Roadmap part 1

2026 Roadmap
Part 1
[p][/p][p]Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, let’s review what we will be working on. Please note that some items will not be released until after 2026.
[/p][p]Dynamic Campaign. Much of the remaining work involves AI aircraft improvements on both a strategic and tactical level. This ranges from logical construction of strike packages based on the target, available resources, and enemy defenses, to more tactical concerns, such as understanding package attack timelines, responses to air and ground-based defenses, and actions to take due to losses and a changing mission environment.[/p][p][/p][p]Closely tied to this is the design, implementation of both a post-early access Dynamic Campaign Creation tools to devise your own campaigns, but also the client-side user interface that will allow players to select and view fragmentation tasks from the Air Tasking Order (ATO), set strategic objectives manually or automatically, view the strategic disposition of forces and resources, and configure your flight and DTC.[/p][p][/p][p]The ground combat element of the Dynamic Campaign is also undergoing extensive AI development which includes ground force interactions in attack and defense, the correct use of artillery within large formations, inclusion of the morale system that factors the level of losses that could initiate a retreat or rout.
[/p][p]In conjunction with the development, internal testing is ongoing at various scales with different ground and air force compositions across all DCS maps. From small-scale confrontations along borders with aviation support, to full-scale conflicts utilizing all available forces, both the strategic and tactical AI and interface are in deep development and testing. [/p][p][/p][p]This effort has been underway for approximately five years, and substantial progress has been made. Despite taking much longer than we ever expected we are meeting our expectations and raising the bar from our initial design specification.
[/p][p]Vulkan and Multithreading Improvements. Vulkan API work is very much in late stage development and will  permit us to take advantage of technologies such as frame generation and later versions of DLSS and FSR. Moving to the Vulkan API will also allow DCS to operate on more than just Windows PCs.[/p][p][/p][p]While we’re actively developing the Vulkan backend, we’re also expanding ray tracing support. By 2026, we plan to first roll out ray tracing in cockpits and then gradually extend it across all of DCS. Completing the transition to Vulkan not only unlocks modern rendering technologies but it also gives us the flexibility to implement aggressive optimizations for terrain, 3D models, and visual effects.
[/p][p]Additionally, we’re investing in manual VRAM management and granular resource streaming. This ensures that DCS stays within strict memory limits without relying on OS-enforced GPU resource evictions. As a result, we will have fewer stutters and lag spikes (even in large-scale missions or on systems with limited VRAM) alongside dynamic visual quality adjustments tailored to your hardware.[/p][p][/p][p]All in all, 2026 is shaping up to be an exciting year for cutting-edge graphics features and major performance upgrades.
[/p][p]Regarding multi-threading, this effort is now complete for the graphics side, but there are more simulation side tasks to complete. However, some of these specific engineers are currently also assisting with improved logistics, AI, improved ground unit behaviour, and other tasks. They will return to the simulation side of multi-threading once some of these more pressing matters based on community feedback are addressed.
[/p][p]Improved Weather. This important aspect of DCS still requires work specifically to towering clouds, more realistic turbulence, and weather fx. Due to substantial changes in how we render graphics, we could not advance these features in 2025. However, once staff is available to return to these tasks, we will update you on all progress made.
[/p][p]Improved Explosions and Visual Effects. We are currently working on substantially improving the variety and realism of all our types of explosions including airburst effects, napalm, fragmentation effects and damage types. We will be rolling out new fx on an ongoing basis throughout 2026 and beyond.
[/p][p]New Terrain Navmesh. New navmesh technology that was developed for the Dynamic Campaign will provide AI improved ground unit pathfinding, even in dense object populated areas. This will allow us to address long standing issues of pathfinding in urban areas. This new navmesh can be generated dynamically and work within the DCS engine to build a mesh for the chosen area, or for whole map, depending on performance considerations. It is currently in the final testing phase.
[/p][p]New Air Traffic Control and Other Radio Communications. A highly requested feature has been a much more realistic, easy-to-use, and more realistic sounding radio system. Aside from the recent Petrovich and George interfaces, much of the DCS radio environment has relied on outdated nested windows, simplified radio dialogs and options, and human-recorded voice over lines that can be difficult to amend. We have developed a new design of the radio interface for all radio participants. This includes ATC, AWACS, Tanker, JTAC, Flight, etc. that are loosely based on the George interface. We are also testing and evaluating new AI voice-over options that will allow us to rapidly amend voice dialogs. We are working closely with subject matter experts to create an authentic radio environment specifically for the combat environment with a deep focus on pure military dialog which is substantially more economical than in the civilian ATC world.
[/p][p]DCS Voice Chat will also see further improvements including the ability to add radio stations to any AI bot or map object and communicate with them using Voice Chat and adding a lightweight radio client that will allow direct connection to DCS servers.
[/p][p]Mission State Save. Mission State Save was introduced in 2025, and we are continuing its improvement. While making an exhaustive save of the entire mission state is a monumental task given the complexity of our simulation engine, we opted to address the most popular demand and save the most relevant aspects of the mission data. This includes ground unit and aircraft positions, their operational status and waypoint coordinates, etc. We have already delivered most of the community-requested API functions. Next on our list is to add Advanced Waypoint parameters to the saved data and we expect to finish this work soon. With this update, Mission State Save will store all waypoint parameters that can be set in the Mission Editor or via the scripting API, resulting in AI units retaining their waypoint rules and restrictions in the saved mission.
[/p][p]Stay tuned for next week as we delve into the second part of our roadmap newsletter.[/p][p][/p]

