bright overworld into a dark mine is a big moment. To make it work, we carefully balance exposure and contrast so the shift feels natural, not jarring.

Outside light slowly fades as you descend, giving way to localized light sources underground. This makes lamps, lanterns, and reflections feel more important - and more comforting.

Extra effects underground

Inside the mines, we layer additional effects on top of the baked lighting. Deepened the shadows, subtle dust particles that catch light beams and other details that add life to otherwise static spaces.

Here you can see how it was vs how it looks now. The darker the better, right?

That’s all for this devlog. Next time, we’ll take a closer look at some SPECIAL character taht will rattle your bones ;)

Until then - stay warm out there!
