Golfing In Aether Update Released [Alpha 1.0.2]

For day two of the Steam Next Fest I looked to get some feedback on the revisions to the out of bounds detection system and have made further tweaks.

I’ve also gone and added color customization to the Ladybug and Bee balls so you can have greater individuality in appearance. Of course this is still a very narrow set of options as this is both an alpha build and a demo so please bear that in mind. Patch Notes

[h2]General[/h2]
  • Added further improvements to the additional layer of out of bounds checks added in 1.0.1. This will ensure all island meshes and their secondary rocks are covered.


[h2]Customization[/h2]
  • Added Ladybug and Bee color options. By default you’ll still see the colors as intended but be able to override them and be creative if you wish. These options will also show with rich presence when using discord like with other ball choices previously.
  • Fixed a few out of alignment pixels to the stripe on the LadyBug icon.


[h2]Environment[/h2]
  • Fixed a Wall gap on level "Crazy Golf".


[h2]Interface[/h2]
  • Added further improvements to detailed scoreboard mode. Now for the level details the par of only the current and previous round will show, plus total strokes are relative to the current hole in the game. This makes easier to see your current score at that given progress.
  • Fixed a totalling display for some levels in hard mode, this didn’t affect players score, just how the levels were displayed.

Thank you to all those of you who have played the game so far or turned out to watch the livestream. I hope to run additional livestreams this week so keep an eye out for those.

This is just a small update with fixes to various things based on feedback recieved or bugs reported. If you like the game and haven't already done so then please add the game to your wishlist :)

Patch Notes

[h2]General[/h2]
  • Added a primitive out of bounds check which will check for the surface you come to a stop on with some levels. This won’t be a do-all solution as this really needs to be developed properly over time.
  • Fixed collisions being a bit sensitive if you launch balls at the same time, it will now take 0.1 seconds for collisions to enable with an additional check state performed to account for latency of some players. Let me know if this is still an issue as it can be revisited.
  • Fixed time awards for out of time events, for some reason full time was awarded. This has no effect on leaderboards as even with these points you’d still be sitting at D Rank.
  • Fixed an exploit relating to xp gain via Practice mode.


[h2]Environment[/h2]
  • Fixed an issue with getting stuck in one of the holes on “Pick A Hole” Level.
  • Fixed minor geometry issues on various levels relating to background scenery.
  • Fixed some walls and out of bounds geometry having the incorrect restitution due to combine mode override being incorrectly handled for these surfaces, this is especially noticeable on “Hole In Fun” level. This was also quite prominent in the lower section of “Crazy Golf”.
  • Fixed placement of the rear wall section in “Go for it” level.


[h2]Interface[/h2]
  • Added rework to the leaderboard screen on scoreboard to better fit players names and be consistent in style with the leaderboard already found via the Practice menu and other menus in general.
  • Added a small performance optimization to the intitial scoreboard opening.
  • Fixed player names extending out of leaderboard entry slots, names will now be cropped if too long to fit.
  • Fixed an ability to hover select leaderboard items on the scoreboard, which has no functional purpose.
  • Fixed having the game menu open while scoreboard appears no longer being able to exit it. Any open menus will be force closed.
  • Fixed some weird totalling going on with total stores vs the par values on the detailed scoreboard mode.
  • Fixed a couple padding issues relating to the session browser.

Difficulty levels and hole out animations

Hole Out Animations

First up is a look at the new end screen 2D animations you'll see for Birdie, Par, Hole in One etc. The idea came about from remembering the short animations you would typically see at some bowling alleys after you knock down however many number of pins; it adds a bit of fun to what otherwise would be pretty much a static graphic or text.

Dynamic Difficulty

The way a standard game works is levels are picked from different pools of early, middle and late. Then the final level in sequence of that set will be a kind-of 'boss' level through being slightly more difficult than normal. One of the changed elements is the flat hole shown above rather than the typically sloped holes found. The difficulty is also indicated by the color of the tee and flag; with red being standard, and yellow indicating its a more challenging stage.

I am looking at allowing Players having the option to play games completely on harder level layouts so there can be the right level of gameplay for everyone.

New Trailer and Discord server available

Gameplay Trailer

Today I want to start with showing off the new trailer! The idea behind this was to show off different players perspectives as they each complete different levels. It's pretty short and i'll definetly be looking to do a longer one at somepoint, but would be curious to know what you all think? :)

New Levels

In the trailer there were new levels that previously haven't been shown off before as well as a good look at the procedural course layouts with the floating islands in the background.
