B-17 The Mighty 8th Redux Dev Blog #3

Welcome aboard followers, new and old.

In this short dev blog, we are giving you a glimpse of the cockpit, answering more of your questions and we have a few new comic pages for you.
The cockpit: A work in progress
We are excited to share a work in progress render of the cockpit.
Questions from Discord
Our community manager has continued to gather questions from our followers on Discord (link) and other social locations. I’ve put those questions to the developers, and I’ve got another round of answers for you.

Are the ground textures and terrain getting updated?

The ground textures are all procedurally generated so we're hoping to improve then. The terrain may get slight improvements through increased triangle counts.

Will we still be able to customize the skins and nose-art for our bombers like before?

Yes, there will be a selection of nose art to choose from

Will the formations increase in size?

Yes, the goal is to increase the formation sizes but how much will depend on performance.
The Regensburg Raid Part 2
Ok, on the comic front we have done a little bit of renumbering as we have added a “Introductory page” this page focuses on Beirne Lay Jr, whose work you will likely be familiar with as a writer and maritime documentarian. You may have even seen his name appear in the credits of movies in television shows you’ve watched over the years – I’m showing my age here.

For those of you who missed pages 2 through 4, you can find them in our first blog, these pages have been updated and are worth a revisit.

We are pleased to share page 5 now.
Masters of the Air
In other exciting B17 news, how great is it to see that “Masters of the Air” will be coming to Apple TV in the new year. If you have not had a chance to read the press release, you can find it here.

Until Next Time,

Keep those questions coming and let your friends know we’re back!

B-17 The Mighty 8th Redux Dev Blog #2

Welcome aboard followers, new and old.

In this Dev Blog, we are going to answer some of your questions and show some more progress on the game. If you’ve been hanging out for some gunner stations, this one is for you.
Comparison Shots the Top Gunner
Today we can share the progress the team has made on the Top Gunner position. Here we can show you the comparison shot from the gunner’s perspective – do note that the aircraft you see in the distance has yet to be replaced with the new model.

Our artists are also happy to share with you some of their modeling work on the Top Turret.
The Ball Turret
One of the scariest seats on the B-17 is currently being brought into Redux. We are happy to share the progress on this.

Here is how that currently looks in-game. Do bear in mind that what you see outside the aircraft is not final. As the aircraft exteriors and terrain is updated, we will share that progress with you.
Continued Progress on the Nose
One of the areas we have continued to focus on is the navigator’s table, where we have incorporated a new map. You will notice a few other changes as well.

Navigator progress

For fans of navigation, we are also happy to share some maps from our collection that would have been used by crews during WW2. The first map is Lubeck, followed by Bolzano and Bordeaux.
Questions from Discord
Our community manager has been gathering questions from our followers on Discord (link) and other social locations.

We will answer a few of these questions with each post. Keep the questions coming.

Are we able to fly the fighters as well like in the original? And if so, are new German fighters planned like the Bf-110 and many more? Are we able to fly the fighters as well like in the original? And if so, are new German fighters planned like the Bf-110 and many more?

We are working to bring the fighter aircraft into the Redux. Precisely how many and what models will be in the initial Early Access release will be announced closer to the release. There are currently not any plans for additional aircraft, but that’s a good suggestion.

Will there be more mechanical failures will the crew have more tasks like the radio operator and navigator?

Currently, there are no additional failures being considered, but this is another great suggestion. I think we might prod the team working on “The Bloody 100th” to increase the emergencies a player can face though.

How will the movement system work? Will it be like the original TME with only clicking through the positions or are we able to walk through the B-17 in first-person?

We are being true to the original game in this respect, so you won’t be able to move through the B17 in first-person view. However, this will be possible in The Mighty 8th VR.
Comic Pages Delayed
We wanted to hold off on sending through this update until we were 100% happy with the next pages of the comic, but you can look forward to those in an interim post in the coming weeks.
Thanks for your support so far...
Thanks for joining us for the latest update, I look forward to updating you again soon. Keep those questions coming.

B-17 The Mighty 8th Redux Dev Blog #1

Welcome aboard followers, new and old.

In this devblog we will show you some comparison shots between the original and the redux and let you know a little more about the team that is working on the Project and the planned early access release date.
Comparison Shots Office
Each update we will share some comparison shots with an original as reference. One of the first things you will notice is a change in aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9, the next thing you will be able to appreciate is the additional detail the artists are putting into the new scenes. Below are a few comparison shots of the current work-in-progress for you to soak in.

First up is the “Corridor”. From here you can go into the Briefing Room, Bomber Commander’s Office – and if you have permission, the Squadron Commanders Office and the Operation’s Room.

Next up is the Bomber Commander Office, where you can check in on your crew files.

Redux

The Squadron Commander’s office is a little more organised and contains files for the crews and bombers along with an in and out tray for your messages.

The final image we are sharing from the base in this update is the Operations Room. Here a Squadron commander can carefully plan bombing missions.
Comparison Shot B-17 Interior
In the original game the interiors of the B-17 where a mixture of the B-17 Type G and Type F. So, whilst we are striving for authenticity there are still some concessions, we are making to ensure the game remains true to the original.

The first interior from B-17 we are sharing is the Nose, where you will see the famous Norden Bombsight, Navigation table, you will notice the cheek turrets are missing in the redux image, but rest assured they will be there in the final game.
Team Updates
The other piece of exciting news and that we are happy to announce is that two members of the original development team at Wayward Designs have joined us on this journey. Chris Keegan, who was the programming director on the original game and Ken Hall, who assisted with many roles within the art, technical art, and research department for the original game. They also worked on many features which did not make it into the final game, and we are hoping to share those features with you in future updates.
Q4 Early Access Release
The game will be entering Early Access in the fourth quarter of 2023. The goal is to have the main campaigns playable with continued improvements and additional new features and campaigns to be added during the Early Access period.
The Regensburg Raid Part 1:
This week we are sharing the first three pages of a comic that we are working as a companion piece to the B-17 games, check future dev blogs for more pages.
Thanks for your support so far…
If you’ve read this far. Thanks for sticking with it. Don’t forget to Wishlist the game and follow us to see future devblogs. If you have any friends and family who were fans of the original, please feel free to spread the world. We’d love to see them in skies at the end of the year too.