The update includes fixes from AI to the Mission Editor. Several player-reported aircraft AI behavior issues, reported after the last update, have been fixed. Regarding weapons, the AGM-12 received corrections, and airburst weapon effects were restored for the Bofors 40mm, ZSU-23-4 “Shilka,” and other small-calibre AAA. There are also corrections to scripting events, cargo operations, and the Fulcrum DTC.[/p][p]DCS: MiG-29A Fulcrum by Eagle Dynamics
This update expands visual variety and delivers improvements to sensors and avionics. The external model receives new historical liveries, enhanced wing bending and twisting, and refinements to the centerline tank. Radar and IRST systems have been improved with added control options, more stable Dynamic Launch Zone (DLZ) behavior during maneuvering, corrected lock and scan-zone logic, and new input bindings. Navigation and radio issues have also been resolved, improving alignment indications, glide slope accuracy, and overall mission and navigation system stability.[/p][p]DCS: F-16C Viper by Eagle Dynamics
The Viper receives several important Advanced Targeting Pod (ATP) and designation quality-of-life improvements. The ATP in air-to-air mode no longer stops following the radar track when you transition through a master mode where the pod is in air-to-ground, ensuring smoother sensor handoffs. DTOS bombing mode post-designate behaviour has been corrected, and DTOS now properly resets to its pre-designate state with a single TMS Aft input instead of requiring a second press.[/p][p]DCS: A-10C II Tank Killer by Eagle Dynamics
A high quality first-person pilot model has been added to the DCS: A-10C II Tank Killer. This very detailed pilot model includes an improved ejection sequence and offers outstanding usuals and immersion. [/p][p]DCS: AH-64D by Eagle Dynamics
This update fixes an issue with the TSD FARP icon, improving the accuracy and clarity of map symbology during planning and operations around forward arming and refuelling points.[/p][p]DCS: Mi-24P Hind by Eagle Dynamics
The Hind receives a small but noticeable polish pass on voice feedback. An incorrect Petrovich line where he mistakenly reports turning off weapons has been removed, tightening up the crew interaction and reducing confusion in combat.[/p][p]DCS: Marianas WWII Map by Eagle Dynamics
As featured last week, this update delivers a visual and layout overhaul of the Marianas WWII Map. Pagan Island and its airfield have been fully redesigned, with runway clearances, lengths, parking, and taxi routes updated to more accurately reflect the pre-eruption landscape. Length added to the runways of Ushi and Charon Kanoa airfields. Terrain fidelity has been improved through updated textures, corrected elevation and surface issues, and refined coastlines, rivers, cliffs, and road networks, alongside added ambient detail such as birds (especially around Bird Island) and boats. The update also revises map boundaries, adds mission generator support, expands damage states with new destroyed building models, and renames the city of Haditna to Akashi.[/p][p]DCS: C-130J by Airplane Simulation Company
This update delivers broad performance, flight-control, and systems improvements alongside extensive fixes and usability enhancements. Ray tracing and overall performance have been optimized, autopilot behavior has been refined across navigation and approach modes. The low-speed handling model has also been improved. Numerous avionics, navigation, multicrew, cargo, and stability issues have been resolved, addressing crashes, incorrect indications, control logic, and visual artifacts. The update also expands controls and keybind options, enhances the EFB with new checklist, cargo, and manual features, updates visuals and UI elements, and includes general quality-of-life improvements throughout the aircraft.[/p][p]DCS: JF-17 Thunder by Deka Ironwork Simulations
The Thunder’s radar behaviour against jamming targets is improved. Jamming contacts now appear correctly on the radar display even when they are beyond the current range setting, and the radar TDC can once again bug jamming targets as intended.[/p][p]DCS: F-4E Phantom II by Heatblur Simulations
This update introduces core technology, systems, and usability improvements. Heatblur’s HBUI has been integrated, with collaboration from ED, into the DCS core as the new Webview-API, enabling modern, web-based in-game interfaces for all modules without a bundled CEF (Chromium Embedded Framework). Aircraft reliability has been refined with more realistic random failure behavior, higher pneudraulic actuator MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure), and expanded electrical failure modelling. Jester AI receives quality-of-life updates, avionics and weapons issues have been corrected, external model visibility improved, and new Iraq Instant Action missions have been added.[/p][p]DCS: F-14 Tomcat by Heatblur Simulations
This update introduces a new Jester collision steering toggle keybind, giving you more control over how he manages steering cues. New inputs have been added for the RIO ECM display mode between NAV and ECM, and several RIO keybind names such as collision steering and track hold have been clarified. As with the Phantom, new Iraq instant action missions have been added for immediate action in the new theatre.[/p][p]AI-Only A-6E Intruder by Heatblur Simulations
Heatblur Simulations is proud to offer an AI-only A-6E for the DCS core. The A-6E AI offers a combination of all A-6E variants spanning the time between the 1970s through the 1990s, offering all weapons for historical loadouts such as those used by the A-6E Target Recognition and Attack Multi-Sensor (TRAM) and A-6E Systems/Weapons Improvement Program (SWIP) variants. It offers buddy-pod refueling for all drogue-system-capable aircraft in DCS, full supercarrier capability, and much more.

