Chilly DevLogs from Alaska ! #49 - Surviving Alaska's Chilly Depths

Welcome to a forty-ninth DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!

Hey there, brave prospectors!

Today, we're plunging into the icy depths of Alaska's waters in Alaska Gold Fever.
Join us as we explore the dangers of freezing waters, how we calculate the damage it can do to you, and how we've harnessed the power of sea assets in Unity to create a chillingly immersive experience (experience of dying in freezing water)

Frosty Waters

First things first – let's talk about the dangers of cold water in Alaska. It's not just chilly; it's downright bone-chilling!
In Alaska Gold Fever, dipping your toes into these frigid waters can spell disaster.

Calculating Damage

But how do we calculate the damage caused by these icy waters?
It's a delicate balance of realism and gameplay. We take into account factors like water temperature, exposure time, and your character's clothing to determine the severity of the damage.

Take a quick dip to cool off, and you might be fine. But linger too long, and you'll feel NOTHING for the rest of your existence ;)

All Kinds Of Damage!

Visual repersentation of taking damage is a staple in most games. Standard HP bars are a must (but sometimes devs give up on them)
We prepared some for a lot of KIND damages you can take while exploring Alaska. Have fun!

From Sea to River

Now, let's talk about how we bring these frosty waters to life in Unity.
While we use sea and ocean assets as our base, they're super versatile!
With a little creative magic, we transform them to suit other bodies of water, like lakes and rivers.

And here's a fun fact – in the early days of development, we didn't even allow players to enter the water!
It was too dangerous, even for virtual adventurers if you know what i mean ;) .
But as we tuned up our systems, we decided to let you dip your toes into the chilly depths - but not for too long!

Chilly DevLogs from Alaska ! #48- Live in Alaskan Woods

Welcome to a forty-eight DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!

Hey there, nature lovers and forest explorers! Today, we're diving into the lush forests of Alaska in Alaska Gold Fever. Let's chat about how we bring these magical places to life in cool 3D graphics, especially focusing on making bushes and painting all the pretty colors that make our forests pop!

Into the Woods

Remember this old movie Into The Woods? I hope your journey to the Alaskan wilderness wont end ip like protagonist of this movie :( Nevertheless a player must be aware of souroding dangers and the woods are full of them! But you must go throu forests to travel to another places in Alska (like gold mines in mountains) so INTO THE WOODS!

Adding Life to the Ground

I already showed trees and some foliage in previous devlogs but now i wanna show you all dear PLayers some more groind work ;) Simple bushes and grass - yes very interesting ;) I want t oshow you how to make it MORE ALASKAN.

Using simple tools in Unity engine we can change the color of prefabs but how to make them LOOK like they are in COLD climate??

Using specialized tools and a specialized bitmaps we can change textures to look lie more lets call it |SNOWY". Better then all green or all white, eh?

You can even set colors like brown and yellow (yellowish..?) to make a mid-climate bushes.
Our levels will contain 3 main weathers :
-simple "normal" climate (mostly green, green with white)
-a "transition" mid climate (brown, yellow, just some green)
-cold one-hard to survive!!! (green-white and white foliage)

One forest and soo many design choices!
Alas, you can also use this tool for making other things "covered in snow" !!!
Just look at this old plank:

And there you have it– a peek into how we make the forests in Alaska Gold Fever look awesome.
More info in next devlog, stay tuned :D

Chilly DevLogs from Alaska ! #46 - From Blockout to Reality

Welcome to a forty-sixth DevLog for Alaska Gold Fever!

Hello travelers!

Howdy, level architects and frontier explorers! Today, we're embarking on an journey through the creation of levels in Alaska Gold Fever. Join us as we unveil the secrets behind transforming blockout designs into immersive, jaw-dropping landscapes!!!

Sketching the Blueprint of Adventure

First, a level must have a concept art and a "blueprint" in some simple program like draw.io or something similar. Designer use simple "blocks" and basic information to make it clear for others.
A rough sketch of the terrain, pathways, and landmarks.

I can show you a bit of level. It's often more in white color xd but i like to make it darker because my eyes hurts ;/

Blockout Blueprint

Once the skeleton of the level is in place, it's time to infuse it with life and detail. In the digital realm, we populate the landscape with placeholder objects, setting the stage for the grand spectacle to come.

I swear i wanted to spell "HELLO" !!! Making someeee mountainsssss

Strategic Placement

But it's not just about creating a pretty picture – it's about crafting an immersive experience. Every tree, every rock, and every gold nugget is strategically placed to guide the player's journey. First as some "blocks" later they will be replaced by 3D art.

From Virtual to Reality

Now comes the magic moment – transforming our digital dreams into reality.
All this raw looking blockout must be done first and THEN level artists and 3D artists can make it into beautiful thing. Just see this picture. It was a grey-white blocks at the start! And now is a full terrain.

And with that, fellow adventurers, we bid adieu for now.
Until we meet again, stay bold, stay curious, and may your discoveries be as rich as the gold you seek!
