Chilly DevLogs from Alaska! #97 GAME MECHANICS: Crafting & Tools
Welcome to a 97 DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!
Hello again, explorers!
This time, we’re focusing on the tools that keep you going - and the systems that let you create, improve, and survive in the harsh Alaskan wilderness.
Gathering the Basics
Everything starts with simple resources.
As you explore, you’ll gather sticks and stones - the foundation for your first tools. Sticks are especially useful, not only for crafting but also for starting campfires and surviving the cold.
Don’t feel like picking them up one by one?
No problem - you can process wood into sticks and get what you need much faster.

Workstations
To craft more advanced items, you’ll need proper equipment.
Across Alaska, especially near most mines, you’ll find different workstations:
Quick Craft
Basic crafting on the go. Allows you to create simple items using materials from your inventory - no station required.
Campfire Cooking
The most basic way to prepare food. Using a campfire, you can cook simple meals that provide small bonuses and help you stay efficient during exploration.
Workshop
Your primary crafting station for tools. This is where you create and maintain essential equipment like pickaxes and other mining gear.
Carpentry Station
Focused on wood-based crafting. Used to create structural elements like supports, rails, and other construction components needed in and around the mine.
Furrier Workstation
Used for processing animal materials. Turn gathered resources into useful clothes that can protect you in harsh conditions.
Stove Cooking
An advanced cooking station. Found in better facilities like a motel kitchen, it allows you to prepare more complex meals with stronger and longer-lasting bonuses.

Cooking & Buffs
Food in Alaska isn’t just for flavor.
Using recipes, you can cook different meals - especially in better locations like a motel kitchen (once you build it). Higher quality dishes provide useful bonuses that can support your work and exploration.
But don’t worry - your character will never starve.
We decided to remove hunger as a strict survival mechanic to keep the experience more enjoyable and less punishing ;)

Upgrading Your Tools
Basic tools are just the beginning.
You can upgrade certain equipment - like your pickaxe - using gems found in the mines:
topaz, ruby, emerald (missing a sapphire, eh?)
Each gem improves different parameters, making your tools more efficient and powerful.
Upgrades are performed at the Engineer’s Workshop, so make sure to visit him in town!

More Than Just a Pickaxe
You’ll have access to a variety of tools, each serving a unique purpose. For example::
• Axe - for cutting trees, but also for removing rails and supports inside the mine
• Dynamite - a fast way to break through parts of the mine walls… but it comes at a high cost
Choosing the right tool for the job can save you time - and sometimes your life.
Press TAB to open inventory menu.
Assign (equip) tools by selecting them (highlighted items are equipped)
Use 1,2,3 and 4 to cycle between equiped tools.
Use ALT to hide a currently equiped tool.

What Comes Next
In the next DevLog, we’ll move beyond tools and take a look at a different side of life in Alaska - running your own business.
From managing a motel, to building a farm, to expanding your mine with hired workers - we’ll show you how to turn your hard-earned gold into something bigger!
