Patch 0.3.7b - New resources and raging cows
Howdy, partners!
After the dust has settled on our first month of beta we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for participating and showing us how much you care about this little game of ours. We can’t wait to hear your feedback while you continue exploring the ever-expanding Wild West, where adventure knows no bounds!

Thanks to your responses on our Discord we have decided to try out a schedule where we strive to update the game once per month.

Before we start, remember that what we are showing is still work in progress so there might be crashes, weird behavior, or stuff missing. Make sure you use the in-game bug reporting tool or the Discord channel to report them.

So with that out of the way let’s venture into Patch Notes:
New Copper Tier
We have noticed the abrupt impact to the gameplay when going from stone to iron and have introduced a new resource in between - copper.

With this new resource, we have adjusted some of the recipes and also introduced Copper Tier items: copper axe, pickaxe, shovel, torch, lamp, and bonfire with pot.

Tools and craftables
Straw Bed
In the beginning, we only had one type of bed, which might have been a bit too hard to build, especially in the early stages of the game. So we have introduced a lower tier to allow faster base building out in the wild. Not that fancy, but does its job!
Cheap Chest
We heard you loud and clear about the chest problem:

So expect to be able to craft a cheaper version that has more space for items. Progress!
Quests UI (WIP)
Quests are important in any cowboy's journey and remembering them even more so. Thus we started implementing a Quest Log so you can keep track of your progress. Mind you the UI is still a work in progress so it won’t be shiny in all the places.
Partial new UI
Besides Quest UI you’ll be able to notice new UI in other places, this is all part of our UI overhaul. The UI overhaul will continue over multiple future updates. This also includes BIGGER description text, as we have seen in some playthroughs that people were struggling with reading it. (Sorry about that 😣)
Charging Cow
Cows will no longer stand around idle and be cute while you do all your shenanigans. Try to mess with them and you’ll know bovine wrath!
No profession in the character creator
Due to the low impact, it had on the start of the game, professions have been removed. Decide your path by the way you survive and thrive in the wild.
Butter hair
With croissant ears & taco nose, we had to top it off with some smooth looking butter hair.
Cactus Hat
Fashion has always been timeless so the Wild West is getting more hats. Show off your style even with a lack of resources. Introducing: the Cactus Hat.

We are eager to see y'all play and to hear your thoughts. Make sure to join our Discord if you haven’t already and let us know how the cowboy life is treating you.

A lot has happened since we last made an update on Steam! The dev team is growing, the game is getting better, and we're getting closer and closer to our closed beta test.

We have a brand new gameplay trailer to share which you might have already seen on the store page. In the trailer, you can see our hero taming his first horse, building a ranch for himself, riding into the town of Tumbleville, and receiving a quest to rescue Lars the Carpenter.

We've also updated the screenshots and the capsule art to give a more accurate representation of the game.

Happy Holidays from the Don't Die in the West team

Howdy,

Since it is the holiday season, we wanted to take the opportunity to introduce the team behind Don't Die in the West. Our team is a small group of talented people dedicated to creating fun games. We have a shared passion for the western genre, which inspired us to create Don't Die in the West.

Tommy H. - Lead Artist

”I am a creative octopus who loves to create all the visual elements you can imagine in a game. I have been working with games professionally for 12 years and playing them since I was old enough to handle a mouse and a keyboard.
We are a small but strong art team on DDITW. It includes Jan, Juan, and myself. Jan is our technical art wizard and Juan is an all-around gunslinger artist.
It's hard to pick just one western movie, but I think Tarantino did something extraordinary with The Hateful Eight.”

Tommy P. - Lead programmer

“I'm 37 years old and have been working on games professionally for the better part of 12 years.
As lead programmer, I act as the link between the many different disciplines working on the project. Together with Kasper and Daniel, I am making sure everyone has the technical tools needed to create an awesome game.
My list of great western movies is many, one of my favorites is the original Westworld movie from 1973 (the one that later inspired a very popular HBO series).”

Glen C. - Creative Lead

”I've been working with games for almost 15 years. First as a programmer, then designer, and now as the creative lead.
Together with Mette in the role of game and level designer we work on bringing our vision of the western frontier to life.
My favorite western is A Fistful of Dollars. It's a little rough around the edges, but you can feel all the care put into making it.”

If you want to stay up to date with our team make sure you Join our Discord where we are active most of the time.

Now for some game updates! This month we extended our work on the building mechanic and added the ability to build vertically. Check out some of our examples.

New home building elements and more furniture

Howdy, y’all!

As the weather gets colder and colder having a cozy place where you can hang your hat and drink your cocoa becomes even more important. This is also something a legendary cowboy is looking forward to after a full day of heists, escaping the law, or planting crops.

This month the team has been hard at work developing the home-building mechanics. We’ve added new construction materials, elements, and furniture and improved the mechanics of building your dream ranch.

We have focused on implementing some new construction materials such as:

Plywood

Wood logs

Stone

Here are a few more examples of cozy ranches built around the Wild West:

Prairie house

Lake house

And somehow a talking clock made its way into our home!
