As you know - in Affogato - you play the role of a sorceress managing a bustling café in the enchanting city of Arorua, interacting with a diverse array of customers to learn about troubles and woes. You will then venture into the deepest recess of their minds to engage in epic reverse tower defense battles to defeat the inner demons that torment them.

In this article, we’re zooming in on our reverse tower defense battle mechanic. We will discuss what makes it special and how we have designed it to give you a unique gameplay experience in Affogato!

Before that, let’s take a step back to the traditional tower defense genre. Typically, tower defense games have a simple idea - build a strong line of defense and halt the advance of enemy troops. With each wave, you would have to identify weak spots and bolster your defenses, making sure no enemy gets through. It's a thrilling setup, one that we've grown to enjoy!



However, here’s an exciting twist for you to think about.. Imagine being on the other side of this battlefield for once. Picture yourself not as the steadfast defender, but as the bold attacker, the one who takes the battle to the enemy. Instead of passively awaiting the onslaught, you’re actively dismantling defenses, breaking lines, and leading the charge. This is the core essence of the reverse tower defense battles in Affogato, a unique approach that flips the traditional concept on its head!

The Chariot is an armored Witch Card that takes damage for the team!
The Strength charges up each hit and unleashes a devastating strike once fully charged!

At the heart of these mental battles in Affogato lies your arsenal of weapons called the Witch Cards, a selection of powerful allies waiting to be summoned. Each Witch Card possesses its own unique abilities and powers, allowing you to customize your battle strategy. For example, you might require a robust armored warrior to hold the line and absorb enemy damage at critical moments. Or perhaps a swift striker who charges ahead, throwing the enemy's defenses into disarray. This is where your decision-making and in-the-moment adaptations truly come to life in Affogato!

Strategize your battle path wisely!

Navigating through these battles isn’t just about your offensive line-up, though. To secure victory in each stage, you’ll need to outwit the defenses which take the form of enemy “towers”. Unlike the traditional single-path approach often seen in tower defense games, we’ve spiced things up with multiple pathways in each stage, adding a twist of strategy and unpredictability to your game plan. Choosing a path could be the difference between resounding victory and crushing defeat, so make sure you strategize it well!

Hello Magic Apprentices!

We hope you're all doing well. We're excited to bring you another edition of our Development Progress & Update series. In this post, we will be discussing updates on a new narrative story arc, voice acting integrations, and our ongoing efforts to optimize game difficulty for Affogato.

[h2]Crafting Our New Story Arc[/h2]

We've been working hard recently on one of the plot points for the game. A new character has popped into the world of Affogato's cafe - a spirited indie game developer working on a game where the key theme is 'delivering goods'. This charming new addition is our playful homage to a famous game developer and his much-loved debut work which is based on the same theme.

In the process of crafting this character and her narrative arc, we've taken the liberty of weaving in snippets of our own experiences. As indie game developers, we face a plethora of challenges and victories, from the euphoria of solving a complex programming issue to the strain of long debugging sessions. Through this character, we've tried to encapsulate some of these ups and downs, infusing a piece of our journey into the heart of Affogato.

We're excited to see how this character will resonate with you, as her story reflects not just the journey of a fictional game developer, but our own personal and collective experiences as well. We wanted to do more than just share a character; we wanted to share a slice of our life, our passion, and our perseverance in the field of game development.

[h2]Integration of Voice Acting[/h2]

Next, we are now in the process of integrating voice acting in three languages: English, Chinese, and Japanese. We are diligently finalizing the script, paying special attention to the subtleties of each language to ensure cultural accuracy and relatability. We are excited for the VO to breathe life into Affogato's characters, unfolding their unique stories and personal journeys. We also hope for the effort to deepen the emotional connection between you and the vibrant characters that inhabit the world of Affogato.

[h2]Game Difficulty Balancing[/h2]

Next, we've also received feedback that some battles could be quite challenging, and we're working to strike a balance, ensuring the game is exciting without being overly difficult In Affogato. For example, we have incorporated a variety of witch cards that you will discover as you progress in the game. You would be able to upgrade them and create different lineup combinations, making battles more manageable and enjoyable.

Sera shares a fascinating past connection with Affogato, and as you progress through the game, their intriguing bond gradually comes to light, keeping you engrossed and eager to discover more about their intertwined story.

Recently, she has adopted the persona of a high school girl, taking on the role of student council president, which leaves one wondering about her motives behind this. In addition, Sera's expertise in witchcraft is well renowned in Arorua City.
