Chilly DevLogs from Alaska! #95 GAME MECHANICS: In the Gold Mine

Hello again, explorers!

Today we’re heading straight back underground - not just to dig, but to build, survive, and shape the mine itself.

Because in Alaska… the mine is not a safe place.
Unless you make it one.



Mining isn’t just about breaking rocks - it’s also about preventing everything from collapsing on your head.

As you dig deeper, you’ll need to build wooden supports to stabilize tunnels and keep the mine from caving in. Placing them in the right spots can mean the difference between a productive expedition… and a very short one. Watch out for sound and visual effects to know when you need to place a wooden support!



And yes - if you ever need to redesign your tunnel layout, supports can be dismantled using an axe.





A growing mine needs infrastructure.

You’ll be able to build rail tracks and use mine carts to transport debris and materials more efficiently. No more running back and forth with heavy loads - let the system work for you!



Of course, all of this requires resources.
And that means one thing:
Wood.
Lots of it.

You’ll need to venture into the forest, gather timber, and bring it back to expand your mining operations. Again, just use your trusty axe!



You’ll encounter gaps, cliffs, and dangerous drops that block your progress. To move forward, you’ll need to build bridges across chasms or even create entirely new mine entrances to access different areas.





Right outside each mining site, you’ll find (or be able to build) a camp - your base of operations. Here, you can light a campfire, sleep in a tent, and use crafting stations to prepare for the next expedition.

Smaller mines offer simple setups. But larger mines come with expanded camps - and even the possibility to hire workers to help you manage operations!