While the AI-only release is currently available, much of the groundwork has been laid for the upcoming full-fidelity A-6 module. Work on the flyable module started last year with a full team, and we will share more information as it develops! We hope you enjoy this free asset for all in DCS and cannot wait to see you escort it going downtown in whatever historical scenarios and missions you create for it. Watch the release video. Enjoy![/p][p]DCS: AJS37 Viggen by Heatblur Simulations
This update focuses on system stability, avionics accuracy, and procedural correctness. Autopilot engagement logic has been further refined, electrical and hydraulic behaviors “corrected under non-standard operating conditions, and engine relight logic improved during flow reversal. Navigation and landing indications now display correctly across instruments, with several warning logic issues being resolved. The update also adds new Iraq Instant Action missions and includes an updated manual.[/p][p]New Ground units
In this season of giving, we are pleased to provide you with several new ground units that are designed to expand your Cold War missions. First, command the BRDM-2 reconnaissance vehicle that entered service in 1962, and it is still operated today. For an added punch, we also have the BRDM-2 with 9M14 Malyutka Anti-tank Guided Missiles! Get your troops to the front lines in wheeled BTR-60 and BTR-70 armored personnel carriers that are capable of river crossings. If you need some added firepower, the venerable T-34-85 and T-80B tanks; the T-34-85 was introduced in 1944 and the T-80B entered service in the late seventies. To help protect the skies above these units, we have added a new Strela-1 infrared-guided SAM system that is built on the amphibious BRDM-2 chassis. We have also added the P-14 ‘Tall King A’ early warning radar to support S-200 (SA-5) long-range surface-to-air missile batteries. With the exception of the P-14, all of these new units are player-drivable using DCS: Combined Arms, which is currently 50% off during the Winter Sale 2025.

