The future of Fablecraft, updated đź”®

Greetings, Mages! 🧙

It’s been an adventure-filled week for the Riftweaver team and Fabelcraft, hasn’t it? Yesterday, we launched our first one-shot adventure, Object of my Affection. It was created by Felicia Day, and partnering with her was fantastic.

We also launched the Brawler Collection–it features 14 new foes and six new animated battlemaps for GMs to use in homebrew campaigns or within our pre-written adventures as their parties veer away from the planned course.

In this week’s dev vlog and blog, we’re looking toward the future. We’re ready to unveil the newest iteration of the Fablecraft development roadmap, and we can’t wait to share what we’ve introduced as we discuss our plans.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Let’s begin.
It was a marvelous livestream!
Before looking forward, we need to look back. To mark the launch of Object of my Affection, Felicia Day hosted a livestream of the adventure on her Twitch. Riftweaver Narrative Designer Claire Purcell was the GM, and Felicia stood as a player alongside SWARM (the voice of Kai) and Anne the Gnome.

Here’s the VOD of the stream.
Reminder: this is a living roadmap; it will change
As an Early Access game, we take listening and responding to feedback from our players and community seriously. That’s why we collect and triage feedback from Steam, Discord, and our feedback board. We use that feedback to help our development plans, but we have a vision for Fablecraft that we’re adhering to, too.

This roadmap represents a combination of our vision and the community’s wants. It also represents roughly the next six months of work.

Let’s start with what’s new. Spoiler alert: it all comes from community feedback.
The Custom GM Guide is coming
Players have been asking us to open up the Game Master Guide for custom adventure creation since launch, and we’re ready to place it on our roadmap. We’ve always intended to do this, but we’re glad players want it as much (or more than) we do.

The longer-term plans here are also exciting: we intend to implement a way for players to share and, perhaps, sell the adventures they create with a user-generated marketplace. That’s far off, though, and isn’t quite ready for a spotlight on the roadmap.
More in-game lore
Sometimes, feedback can be hard to receive. Players might not like a design choice or an element of UI that someone within our team loves. Other times? Getting feedback feels great. Players want more lore and context within Fablecraft, and that means they’re enthused by the world so far.

You’ll notice that we’ve added an in-game lore book to our plans for 2025. We have plans to make it possible for players and GMs to dig into Mythan culture and a touch of history surrounding the Shattering, and we’re excited to have it entirely in-game for all to discover.
Quick, write that down
One of the most requested items on our feedback board is something we’ve been pushing for internally, too. A place for personal notes is planned for Q4 2024.

What you see below is only a proposed design of what this notes section could look like, but this is what we’ve been cooking up so far. It will likely change between now and release, but the functionality is in progress.
Location pinging is coming, too
Finally, we’ve added another of Fablecraft's most requested features to our roadmap, which is also scheduled for Q4 2024.

We’re working on a location pinging tool that will let players and GMs call attention to a specific spot on the environment or battlemap everyone’s looking at. This should be helpful for environmental questions, positioning callouts, and strategy.

Thanks for peering into the future with us, Mages! Be sure to join us on Discord and talk all things Fablecraft and TTRPG while you look for your next party.

Tales of Fablecraft v0.18.1 - Hotfix Patch Notes

Hi, Mages! 🧙

v0.18.1 of Fablecraft is a small hotfix that addresses a crash discovered after today's update.
Bug Fixes
• We fixed a crash in the Solo Play demos related to video rendering issues for Intel-based PCs.

Object of My Affection, created by Felicia Day, is available now

Hello, Mages! 🧙

Object of My Affection, a lengthy one-shot from the mind of Felicia Day, and the Brawler Collection are now available in Fablecraft. These two premium items arrive with v0.18.0 of Fablecraft, and you can find the complete patch notes at the base of this update.
Step right up to this weird and wonderful carnival
Will you help to mend a broken heart? From the extraordinary mind of Felicia Day comes Object of My Affection.

Felicia Day lends her voice to the adventure alongside Erika Ishii, Anjali Bhimani, Jonah Ray, and Jeffrey Lewis. The all-star cast absolutely kills it.

This lengthy one-shot includes a complete GM Guide, four animated environments, two animated battlemaps, five characters/creatures, one music track, and nine inventory items. With our internal playtests, we’re marking the adventure around four-to-five hours in length, but that playtime will really depend on your group.

Object of My Affection is available in the in-game marketplace for $9.99.
The Brawler Collection is finally here
The Brawler Collection includes six animated battlemaps—four of which feature two variants—and 14 foes. The foes offer complete combat kits with unique abilities that create fun metas and synergies for GMs to experiment with.

The Wreckweed, for example, boasts a Whipwreck attack that deals damage in a straight line and spawns Flotsam in empty spaces. With Beach Sweep, the Wreckweed’s other ability, the monster absorbs the spawned Flotsam to gain an advantage die before dealing damage in an arc.

A quick note: We originally had the Brawler Collection slated for early September. Unfortunately, our VFX team got sick and we had to delay. The Brawler Collection has some temporary VFX work in-place for some of the creatures. We will bring that temp work up to our standards in an upcoming hotfix as our VFX team is cruising through the remainder now.

The Brawler Collection is available for $14.99.

