Endless Mode Postponed

Hello Miners,

Let’s not dance around it. We promised Update 05 in Q1, and we’re not going to hit that. Endless Mode and the big performance rewrite are postponed.

Back in December, we set our sights on Endless Mode. It’s been your top request since launch, and we were excited to make it happen. But to pull it off, we had to rebuild the game’s guts using a new technical foundation called an Entity Component System, or ECS. This kind of rewrite changes how the game handles everything behind the scenes. It’s what would have made longer runs and better performance possible, especially on Steam Deck.

We dug in deep. We made solid progress. But eventually, ECS started dragging us down. It locked up our programmers, slowed the rest of the team, and put our plans for 1.0 at risk. We had to choose between pushing forward or getting stuck. So we made the call. We’re setting ECS aside and getting back to building.

Endless Mode isn’t gone forever. Just not first in line anymore.

What’s coming next?
Patch 4.2 is about 2 weeks out. It includes:
  • New Overclocks
  • Buffs and reworks for some of the weaker Overclocks and weapons
  • End stage Elites drop loot crates based on your time to kill
  • A new anomaly where mining is everything
  • Fixes for major issues, including save file corruption and the Haz 5 achievement not unlocking
  • Lots of balance changes and weapons tweaks

After that, we go all-in on 1.0.

We’re not ready to share the details yet, but we’ll share more soon, including the 1.0 release date. And when we do, you’ll see why we made this trade.

We know we’ve been too quiet. That’s on us. You’ll be hearing more from us going forward.

If you’ve got questions, hit us up. Discord (#what-happened-to-update-5), Steam comments, wherever you like to shout. We’re listening.

Thanks for sticking with us. We’re not done digging yet, and 1.0 is going to be a proper rockbuster.

Hello Miners,

Aaahhh February 14th. It’s that special time of year again where we celebrate our love… for Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor! Can you believe it’s been a year since we launched the game? It’s been a hell of a ride, and we want to thank you for all the good times and for your patience with us. Thanks so much for sticking with us - we truly can’t wait to share what’s next for DRG:S.

Oh, you want a Valentine's gift? All right then, here you go, a sneak peek at Update 5. It’s a little something special we’ve been working on to incentivize productivity.

Roadmap Update - December 2024

Hello Survivors,

Tis’ the season to update our roadmap and share some of our plans for Update 05. Last time we updated our roadmap, we mentioned how we are spending a bit longer on updates to make every update feel substantial while also future-proofing the game’s foundation with new tech. In Update 05 we are reaping some of the benefits of this strategy.

In Update 05 we plan on adding one of the most requested features to Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor - Endless Mode! We have wanted to do it for a long while, and if you go back to previous roadmap revisions you will see it in the “Later™” section ever since we released the game in Early Access. The reason we haven’t done it already is because an Endless Mode is a resource hog. As runs become longer, your power level increases, mob density increases, SFX clutter increases, etc. In parallel with the development of new game features, we have spent the last few months rewriting the game with a new entity component system that greatly optimizes the game. It’s an optimization so substantial that we’re putting it on the roadmap as its own headline. It has allowed us to make Endless Mode without sacrificing performance, but it will also have other far-reaching effects. The game will run much smoother on lower-end PCs, it will run smoother on Steam Deck, and it opens the possibility for porting.

The third bullet point on the roadmap is about Overclocks. In Update 05 we plan on filling in the remaining “missing” Overclocks, meaning every weapon will have at least three Balanced Overclocks and two Unstable Overclocks. We also plan on revamping some of the underwhelming Overclock choices. As always, we will start revealing more details in the weeks leading to the update which is on track for a release in Q1.

Rock and Stone!
