Only 1 day left!

Seeds of Calamity is releasing tomorrow and I can’t wait! Here are a few tips to make your first few days in-game a bit smoother.

  1. The accessibility menu has a lot of options in it so make sure you take a look. You can change the length of day or slow down the fishing mini game among many other things.
  2. You can check to see if an npc has a quest for you by looking at your map and hovering over a point of interest.
  3. Make sure to go into the village on day 3 and talk to Tonna to learn about the dungeon.

I have one more small favor to ask. After you buy the game, please leave an honest review on the Steam page. Getting early reviews can really boost a game’s visibility in the Steam algorithm. 😊

And that’s it! The next newsletter you see, you will be able to buy Seeds of Calamity!

Today, I wanted to talk to you about my favorite feature to design, animate, write, and code in Seeds of Calamity.

I had a lot of fun designing the combat for this game. I’ve been so glad that the reception for the combat has been positive! It was a lot of work but I’m really happy with the results. Turn based combat is like a puzzle. I wanted each battle to be a new challenge for you to “solve”. I tried to make each enemy feel unique or at least present a new challenge.

My favorite animations by far are the baby farm animals. They are just so cute and making all the unique idle animations for them was fun.

The fox spirits Rion and Tion are my favorite npcs to write. They play off of each other so well and I’ve enjoyed their funny dialog.

My favorite coding challenges were the festival mini games. It’s fun to code a game within a game. Making a small enclosed game loop was very satisfying and a nice change of pace from some of the larger features.

Tomorrow I will be back to give some insider tips and tricks to make your first few days in-game as smooth as possible.

Only 3 days left!

I can’t believe there's only 3 days left until the release of Seeds of Calamity. It’s been almost exactly 5 years since this game was just an idea in my head.

I’m a web developer for my day job and often had the passing thought that it would be cool to make a video game. When I decided to take the plunge and get serious about designing one of my own, I wanted to make a game similar to my favorite game: Stardew Valley. But I also wanted to draw inspiration from other games that I love such as Hades, Zelda, and Pokémon.

This entire adventure has been both the most creatively rewarding project I’ve ever taken on while also being the most challenging. Coding was familiar to me from the start, but I had never created a single piece of pixel art before starting this game! It took a lot of practice and iteration to get to the art you see in-game today. :)

This has been a labor of love and I truly mean it when I say “I hope you enjoy playing the game as much as I’ve enjoyed making it”.
Now that we are so close to the release, you will be hearing from me every day until launch. Tomorrow I'll be back to talk about my favorite features in the game.

Last time, I talked about what features Seeds of Calamity will be releasing with but now I want to talk about the future development of the game.

I absolutely love working on this game and will continue development for quite some time. Here is what I have planned for the future:

Ranch Update:
  • Two more animals to raise.
  • Unlock the Spinning Wheel to process animal products.
Combat Update:
  • Unlock the Challenge Dungeon with Erik.
  • Final tier of combat elixirs.
Village Update:
  • Yri and Tonna’s final story quest.
  • Unlock the Challenge altar in the village Shrine.
  • More seasonal quests.
Farm Update:
  • More crops.
  • Bombs to help remove items on your farm.
  • Extra farm decorations.
Final Update:
  • New starting maps.
  • Steam achievements.

I will also create one new companion type for each update. In 2 days, I’ll be back to talk about my journey in making this game.

Talk to you very soon,
Jenny