We hope you enjoy the new adventure and collection, Mages! If you’re looking for a group, head over to our Discord.
The Complete Tales of Fablecraft v0.18.0 Patch Notes

Features
• Object of My Affection is now available in the in-game marketplace.
 • The Brawler Collection is also now available in the in-game marketplace.
 • All Battlemaps, across the game, are now animated.
 • Ever get confused about targeting? We updated some of the UI elements associated with range and targeting in combat.
 • We performed a lot of refactoring work on the layering in our game and code; this doesn’t have a ton of external implications other than smoother game delivery. We just thought it was cool to share, okay?
 • We added links to safety tools in the Campaign Settings card you’ll see during campaign creation.
 • We did even more optimization, making animated backgrounds and battlemaps a bit smaller in file size and more performant.
 • We made some smaller updates to the scene tour new players see when they enter a battlemap for the first time.
 • We added a bunch of new combat VFX and SFX across the game.
 • Some users were reporting that they couldn’t actually buy anything from the marketplace because their Steam overlay was disabled. We’ve added a warning message when this happens so folks don’t get stuck.
Bug Fixes
• Some Mythans among us may have been hit with seemingly random white flashes while viewing fullscreen items. Not a flashbang, just a bug. It’s been addressed.
 • We fixed some issues related to account log-ins. If you were having a problem with this, let us know if it’s still happening after this update.
 • Some users reported that their custom portraits didn’t display properly after upload. This has been fixed!
 • Combat abilities, openers, and talents will better auto-slot as higher levels are reached.
 • The inventory in the Game Master Guide got a round of visual polish.
Known Issues
• There’s an issue related to players undoing their movement while GMs simultaneously remove tokens that causes problems with combat in the battlemap scenes. This one is a bit harder to run into, but if you notice any battle problems we’d appreciate the note on Steam or our Discord.
 • VO from the GM occasionally stops playing before the audio is done.
 • Using the Galaxy Token Skin on large enemies will sometimes cause a light to flash near the top of the token.
 • There are some smaller layering issues that we’re still solving when it comes to opening character sheets and side trays. These will be resolved in a future update!

Tales of Fablecraft v0.17.3 - Hotfix Patch Notes

Hello, Mages! 🧙

Some users on our Discord and feedback site spotted two bugs this week that we figured we could squash before the weekend officially begins. This hotfix addresses them.

As always, thank you for reporting these bugs to our team! We're happy to have them fixed.
Bug Fixes
• Players reported a strange issue that made it impossible to view character sheets and temporarily broke the UI. This bug has been fixed.
 • We also fixed a bug that broke the movement and attack range indicators displayed during combat.

Come one, come all to Fablecraft’s next adventure

Prepare yourselves, Mages. 🧙 There’s something strange about the carnival coming to Mythas next week in our newest Tales of Fablecraft adventure.

What's weird about the carnival? [carnival organ sounds] What's the adventure called? [organ sounds intensify] And what mysterious special guest wrote it? [the organ sounds are just ridiculous now]

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Step right up as we reveal the who, what, where, and when of it all.
The next adventure is Object of My Affection, created by Felicia Day!
We hope you have your ticket for the upcoming one-shot presented by Fablecraft, Object of My Affection.

This strange and wonderful tale was written by Felicia Day, who you might know from The Guild, Critical Role, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return, and so much more!

We’re calling Object of My Affection a one-shot, though it’s on the longer side for a one-shot adventure. We’ve been playtesting it a lot internally, and it typically runs us around four hours. That might be one sitting for some folks, and others may spread it out across two or three sessions. That’s up to you and your group.

This tale is a little bit of a love story, a little bit hilarious, and only slightly creepy. Players will navigate a carnival, enter the Tunnel of ToortĂĽr, and meet a cast of characters as you unravel the mystery surrounding this collection of attractions.

Object of My Affection will be available in the in-game marketplace starting Thursday, September 26th, 2024, for $9.99.
Here’s what the adventure includes
Of course, Object of My Affection features a complete Game Master Guide by Felicia Day for GMs to lead their parties through the carnival and beyond–where that beyond is... we’ll keep it for you and your players to discover.

The GMG for this adventure includes some fantastic voice-over work, which we’ll detail in a moment, and a pile of wonderful assets for use both within and outside of Object of My Affection.

Those assets are:
 • 4 Environments
 • 2 Battlemaps
 • 4 Characters and Creatures
 • 6 Inventory Items
 • 1 Music Track
What about that incredible VO cast?
Not only was Object of My Affection created by Felicia Day, but she also lends her voice to the Game Master Guide for your party’s listening pleasure. An incredible cast joins her!

This fun poster features the cast of voice talent who are bringing Object of My Affection to life.

Their work for this one-shot is special, and we can’t wait for you to hear all of next week.
We’re celebrating the launch of Object of My Affection with a special livestream
To mark the launch of this one-shot, Felicia Day is hosting a livestream play of the adventure. Obviously, if you’re worried about spoilers, you’ll want to steer clear. But! If you plan to GM this one for your friends, this stream might be a great place to see how a party explores the adventure itself.

The cast for this stream is also super fun! Please note that the cast is currently in flux and may not be final.
The stream is slated to begin on Thursday, September 26th, at 1pm PT on Felicia Day’s Twitch channel.
“What about the Brawler Collection?”
Yes! We hear you! And we have good news.

The Brawler Collection is due to release with Object of My Affection on September 26th. What’s taken so long?

If you don’t know this already, Riftweaver is a small studio. We have two folks who build the 3D VFX for our spells and abilities. Earlier this month, they got sick and had to take some time to rest and recover. That’s a big part of what delayed the Brawler Collection.

When it releases, it’ll arrive with some temporary VFX that we’ll be updating as soon as we can. We didn’t want to delay the collection anymore, so we’re delivering it next week. Thank you for your patience and understanding on this!
In case you missed it, we got to today’s news with some fun teasers
We’ve been teasing the reveal of Object of My Affection on Discord and our socials all week, but we figured it would be fun to share some of those teasers here with you for a good laugh as we wrap up this week’s post. Find them all below.

If you want to see these teasers as they are dropped, be sure to join our Discord and follow us on social.

See you soon, Mages!
