Happy Halloween Conscripts!

Spooky Salutations!

Happy Halloween conscripts! Heed our warning however, and celebrate with caution as the veil between worlds is at its thinnest during Halloween so, one must be on guard in order to prevent being tainted by the Ink of Ruin!

With that being said, as long as you are knowledgeable on what to look out for, you can protect yourself and your teammates as you venture into the labyrinths. So let's share some of the main things to be aware of on your haunting endeavours.
Inky Miasma
One of the tell tale signs there is a yōkai nearby is a cloud of inky miasma. You can tell the potential strength of your enemy by the colour of the miasma too. If the cloud is black then it is a regular yōkai, however if the cloud is red then you need to approach with caution. Red clouds are for the more powerful alpha yōkai that often have many yōkai underlings so it is likely to be a hard fought battle if you are not ready for it. Make sure you pick your battles wisely with this information!
Punishing Pitfalls
Each labyrinth you enter will likely have traps to be aware of, one of which are pitfalls. Fall in and you will incur damage on your teammates! Some may be disguised with fog or miasma so be sure to always carry torches to light your path clearly.

There are also some pitfalls that can be covered with vines which will entangle you and turn you around causing you not only damage, but also to become lost and that is the last thing you want inside an enemy labyrinth!
Ghostly Encounters
Yōkai are not your only thing to worry about, with the veil between worlds practically non-existent during Halloween, be prepared to encounter ghostly individuals too. Whether they are harmless or not though remains to be seen, so keep your wits about you! Not all of your potential enemies within the labyrinths are there to hurt you...some are simply unlucky with their fate and wish to be left alone and some may even ask for assistance - in which case it is best to stay on their good side where possible!

Enjoy your Halloween celebrations wherever you are in the world conscripts and stay safe in the labyrinths!

Yōkai Profile #1: Tsuchigumo

Greetings Conscripts!

As part of your mission to cleanse the labyrinths of the land, you will encounter many frightening enemy yōkai. Let's explore and learn about the folklore surrounding them in order to arm you with as much knowledge as possible, and give you the advantage to survive the labyrinths unscathed!

Tsuchi translates to Earth, so what better fitting day than today on 'Earth Day' to learn about the tsuchigumo yōkai!
About
Tsuchigumo or 'ground spider' in translation, are monstrous giant spider yōkai. You will find these yōkai deep within forests or mountains waiting to ambush passing travellers. They make their habitat from woven silk web from within which the Tsuchigumo will use illusions and trickery to lure it's prey - you won't know what has hit you until it is too late to escape!
Folklore
There are many legends and folklore tales surrounding the Tsuchigumo yōkai, but almost all include the various illusions that lured their victims.

There are accounts of the famed warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu of the Heian era being poisoned by a Tsuchigumo disguised as a servant boy, or in some retellings captured by a disguised monk offering aid during a bout of illness.

This wouldn't be the last time the warrior Yorimitsu would encounter this yōkai either, for later it is said that a Tsuchigumo in the shape of a woman general, marched a yōkai army to fight Yorimitsu and his men. He was not fooled however, and attacked the general first resulting in the army disappearing and another victory over the tricky Tsuchigumo!

Armed with this new knowledge be careful as you explore the labyrinths, conscripts! The terrifying Tsuchigumo are lying in wait for you somewhere...so be on guard and protect your fellow teammates as you sanctify the land!

Story Time: The Ink of Ruin Disaster

Gather round Conscripts,

Let us recall the story of the 'Ink of Ruin' disaster together. One must equip oneself with knowledge before the fight begins if they wish to succeed!
The Story Begins...
It arrived with no herald, nor fanfare. A dark corruption, seeping into the fibre of our world as if ink had stained the six lands.

Our once vibrant mountains dulled and our rivers ran black, even the heavens were cloaked in a foreboding shadow. The sun’s lustre paled, and a stagnant decay cloyed at the very souls of all who drew breath.

This sentient twisted miasma became known as the Ink of Ruin.

The blight drove the lucky mad, death’s knell ringing in their ears. The unlucky however, mutated into nightmarish fiends, existing only to terrorize those who remained.

Corpses rose from their graves, prowling for unwitting souls to join them in the shadows. In the grip of the Ink, even inanimate objects could become savage demented beasts.

The people of the land fled the corruption of the Ink, forbidding any return. They called these blighted lands Labyrinths.

Those who escaped the calamity lived a meagre, restless existence, terrified of the encroaching blight, never knowing peace.

But a sole bastion of hope remained. One town that vowed to fight the Ink to the bitter end. Its name? Ido.

This walled fortress was unique. The constant moon bathed the land below in an eternal glow, protecting it with powerful magical barriers.

Ido’s town council, along with its top occult scholars, sought a way to halt the progression of the Ink. They hoped to locate and eliminate the source of the corruption before it was too late.

For the longest time, Ido’s walls remained closed under the draconian laws of Tokinokuni. But eventually, with the permission of the governing Shogunate, the town began to accept refugees from across the broken land.

Those with martial, magical, or monastic expertise were conscripted for a critical mission into one of the inky labyrinths that writhed outside the castle walls.

They were to use their skills to fight the spreading corruption.

These brave, foolish adventurers were charged with eradicating the Ink. Burdened with glorious purpose, they were granted the title…Blightbane.

Where did the Ink of Ruin come from? Can we eliminate its blighted touch? Is there a way to save the damned souls of this cursed land?