We hope you enjoy these free holiday additions, and we look forward to the engaging missions you create with them. Please make sure you have installed the latest update to take full advantage of these new models.[/p][p] [/p]
Merry Christmas

Happy holidays
[p][/p][p]This year has been full of new modules such as the DCS: MiG-29A Fulcrum, DCS: C-130J, DCS: F4U-1D, map expansions, system overhauls, and countless fixes and improvements.
Tornado

Development Progress
“As the year is coming to a close and most of you are likely waiting for news about the Tornado development, we at AviaStorm are proud to announce that the DCS: Tornado module will be powered by Heatblur Simulations’ proprietary ANVIL Technology. This includes the component based simulation framework that powers Heatblur’s F-4E Phantom II and their upcoming modules for DCS, as well as the JESTER 2.0 WSO-AI.

Heatblur‘s long years of outstanding experience in developing modules for DCS and their track record for innovation within the flight sim world - made this partnership a perfect match for our development team and project. Not only will it allow us to provide a module of the highest quality and standards that we think you all deserve, but it will also enable those of you, who have flown the F-4E, to step into the DCS: Tornado and be greeted with familiar elements that you have come to know and love while still keeping the project in AviaStorm's hands.

Crucially, the support from Heatblur and the use of their ANVIL technology will also allow us to significantly advance the development schedule for the Tornado, as we of course wish nothing more than to have you all experience it as soon as possible. We are thrilled that we are finally able to share this incredible news with you. We look forward to keeping you all updated as we forge ahead on this exciting partnership with one of the premier developers in DCS.” AviaStorm

Thank you again for your passion and support.

Yours sincerely,
Promotion
This is a promotional message from Pimax: The Crystal Super micro-OLED takes the original Crystal Super design and upgrades it with dual 4K Sony micro-OLED panels paired with Pimax’s ConcaveView pancake optics.

For a limited time, a purchase of the new Crystal Super Micro-OLED comes with an additional credit of 40,000 ED Miles (worth USD$40 in the DCS e-shop) when you use code DCS40K at checkout.

About the micro-OLED Crystal Super
Each of the 27 million pixels (3840 x 3552 per eye) can be turned off and on individually, meaning ultra crisp visuals, fine contrasts, and zero pixelated edges around objects. If you fly in a night scene, micro-OLED panels have no panel backlight bleeding, meaning black pixels stay truly black with no unwanted glow.

The three-layer ConcaveView lenses deliver the widest field of view of any micro-OLED VR headset, with 116° of horizontal FOV, and offer edge-to-edge clarity. And with eye-tracking, users can use QuadViews Dynamic Foveated Rendering in DCS without any third-party software, getting FPS boosts of up to 50%!

The integrated audio and ergonomic backstrap make the headset comfortable and ideal for long sessions in DCS. With a cabled connection to your PC, there’s visually lossless compression over DisplayPort 1.4a, and thanks to four SLAM tracking cameras, no base stations are required.

To receive 40,000 ED Miles with your purchase of the new Crystal Super micro-OLED, follow this link and use code DCS40K during checkout. Visit the Pimax area of the DCS Forum for dedicated Pimax VR support and suggestions for the best settings.

Thank you again for your passion and support.
