Read more about Den of Wolves in EDGE magazine #393

End of 2023, we had the pleasure of welcoming EDGE to our 10 Chambers office in Stockholm, Sweden. There, they meet with Ulf Andersson (Creative Director) and Simon Viklund (Narrative & Audio Director) to discuss their history in the gaming industry, but – of course – mostly Den of Wolves! This all resulted in a lengthy feature article in the February issue (#393) of EDGE Magazine, available to get here or (depending on where you live) at your local kiosk.

In the article, you’ll find exclusive concept art and information about Den of Wolves, previously not discussed. Learn more about the world of Den of Wolves and how we’re hoping to add to the heist genre.

Thanks to EDGE for visiting us. We love you!

And if you haven't done it yet; don't forget to wishlist Den of Wolves.

Den of Wolves covered by your favorite gaming publications

Following the reveal at this year's The Game Awards we have gathered several preview articles from Wired, PC Gamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, and more. These are based on interviews with Creative Director Ulf Andersson and Narrative Director & Music Composer Simon Viklund, held during our worldwide press tour for Den of Wolves, which culminated in the reveal at The Game Awards.

VentureBeat
"Having worked on heist games in the past which channeled classic bank robbery themes, we wanted to take Den of Wolves in an exciting new direction that allows us to elevate what a heist can be,” said Ulf Andersson. “You can only rob so many banks. Den of Wolves’ sci-fi themes and gameplay elements gave us the freedom to offer more variety in heists — incorporating corporate espionage, sabotage, and assassinations."

PressStart
While Den of Wolves is pivoting away from the hardcore appeal of GTFO, 10 Chambers made sure to emphasise that they still want difficulty and progression to play key roles in the reason players keep coming back to the game.

Gamespot
"We value the art of worldbuilding enormously, so even though Den of Wolves isn't an open-world game, the history and narrative we've built around Midway City is considerable," 10 Chambers boss Simon Viklund said. "We want Midway to feel like a believable city of the near future where late-stage capitalism has gone rampant, and corporations set the rules.

VG247
“First thing’s first, it’s not a dystopia." Viklund was firm on that. “It’s more of a moral dystopia of sorts," he explained, "there may be shining cities around the world - the world is thriving - but this is the one place where everyone needs to be. I think it’s an interesting route to have this few square kilometres on earth where you have to be if you’re a blue-chip company.”

Rock, Paper, Shotgun
10 Chambers don't use the term "cyberpunk", calling the theme "sci-fi" or a "techno-thriller", but it all sounds pretty cyberpunk to me.

ScreenRant
The game's co-op aspect is key, requiring players to strategize and gather intel and tools before embarking on bigger jobs, and it aims to surprise heist fans with mind-bending sci-fi concepts and unique gameplay experiences.

PC Gamer
It's a heist game inspired by Inception, The Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, and Blade Runner—in short, "mindfuck sci-fi," as Den of Wolves narrative director Simon Viklund (also a Payday alum) put it to me when we met last week.

Eurogamer
The idea is Midway City will serve as a "grounded sci-fi" playground for Den of Wolves' evolved co-operative heist gameplay - intended to be an "unpredictable" mix of stealth, action, and everything in-between that unfolds across distinct levels (this isn't an open-world game) forming one of a number of included story campaigns.

PCGamesN
Before Midway City, the global economy collapsed due to the unstoppable hacking power of deep learning AI, forcing the dollar into freefall. To stop this from happening again, powerful investment firms helped develop a network architecture that couldn’t be accessed by AI. The solution was to create biological systems based on the human brain to transmit data and hold storage.

Gamereactor
It's a setting described as "happier and brighter" by GTFO management, although they say that with a sly smile, because this is gritty sci-fi with ill-fated mercs going up against the odds while greedy corporate overlords are happy to look away, as long as they stay competitive.

Wired
So, what can players expect from the music in Den of Wolves? “So, there’s going to be elements, of course, that are similar to PayDay,” says Viklund. “But I’m keen on taking it somewhere else in terms of tempo. Making it heavier, slower paced.” He also looks forward to incorporating different elements of percussion inspired by the Pacific Ocean setting.

Shacknews
Den of Wolves is also aiming to follow a live service element, with new content routinely giving players a reason to dive back in. While 10 Chambers has yet to determine whether or not the game will have microtransactions, the studio assures that if it does, they’ll be limited to cosmetic items. Den of Wolves will have dedicated servers and launch on PC first, though the developers have had consoles in mind since the early stages of development.

IGN
There's no release window yet, but 10 Chambers told IGN that, like GTFO, Den of Wolves will be developed via Steam Early Access on PC first, but is being built with console ambitions in mind.
