Dev Diary 24#

Dear earthlings,
After a very long and hard coding session which spanning across a few weeks, I am finally done with this mostly quality of life update. Although at it surface this update doesn't seem like much, there are a few new objects added, it is behind the scenes a larger one.

Update
It's crucial to understand that the update released today has introduced significant changes that render all previous save files and every workshop item incompatible with the current version of the game. As a result, I had no choice but to remove them from the game. While this might seem like a drastic measure, it was a necessary step to ensure that any potential bugs or issues would not arise again. This decision wasn't taken lightly, but it was imperative for the smooth functioning of the game, especially considering the upcoming exploration update.

The new update has fundamentally altered how data is saved in the game. Previously, all game data, including save files and configurations, were stored within a single, small ini file. However, this method had its limitations, particularly as the game has grown more complex with each update. With the latest update, the game's data is now distributed across multiple files. This change may seem inconvenient, but it is a strategic move to ensure that the game can handle the addition of more content, specifically the new planets that will soon be available for exploration.

By spreading the data across multiple files, I can better manage the game's performance and stability. This approach reduces the risk of data corruption and minimizes the chances of bugs reappearing. The previous system was becoming increasingly inadequate for the game's expanding scope, and this overhaul was necessary to prepare the game for future updates. The new method of data storage not only supports the current game state but also lays the foundation for future expansions and improvements, making the game more robust and reliable.

In addition to these technical changes, I have introduced a new object called the Terminal. This addition serves multiple purposes, primarily enhancing the storytelling aspect of the game. The Terminal is designed to add a deeper narrative layer to every spaceship, providing players with more context and background as they explore the game's universe. Whether you're in the midst of a mission or tinkering in the editor mode, the Terminal offers a new way to engage with the game's story. It's a tool that can be used creatively by players to develop their own stories or to uncover hidden lore within the game.

The introduction of the Terminal is part of a broader effort to enrich the player's experience by making the game world more immersive and dynamic. As players encounter different ships, each with its own Terminal, they will uncover unique stories and secrets that add depth to the overall narrative. This feature is especially exciting for those who enjoy the storytelling aspect of games, as it opens up new possibilities for exploration and discovery.

Overall, while the latest update may have caused some disruptions with save files and workshop items, these changes were essential for the continued growth and stability of the game. The shift to a more sophisticated data storage system and the addition of the Terminal object are steps towards a more engaging and polished gaming experience. I am confident that these improvements will not only prevent future issues but also enhance the overall enjoyment of the game as it continues to evolve.

Dear earthlings,
The Space Pirate Update sale period comes to an end, and I am really proud! This month has been absolutely amazing for the game and for the community. I want to show you some statistics!

Out of Orbit sold 650 units this month. Which absolutely blows my mind. I bet for some game developers these are peanut numbers, but I am very happy!

Here you can see the graph of this month, especially the last two weeks, when the discount was active you can see a lot of growth.

One reason for this "success" was because of the wishlist conversion rate. Out Of Orbit reached an all-time high of 17%, which also absolutely blows my mind. The other reason is that one of the TikTok videos went absolute insane. It has been watched 125.7K times and still counting, this happened organically. This also gave a massive influx of new players! Out of Orbit also reach the steam store page a couple of times this month, which greatly increased expose of the game.

If things are keep on going on like this, I surely can quit my full-time job as a bed sales manager and make my dream come true, being a full-time game developer. One can dream, right?

Corrupt save files
Due to a bug that now has been fixed, all games that were started before July 30th will be corrupted. I am sorry about this. I always try my best to avoid these kinds of things, because I know that some people will lose a lot of progress. The bug has been fixed and if you start a new game and save that one, it won't be happening again, so it only affects older save files. Again, my sincere apologies, I hope it doesn't change your gameplay experience too much.

Thanks to the community, most of the bugs has been squeezed. There are still some, but the game is pretty stable at the moment. If you find any bugs, please report them to me!
