Cloud Saves are enabled!

[p]Hi everyone,[/p][p][/p][p]Just wanted to let you know that Virtue's Heaven now has Steam Cloud saves enabled and that they should work.[/p][p][/p][p]However, I'm just one person who only has access to one working PC right now, so even though I did as many test as I could on my end and I'm confident that things should work, I've also never done this kind of stuff before and that means there could always be something I missed, or didn't consider.[/p][p][/p][p]So in that regard, please let me know if you notice anything weird happening to your save files, especially for those of you who play the game on different devices.[/p][p][/p]

A list of fixes

Hi everyone,

First of all, thanks to everyone who was kind enough to buy a copy of this game so far.

You may have noticed that I updated the game a few times over the past week. Most of these were fixes to specific, critical issues, that didn't warrant a separate news post for each one, but I think after a week it's a good idea to give you all quick run-down of them:

  • Fixed an issue in one of the later areas where the camera would end up in a place where it was not supposed to be
  • Fixed an issue where the player might end up stuck in the floor at the start of the final area, if you were to pause the game at an inopportune moment
  • Fixed the "1 million points" achievement not being registered
  • (Hopefully) fixed several occasions where the player might lose the ability to go through doors
  • (Hopefully) fixed Vale teleporting himself out of the arena when he tries to parry you.
  • Removed some debug numbers that showed you the defense values of Vale's final form
  • Fixed some radical attacks not being able to destroy prisons
  • changed how the game window gets positioned when you change its size (only applies when you don't play in fullscreen)
  • Fixed the game crashing when you hold down the 'select' button for several seconds. It now restarts the game, which is a debug input that I still mean to remove from the released build, but keep forgetting to do.

Please, if you run into any issues, let me know! There's a bug report thread in the game's forums, but you can also reach me via other means, if you don't want to post there. Even if something just looks strange to you, let me know.

Also, I'm still looking into getting Steam Cloud support to work for this game, but a cursory glance yesterday made me worried that it might involve having to re-write the game's save system, which I hope isn't the case.

Virtue's Heaven is out!

Hi everyone!

I honestly didn't think this would ever happen, but Virtue's Heaven is finally finished and released!
I'm extremely exhausted right now, but feel free to post any issues you might run into, or bugs and other sorts of problems in the game's steam forum and I'll promise I get around to addressing them as soon as I'm not a complete mess.

Especially those who followed this game for several years now, thank you so much for your patience.

Anyway, in case anyone is interested about some of the background for this game, I wrote a bit about it over on my blog:

A look at the 90(!) months it took me to make this game:

A detailed breakdown of the game's movement system, its inspirations, why it works the way it does and the various issues I encountered along the way:

I have some more stuff planned that I would like to talk about and share. I even want to write some user guides for the game, just to give folks a bit more resources. But that's not for today, I hope you all understand.

Demo Update

Hi everyone!

I recently noticed that the Demo is actually fairly outdated in some places, compared the where the full game is right now, so I thought I might as well push out a newer version, to bring it a bit more in line again.

There are some systemic changes that have been made, but most of those only really come into affect in the full game. I guess the biggest change are some of the visual updates, some slight tweaks to the boss fights (at least with those that you have access to), the fact that you can now hug all of your friends AND that each of them has their own special attack.

Aside from that, most of what I said in the initial announcement still applies, so please give it a look, if you haven't already:

Virtue's Heaven Demo and release date information

Hi everyone!

I can finally announce that Virtue’s Heaven will be released on May 20th 2025 and to celebrate(?) this milestone, I went ahead and released a completely new demo for it as well.
The demo should take somewhere between 20-60 minutes to play (probably more towards the 20 minute range tbh) and features the first bigger area of the game, as well as some side paths.

Virtue’s Heaven is a bit particular in some ways, so I want point some things out for the demo that I feel might be worth pointing out, just in case people run into them:

  • Please do yourself a favour and play the game with a controller. Virtue’s Heaven does have fully customizable keyboard controls, but from prior feedback and my own experiences, it’s not a very pleasant game to play that way. Should you happen to play it with a keyboard anyway and happen to find a setup that works for you, please let me know.

  • Steam says the game is only playable via an Xbox controller, but from what I can tell, it should work with any kind of controller. It might be that you need to rebind some buttons, but the game should at least register it. If something isn’t working, let me know and I’ll look into it.

  • A fairly important part of the tutorial seems to be buggy. If you are stuck at this spot:

You need to attack the wall/destroy the lanterns in that area until those five bars in your top UI are full and then press the “charge attack” button (default is ‘B’ on an Xbox controller) while standing relatively close to it.

  • In general: There are no upgrades that gate progress in the game. If you are stuck somewhere that means that you haven’t found the way forward yet, not because you are lacking a specific piece of equipment. The game doesn’t work like that.

  • I don’t quite know yet if your progress in the demo will carry over into the full game, so please don’t expect it right now.

  • If you’re trying to hug one of your friends and they just vanish, that’s because I haven’t done their animations yet, not because they secretly resent you.

  • Any feedback and bug reports are welcome, however unless it’s something very critical, I probably won’t spend a lot of time fixing things in the demo itself. The full game is supposed to come out in three months and I need to make sure that I get everything right until then.

With all that being said: I hope you all have a good time with the game. It’s been a real struggle to get it into shape and I’m both very excited and incredibly scared to share it with people.

P.S.: Let me know should you run the demo on a Steam Deck. It should work (all my other games do), but I have no means to test it myself.
