Major Update #3 - A New Way to Run

[p]Hey Loners,[/p][p] [/p][p]This update introduces a complete overhaul of the early game experience and the core run structure. New boss. New intro. Rebuilt tutorial. Revamped boss fights. A new way to run.[/p][p] [/p][p]Atomic's major update touches almost everything, and we want to walk you through it all.[/p][p] [/p]

Meet Oswald
[p]Diamantina has been waiting long enough.[/p][p][/p][p]
Oswald is here. He commands the arena from above, moves between perches, fights with lightning, lasers, and sound itself. There’s a twist in this fight you’ll have to figure out yourself. We’re not spoiling it.[/p][p] [/p][p]He's the toughest boss in the Zone right now. That's by design.[/p][p][/p][p][/p]

Boss Arenas
[p]Every boss fight now is the way it should be.[/p][p][/p][p]After your Picnic, you'll be transported to a dedicated arena, a purpose-built space where the fight can breathe and feel like the climax it deserves. No more sharing the same ground you spent the last 15 minutes fighting on.
[/p][p][/p][p]The bosses themselves have also been revisited:[/p][p]Octavio → His shield now requires destroying his tentacles to break. More deliberate, more readable.[/p][p]Camille → Goes invulnerable while charging her laser. Goop now targets locations instead of players and may contain healing pickups if you're willing to push into it.[/p][p]Warren → More aggressive. Sand waves now cover the full arena. There is less room to breathe, which is the point.[/p][p] [/p]

The Story Begins Here
[p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p]Atomic Picnic now has an opening. Before anything else, new players will see a brief intro cutscene that sets the stage for the world, the Zone, and why any of this is happening.[/p][p]If you've been here since the beginning of Early Access and Demo, it's a moment to finally see the story you've been living in given a proper beginning. We think it's worth watching.[/p][p] [/p]

A New Kind of Run
[p]From the beginning of Early Access, we knew that how a Picnic progressed was something we'd eventually need to rebuild. Surviving waves and hitting a level target works, but it never quite captured what we wanted a run in Atomic Picnic to feel like: a chaotic, escalating fight where every step means something.

So we rebuilt it.
[/p][p]Runs now move through a sequence of main objectives that shape the arc of a Picnic from start to finish. Each step feeds into the next, and the tension builds while you survive in the Zone bullet hell.[/p][p]Gather Cores - Collect energy from the world around you. XP drops, deposits, pickups, everything contributes.[/p][p][/p][p]Escort Rover - A payload drops from the sky and needs to reach the center of the map. Stay close to keep it moving. Stray too far, and it stops.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Destroy the Pillar - Collect energy bombs and deliver them to a central pillar. Don't sit on them, they won't last forever. Once the pillar goes down, things get loud.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]Defeat the Miniboss - The destruction summons a miniboss immediately. Take it down, and Rover opens a portal straight to the boss arena.[/p][p][/p][p]Every objective step will appear on the end-of-run screen. Completed, failed, or unreached. The run now has a shape you can read, reflect on, and improve at.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]This is the first version of this system. We're treating it as a foundation, and we'll keep shaping it based on how you play and what you tell us. If something feels off, lands wrong, or just makes you go "wait, what?" → Tell us on Discord or the Steam Forums.[/p][p] [/p]

Overtime
[p]Survive past 15 minutes, and the Zone stops being polite.[/p][p][/p][p]The sky shifts. Enemies escalate faster. Elites stop spacing themselves out. The rewards scale too. But if you've been taking your time, you'll feel it.[/p][p] [/p]

A New Beginning for New Players
[p]Getting into Atomic Picnic for the first time is a very different experience now.[/p][p][/p][p]After the intro, new players move through a tutorial covering the core mechanics, followed by a short guided run that walks through a full match. Events, objectives, and progression included. It's playable solo or with friends, and short enough not to overstay its welcome.
[/p][p]Finishing it unlocks new curios, two mementos, and Train Plateau.[/p][p] [/p]

New Enemies
[p]Two new elites are joining the roster.[/p][p]Elite Gunner - Shows up in Train Plateau and Twilight Dam. Fires V-pattern projectiles that bounce twice before disappearing. Give him space.[/p][p][/p][p]Elite Flying Shooter - Found in City of Sands and Diamantina. Fires homing projectiles that explode after a short delay. Don't let him get comfortable above you.[/p][p][/p][p] [/p]

Other Changes Worth Knowing
• [p]Chests now reward based on their source. Main objectives and elite enemies drop curio upgrades and evolutions. Events like Area Hold and Gold Goblin drop stat modifiers. What you chase shapes what you build.[/p]
 • [p]Enemy modifiers are now visible. Small numbers above enemy heads indicate power level. The higher the number, the harder the fight.[/p]
 • [p]Elites now spawn on a fixed timer and drop a chest when defeated.[/p]
 • [p]Auto vacuum activates after defeating a boss. Nothing gets left behind.[/p]
 • [p]Night maps have been temporarily removed while we rework them.[/p]
 • [p]Offerings debuff is now standardized — 40% movement speed for 10 seconds, every time.[/p]
 • [p]Little Mac has improved multiplayer behavior and reduced attack range.[/p]
[p] [/p]

Curio and Evolution Name Changes
[p]We did a full naming pass this update to improve clarity and consistency. If something in your inventory looks unfamiliar, it's the same item — just finally named what it actually does.[/p][p]Curios — name and icon changes:[/p]
Spring Sale

Last but not least, Atomic is participating in the Steam Spring sale with 30% off. Invite your friends to have a Picnic!

A Word from The Team
[p]
This one is different.
[/p][p]Seven months. Over a thousand pieces of feedback. Countless internal arguments, scrapped prototypes, and a lot of rebuilding things we thought were finished. The new objective system alone went through more iterations than we can count. The boss arenas were something we'd wanted since before launch. The guided run came directly from watching new players struggle and deciding we couldn't let that go unaddressed any longer.[/p][p] [/p][p]We're proud of what we're shipping. We also know it's still not perfect. The objective system, especially, is a first version, and we're genuinely curious how you'll receive it. Some of you will love it immediately. Some of you will need a few runs to warm up to it. Some of you may have feedback. We’d like to read them and see how we can improve.[/p][p] [/p][p]Whatever you think, say it. Discord, Steam Forums, wherever you are. We're reading everything, the same as we always have.[/p][p] [/p][p]Thank you for a year and a half of Early Access. Now go find Oswald.[/p][p]— The Atomic Picnic Team[/p]
