Devblog: Passionate hugging and how it works in-game
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
Vampire Syndicate is an RPG with adult elements, and by adult elements, I mean explicit sexual depictions of people, androids, vampires, and other assorted humanoids doing freaky things to each other. It is an entirely optional part of the game and can be completely avoided if you want.
Anyways, if you’ve heard of Subverse or otherwise visited the forbidden side of steam, then you’ll probably have a decent idea of what kind of content I’m talking about. Although I should probably add… my game is very different from Subverse, including subject matter and format.
I’ve always been a little weird (I mean, I make H-games), and my games with adult content are generally a little different along with having some more… indie budget art styles.
Going from pixel art RPGmaker games to a Unreal 5 physics powered prawn simulator is a really big step. I even slapped physics on parts that you won’t see for probably 95% of the game.
A lot will be different with Vampire Syndicate, but a lot is also staying the same. Of the changes the biggest will be that the scenes are now in full animated 3D with lots of camera options, including a POV mode which is something I personally like.
What’s staying the same is my unique style of erotica (translation: a lot of text). The content in the game is mostly vanilla and geared towards a hetrosexual male audience, but there will be a mix of flavors much like my last game, Memoirs.
I haven’t finalized what exact mix this will be, but it will probably involve an exceedingly large cast just like Memoirs. In fact, I plan on bringing many characters back.
Anyways, I will be releasing an update to the demo on Steam and Itch when the prototype adult content is finished. I am a little anxious as 3D does require more work and polish than pixel art scenes do, as well as large and complex systems that I am developing myself (probably badly). Not to mention I don’t have an animator besides myself yet.
All of the demo content will involve VARA, which is the mail-order android that a mysterious benefactor has gifted you.
She’s the first companion that you’ll get in the game if you choose to accept her (you can actually reject, return or sell her if you want, which will have its own consequences later on).
I know some of you might be asking why it's not a hot goth vampire GF that you get first thing in the game and well, you have to work up to that.
Relationships and sex in Vampire Syndicate will work the same way as in real life. Some characters will be down for casual sex and flings, others will want something more meaningful, and some like VARA, will just want to please the player.
Characters are not playersexual, meaning they don’t change their sexuality to suit the player at the drop of a hat, so expect not to be able to romance everyone in a single run. The personal dynamics also differ from character to character, especially for older, more experienced personalities like vampires.
As for the actual specific mechanics of the act, I’ll just let you experience that yourself.
That’s it for now, and I’ll put up a post when the demo has been updated. Thanks for reading!
Minor unsolicited rant about adult content in general
I’m very aware that adult content can be very controversial, and the easiest way to get people to stop taking you seriously is when you start adding depictions of uh, “passionate hugging” in your game. It’s also difficult to balance between something that is serious and mature, or just gratifying and maybe even a little juvenile.
So why am I doing this? Well, mostly because my interests lean towards this area (I’m a perv). But also because it’s the kind of content that I would want in an RPG, especially something that isn’t corporate controlled and has the freedom to explore interactive fiction without needing to appeal to the broadest audience possible.
We’ve had gratuitous violence in video games since the medium was born, and don’t get me wrong, that’s something I really enjoy, but it’s strange then that we have this overwhelming stigma towards sexuality. Well, perhaps it’s not so strange at all, but that’s not something I’ll get into here.
