Community Stories: Driving Innovation in Fatigue Monitoring

It always amazes us how creative and innovative our community can be. Recently, we learnt about Mr. Martinka, a researcher at the Technical University of Liberec in Czechia, Faculty of Textiles, who has been using Euro Truck Simulator 2 as a key tool in his amazing work on driver fatigue monitoring. By integrating smart t-shirts with sensors to track vital signs, he's using our game to simulate real-world driving conditions and develop cutting-edge safety technology. We're incredibly proud that ETS2 plays a role in advancing research that could make roads safer for everyone, so we decided to find out more from him and present his work to the rest of the community. Let's dive in!

Because testing such technology would be nearly impossible and dangerous in a real vehicle, they needed to find a good substitute. "ETS2 was the simplest and the most practical solution because it mirrors real driving conditions. The game allowed us to simulate fatigue safely. We needed a reliable platform to simulate long hours of driving, and the game provided exactly that," Martinka says, explaining why they chose our game to test their technology.

The testing process took about six months while they were constantly improving the technology. Martinka and his team constructed a simulator using a real car seat and steering wheel in a classroom setting. They mimicked real-life driving schedules, sometimes driving from six in the morning until 2 or 3 pm, logging a maximum of seven hours behind the wheel at a time. "We drove continuously, replicating fatigue-inducing conditions until we were genuinely exhausted and wanted to sleep," he said.

Using this setup, the team monitored breathing patterns to pinpoint when a driver enters microsleep - a dangerous state that can lead to accidents. "While modern cars often feature fatigue sensors, they are not always accurate. Our smart T-Shirt, on the other hand, provides a more reliable solution. The sensors in the T-Shirt are nearly invisible, washable, and far more precise in detecting fatigue than standard car systems," Mr. Martinka shared with us.

This innovative research has already garnered international attention. Martinka and his team have been collaborating with other universities in the Czech Republic and Japan. "This year, we'll spend an entire month at a Japanese university testing the T-Shirt with simulators using ETS2 again," he shared.

Their work is not done yet. Mr. Martinka and his team continue to upgrade the T-Shirt's design based on ongoing tests, as they want to make roads safer for drivers everywhere. We are really proud that our game is used for such a noble cause. Don't forget to follow us on our X/TwitterFacebookInstagramBluesky, and YouTube, so you won't miss out on upcoming news! Cruising Greece Event Conclusion & Greek Mythology Pack Release

Yesterday, we ended the #CruisingGreece World of Trucks event for Euro Truck Simulator 2. To celebrate the conclusion of this successful event, we're excited to announce the release of the Greek Mythology Pack! So in this blog, let's wrap up and recap the latest WoTr event as well as present the beautiful Greece-themed paint jobs pack for ETS2.

The #CruisingGreece event began on December 4th with the release of our latest ETS2 map expansion. Although our #BestCommunityEver had almost two months to complete it, they managed to reach the community goal in just twelve days! The collective target was to drive 200 million kilometres while delivering cargo to or from any city in Greece. This is simply astonishing. You accomplished this sooner than any of us believed!

In total, you have driven 387,426,427 kilometres! More than 93 thousand players took part in the event and over 48,000 finished all 15 jobs and accomplished their individual goals. Although it wasn't a deciding factor for the community goal, we wanted to share this statistic too - you've completed 827,116 deliveries while participating in this event!

We would like to thank everyone who participated in this event and the team behind its production. We hope you are enjoying the beautiful rewards they prepared for you!

The Greek Mythology Pack was initially supposed to be released along with the map expansion. However, due to some unfortunate technical issues with the previous paint jobs, we needed to retouch and rework them a little. Now that the work is done, the end of the Cruising Greece event seems like a great opportunity to release it.

Nordic Horizons: Oulu

Hyvää päivää! As one of the northernmost countries in the world, Finland is best known for its breathtaking natural beauty, vast forests, & rich cultural heritage. In today’s blog, we’ll take a closer look at the city of Oulu, a destination you can explore and deliver to in our upcoming Nordic Horizons DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2.

As one of the oldest cities in northern Finland and the fifth-largest by population, Oulu offers a unique mix of architectural landmarks and economic significance, making it a key destination for truckers. Our team has recreated several large industrial zones around the city, including a food industry producer and a chemical factory. That isn't all however, as you'll be sure to discover so much more when you visit the city yourself!

Players will also have the opportunity to deliver to and from the Port of Oulu, where sea, land, and rail transport converge. As the largest general multipurpose port in the Bothnian Bay, it handles an average of 3 million tons of cargo per year, pretty impressive!

This city also offers a wonderful example of minimalist Nordic architecture, seamlessly integrated with its natural surroundings. As you travel through Oulu, you will come across various standout landmarks, including the central bridge spanning the Oulujoki River, the railway station, as well as other notable buildings and architectural structures. You will also come across some lovely views of the small surrounding islands and bays located in the west of the city.

You will also be able to travel on a variety of road networks, including major road junctions, wide city avenues, and cosy narrow streets, each built with its own character and charm. Our team has particularly focused on capturing Oulu's clean and simple Scandinavian style, blending it with the surrounding nature and landscape.

We hope you enjoyed this preview of Oulu, and we look forward to highlighting more cities featured in the Nordic Horizon DLC in the near future. If you like what you see, consider adding this upcoming expansion to your Steam Wishlist! It really helps support our releases. Until next time, keep on truckin'.

Return to Winterland Conclusion

The magical Christmas season is long gone and so is our Return to Winterland World of Trucks event. For the past couple of weeks, our community has been hauling cargo like crazy to complete their individual and community goals for this event. We are very proud to say that you have managed to achieve the community goal with plenty of time to spare! Now let's take a look at some stats.

But first, a huge thank you to everyone who participated in this year's Christmas event! Even if you didn't finish all your deliveries, it's been so great seeing so many of you dive in, share screenshots and videos, and just have fun as soon as the event kicked off. And you always amaze us with how quickly you smash the community goal - it's seriously unbelievable!

In total, you have completed over 2.5 million Christmas deliveries! 270,000 players contributed in the Return to Winterland event and over 114,000 finished all 15 jobs and accomplished their individual goals. While this stat wasn't a deciding factor, we're sharing it purely for fun - you've driven an impressive 251,294,135 kilometers while hauling Christmas cargo!

We would also like to thank the amazing team behind the Return to Winterland event - you set the bar really high with the Christmas Winterland event in 2023 and managed to raise it even higher this time as Winterland's weather changed noticeably. Truckers experienced longer and sunnier days than before, but also faced snowfall! As part of the adventure, drivers were challenged to help rescue gift packs that had been lost during a previous snowstorm. We cannot wait to see what you come up with for the upcoming Christmas season.

And let's not forget about the cute Christmas-themed rewards! We really hope you like them and that they fill your truck cabin with the holiday spirit.

Your excitement has not only made this event a big success but also fueled our passion to deliver more in the future. We really appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to more adventurous events together!
