Last week we released a dev diary showing a small, curved and fancy glimpse of the upcoming patch 1.6

Forty-four new perks, complete item overhaul, and more. We intentionally didn't reveal the details, but promised to make a separate post from the game designer if the diary got enough questions in the comments.
We got 9 pages of comments, so the post is definitely happening. But why stop there? We haven't chatted in a while, so the next "Game Design Notes" will not only cover the mechanics, but also include a whole Q&A section.

We're collecting questions in the comments under this post, in the comments under the dev diary, and on our Discord server in the #qa channel until September 12th.

I'll be answering the most interesting questions along with the game designer and other team members. The authors of the three best questions will get keys for the DLC coming out at the end of September. That's the so-far-hidden pre-order DLC with three items. Though soon it'll have considerably more.

Q&A is all great and fun, but let's not forget that the third season of Steam Workshop just started recently. In December, I'll award the best mod author $1000.

New hero for free play mode with a high level of polish matching the three base heroes. The author needs no introduction. You'll hear more about him from me this year.

I'm against big ships and fleets in the game. So it's great that there are mods covering this need for the fairly large cohort of players who care about this sort of gameplay.

Cool idea that improves one of our mechanics. Candidate for integration.

The second season had more mods than the first. The third ALREADY has more than the second. I like this momentum, and I plan to do everything to keep things heating up.

Though not everything's perfect.

Dev Diary VII

Ahoy!


  • Open beta for patch 1.6 launches September 26th.
  • More changes than in 1.5
  • Starting the new game will NOT be required.

These past couple months our studio has been running at full throttle, collaborating with the best Steam Workshop creators, and just the other day we finally filled our last vacancy - a position I'd been trying to fill for a year and a half.

The result is an absolutely insane pace of development, so in the upcoming patch you'll see new mechanics, quests, ships, locations, and a massive QoL feature package that makes the game much more user firendly and fun.

But today we'll showcase only two new gameplay mechanics and one QoL feature. We won't go into detail yet - you'll see everything for yourselves soon enough.

Forty-four new perks. Caribbean Legend now features proper character building and replay value.



Off the top of my head, that's at least 8 completely different builds and countless hybrids.
My favorite: sharpshooter-alchemist with exotic weapons.

Obviously, perk points are now distributed differently, and we've added several new combat, economy, and naval mechanics to the game. The biggest one - complete overhaul of all items in the game.


Every item now has a set of descriptors or tags - properties that provide different bonuses and stack nicely with each other and with the new perks. In other words, the game now has item sets and huge room for experimentation. I doubt there are any useless items or crafting recipes left in the game now.


Of course, we've written a new character generator, and every NPC - from sailors to bosses, purchases perks to match their equipment. Given how the combat system will change in 1.6, you'll need to learn to identify enemy archetypes and fight each one differently.

Finally, my favorite new QoL mechanic in the game. Every UI element now highlights and displays tooltips on mouse hover. Thanks to this feature, all interfaces in the game have suddenly become more convenient, and the game itself - clearer and more intuitive.


No more guessing what does what: just hover your cursor and get the full breakdown.

And... that's all for today. I could tell you about the investment mechanics, finance window, new blocking system and backstab attacks, as well as the huge new quest, but 1.6 release is just a month away and the workload isn't getting any lighter.

Mod of the Season 2

Ahoy!

In the second season of our Steam Workshop series, the winner is Girls Overhaul mod by TemplarFulga!

We congratulate the winner, award the well-deserved $1000 prize money, thank him for the quality content, and ask for more.

We're starting the third season! There was a moment when, following the results of the second season, heated discussions arose. We've collected your feedback and decided to make several changes to the rules and additionally highligh important points.
Third season rules:
  • All mods released from August 1 to December 31, 2025 are eligible.
  • The author or authors of the winning mod receive $1000 in prize money.
  • Author or authors are considered to be Steam users listed on the mod page.
  • Mods that violate any copyrights in any way are not eligible.
  • Victory criteria are determined personally by me (Joruba) and are not disclosed. This way, we protect participants from vote manipulation and any unfair behavior.
  • Once a month I will highlight favorites in the "Mod of the Month" news.
  • The contest is purely a private initiative of BlackMark Studio, aimed at supporting the Caribbean Legend Steam Workshop community. The contest is not an obligation or any other form of compulsion for BlackMark Studio.

With joy and pride, albeit a couple of months late, I announce that BlackMark Studio has entered into strategic cooperation with two popular authors: Pvt. Joker and Apdayk. Their works and more are being developed and will be integrated into the game under our creative control and with our close participation.
Of course, I can't help but once again note and thank sht8694 and MONKEY HOLE, without whom the Chinese localization would have come out much later.

Now Supports Simplified Chinese



大家好!


We’ve shipped an update: fixed several bugs (including an issue that let you remove yourself from a ship position), improved the game’s font handling, and added support for Simplified Chinese localization.

Caribbean Legend now supports Chinese glyphs, and the entire in‑game text has been translated. I originally planned to get this done by Q2 2026, but thanks to the tireless work of the Chinese player community, you can play it today.
